BROWNSEA ISLAND SCOUT & GUIDE HERITAGE TRUST Charity No. 1146810

ANNUAL REPORT 2024 / 2025

Introduction

The Trustees' Annual Report for the year 2024/25 is presented in two parts. Part 1 deals with those aspects required by the Charity Commission on governance etc. and Part 2 summarises the tasks undertaken by members of the Committee and the supporting groups during the year to meet the objectives.

Part 1

The registered title of the Trust is the Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Trust, No. 1146810 and can be contacted c/o The Outdoor Centre, Brownsea Island, Poole, Dorset BH13 7EE.

Governance

The governing document is the Declaration of Trust known as the Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Trust dated 5 April 2012.

Structure

The business of the Trust is carried out by an unincorporated management committee known as the Brownsea Island Scout & Guide Heritage Committee, the members of which are listed within this document.

way communication between the National Trust and Scouting & Guiding.

Public Benefit

The Brownsea Island Outdoor Centre offers camping and hostel facilities together with a range of self-led activities not only to members of the Scouting and Guiding movements, but also to members of the general public, managed by National Trust Holidays. Safety is taken very seriously and the benefits far outweigh any risks. Personal benefits are incidental, other than to participants.

Financial Review

The Trustees have agreed to review the way the accounts are prepared for the charity. During this review, the Trustees will look at the continued need for keeping the B.I. Trading Post Company. It may be possible to use a Receipts and Payments approach in future years. This would provide a simpler way to appreciate the movement of funds.

Purposes

Management

The management arrangements with the National Trust are through a written, but noncontractual, agreement known as the "Memorandum of Understanding" and by a lease on part of the building known as the

Baden-Powell Outdoor Centre. An Advisory Group provides an important channel for two-

The Trustees have reviewed the need to continue to set aside funds for the Outdoor Centre lease which is due for renewal in 2032. It was accepted that as we have more than sufficient funds in the investment account to cover any lease renewal and thus, we no longer need to consider amortisation of the lease. It was agreed that we will use any excess funds for the purchase of appropriate campsite assets as it becomes necessary. The Trustees will review the Fixed Assets held and will make any adjustments during this current financial year.

We have acquired a second card machine which is being used in the NT reception to allow non-cash purchases of the Trading Post items held in reception.

The volunteers who serve in the Trading Post are greatly appreciated and our thanks go to the many hours of devoted effort to making the shop a wonderful success. It is encouraging to see how many volunteers contribute to

improving the day to day running of the Trading Post.

The charity’s income this period remains in a satisfactory position.

The opening current account funds were £ 42,630.06

and at the year end this increased to £ 83,834.28

The donation received from the Trading Post operations was £ 32,899.00.

The investment account interest provided income of £ 15,027.99 The charity operating costs were £ 7,964.12

Thanks go to Jan Crouch for the invaluable guidance and support in undertaking the independent examination of both the Trading Post and Charity accounts this year.

Eddy Foster - Treasurer

Register of interests

All the Trustees and Co-opted Committee members are members of either The Scout Association or Girlguiding.

Part 2

The Baden-Powell Outdoor Centre

The Outdoor Centre comprises the original 1907 Camp Site, South Shore Lodge and the purpose-built Baden-Powell Buildings which include washing and toilet facilities and houses the Heritage Centre and the Trading post.

Committee Membership

The Committee has met on three separate occasions during the year with a high record of attendance. At these meetings the National Trust staff were also able to update members on the operation and requirements of the Centre, enabling the Committee to assess its annual contribution towards the costs of the Outdoor Centre.

The Advisory Group

The National Trust staff and members of the Committee in their representative roles work closely together on the Advisory Group to ensure that standards are maintained. The successful operation of this group reflects the strength of the relationships with the National Trust and with each other.

Heritage Centre

The exhibition of Scouting and Guiding memorabilia in the Baden-Powell Centre continues to be of interest to all. Our special display this year focused on our sixty years celebration The display of scarves and badges records the memories of our many Scouting and Guiding visitors both from home and overseas.

B.I. Trading Post

I am pleased that we took over £68,000 in 2024 season . The trading profit was £34,384 an increase of £14,000 from the previous year. I am pleased that the new clothing is selling well and neckers, woggles, badges, squirrels and all the rest are still selling well. When we buy large amounts, it means that the unit cost of items is less than it would be if we bought small amounts regularly. Many thanks to all the volunteers who have volunteered all year and welcomed so many people to Brownsea. Thanks also to Jo Satchell for continuing the online sales as well.

It has been useful to have the CAF card and the online account as this has enabled me to pay online or BACS for most of the items.

The new badge with the daffodil design looks great and the daffodils on Brownsea have been good this year. The necker badge sold so well last year that I replaced the stock before the autumn. We are going to have a new challenge badge in the next few weeks so children can choose from 4 challenge sheets representing a Rainbow, Brownie, Squirrel , Beaver interest badge and have one of our challenge badges and then sort out with their leader an interest badge !

We will run another competition for young people to design badges this summer as have finally run out of the brilliant designs we had from 4 years ago.

The new card machine works well and we have just bought a second one so that NT reception can use it. The buggy is fine and should be charged at the Outdoor Centre during the day or at quay end overnight. There is no requirement for retraining for driving this just

4

familiarisation with the controls. Members of public can be taken on the buggy in any emergency or NT staff may borrow it again in any situation and can be used to carry NT volunteers or staff if space is needed.

We thanked Maureen last year for all the many years that she had done the rota .We thank Martin Terry for taking on the task. With the new volunteers from last year, we can fill more gaps. We do need to recruit more volunteers and make it more straightforward for them. We agreed that those who are on Girlguiding GO, or happy to be put on GO, can complete the safeguarding on GO while others can complete the Scout safeguarding, for which you don’t need to have a membership number. Please let Kevin or Angela know you have completed the safeguarding unit.

We thank Eddy Foster who has taken over from Doug Bennett as treasurer for Trading Post and BISGHT for all his hard work in doing the accounts .

Val Marsden has been co-opted onto the BISGHT committee as a representative of volunteers as she knows most of the volunteers in both FOGBI and BISASU.

SCENES Centre

One of the highlights of 2024 is that jointly with the National Trust we finally received our SCENES re accreditation in May. My thanks in particular to Georgia Simpkin for her work in completing the many documents required for our submission. Thanks also to Juan Maiolino from Kandersteg International Scout Centre for carrying out the peer review and to the support of the National Trust Countryside Team and Dorset Wildlife Trust during the review.

The work of the whole team was acknowledged by the World Scout Bureau in their email which reads: -

It is with great pleasure that we extend our warmest congratulations to you and your team on the successful re-accreditation of Brownsea Island as SCENES. Your efforts and hard work in meeting the requirements for reaccreditation are truly commendable.

Your team's collective efforts and commitment to excellence in all aspects of your operations have undoubtedly contributed to this success. Your ability to collaborate and work as a team, combined with your attention to detail and focus on continuous improvement, have made this achievement possible.”

Let us hope that we continue to have a good summer in the Trading Post and many thanks to everyone for all their hard work. Thank you also to the NT staff and volunteers at the OAC and Reception for all their support too.

Highlights from the Trading Post show:

Stock sold - £ 68,260 Card machine sales - £ 38,000 Cash sales - £ 27,500 Bank transfer and PayPal sales - £ 2,800 Stock purchased - £ 38,500 Quantity of items:

Friends of Guiding - FOGBI

We are pleased to report that FOGBI continues to support BISGHT and the National Trust. This year many of our members continue to help at the Trading Post including some new members which we welcome. The members who volunteer at the Trading Post have enjoyed meeting Scouting and Guiding members from the UK and around the World also the general public and promoting the campsite including what’s available on Brownsea Island.

We had a successful AGM at Dudsbury after the Quay Hotel in Poole went into liquidation a week before our meeting, it was good to meet up with old and new friends. We had a very enjoyable picnic on the Island in June on Church Field inviting NT Brownsea Island Manger Paddy Stenning to join us. Many of the members took themselves off for a walk and visited the Outdoor Centre and South Shore Lodge. We also had an enjoyable fun social

5

evening with a Fun Fair Games and supper. We have again offered small grants for Dorset Guiding units from Rangers to Rainbows to come and enjoy Brownsea and they participated in activities enjoying the magic of Brownsea.

We look forward to working with BISGHT and the National Trust in 2026.

Chris Gabb - Chairman FOGBI

Our thanks go to Chris Gabb who has served on the BISGHT Trustees since 2019 and is now handing over to Sheila Leete as a Trustee of BISGHT. We look forward to working with Shiela and FOGBI.

Scout Active Support – BISASU

Membership numbers have fallen over the last two years and we are no longer holding bimonthly meetings in West Moors. The New Year Luncheon was however well attended and a core group of members continue to work on the Island either in the Trading Post or working alongside the NT Volunteers.

The Service Team - BIST hove decided that the time has come to disband. Many have worked on the island since the 1960’s and age, health and fitness are beginning to take their toll. We take this opportunity to thank them all for the many hours and weekends spent on the island working on the campsite and in and around South Shore Lodge. THANKS GUYS.

National Trust - Outdoor Holidays

Outdoor Holidays 2024

We had a very busy and successful camping season for 2024 and we welcomed a range of Scouting and Guiding groups from across the country and further afield, including groups from Portugal, Norway, France and Germany. Our Bell Tents, tree tents and tent pitches for the public continue to be very popular and with many lovely reviews.

To keep things interesting, we opened St Marks bothy at the end of July, right in time for summer holidays. Our staff and volunteer teams pulled out all the stops to make sure it was ready in time and the result has been met

with lots of great feedback from those who have stayed there. The bookings have been back-to-back which is so encouraging to see and really proves the business case for bringing this building back into use.

Our first guests included Liz Edwards, from The Times, who previously wrote a great article for us on the campsite. She returned and stayed in St Marks bothy as the first guest and wrote a great piece highlighting the island and the bothy:

We have had some scouting and guiding groups utilising it as an accommodation option alongside South Shore Lodge, as if you book both you can have 16 in SSL and 5 in St Marks, so it is a great option for groups looking for indoor accommodation.

The Watersports academy was on island again offering paddleboarding and kayaking hire and group sessions, which has been particularly popular with groups wanting to get out on the water during their stay.

2025 looking ahead.

Brownsea Island campsite reopened on 28[th] March.

As we are entered into another camping season, we would like to share some our plans and outlook for the 2025 camping season ahead of us.

As you may know, St Marks bothy was brought back into use in the summer of 2024 and provides basic accommodation in a stunning location for up to 5 people. There is a log burning stove, electricity and a shower and toilet room which means it can be used all year round and bring in income for the island during the off- season. We have been very busy with bookings across winter and into this year which has been great and the feedback from our guests has been very positive.

We have welcomed back campers to the island from the end of March and continue with the same offer as the previous year, with our group camping pitches, tent pitches, tree tents and bell tents. The Water sports Academy will be based on island over summer for group sessions of paddle boarding and kayaking and there are lots of different events planned such as bushcraft, wildlife walks, theatre groups and more which the campers will be able to take advantage of. Events at Brownsea Island

6

BROWNSEA ISLAND SCOUT & GUIDE HERITAGE TRUST Charity No. 1146810

We already have 55 groups booked to come and camp with us across our 2025 season and the enquiries and bookings are continuing to come in which means we should be well booked up on our group site for the year.

We have built a new bin compound area for campers which is a much more efficient and organised way of collecting rubbish from our campers.

We are also introducing a new variation to our campsite role called “reception & shop welcome” which includes looking after our shop and being present at the campsite reception during the middle part of the day. Usually, between 10:00 and 14:30, we close our reception and shop area so the team can complete changeovers and cleaning and maintenance tasks. We would like to introduce a new role which will allow us to keep the shop and reception area open during this time. We will train volunteers on how to use the till, look after the shop, and answer any customer questions during this time of the day, and the team will be only a quick radio away if you needed support. If you are interested in this role, please let us know and we would be happy to discuss this further with you. We will mainly be looking at weekends and school holiday cover for this role to begin with.

We will have a year of adjustment to navigate due to the changes in the ferries to bring staff and volunteers to the island but nothing we are not all well equipped to work with, and we are confident that with a great team behind us we will have a fantastic year and many more happy campers.

Georgia Simpkin, Outdoor Holidays Manager — Dorset and Wiltshire

completing last year’s accounts and for making the necessary changes to our Banking accounts, Charity Commission and Companies House registrations.

At the end of the year Maureen Hill handed over the preparation of the Trading Post Rota to Martin Terry. I have known Maureen for the last forty years as a founder member of the Brownsea Island Scout Fellowship. Maureen took over responsibility for the Rota some 16 years ago, which she continued to carry out despite moving away to South Devon. Thank you Maureen and we shall miss your weekly emails throughout the season.

We were pleased that Martin Terry volunteered to take over the Trading post Rota, in what has been almost a seamless handover from Maureen.

I cannot close my report without acknowledging the work of Angela Salter our Secretary and Trading Post Manager. Not only has she kept the Management Committee up to date and informed on all of our administrative matters, she has also worked closely with Eddy Foster to simplify the way that we pay our suppliers promptly. By keeping her finger on the pulse of stock levels in the Trading Post she ensures that a wide selection of badges and souvenirs is always available to our visitors.

In summing up, suffice to say a very big thank you from the Heritage Trust to all our Trading Post Volunteers, as well as to the National Trust staff and volunteers on the campsite. My thanks also to the Brownsea Island Service Team for their work in helping to prepare the campsite for the 2024 season and for their additional work on the preparation of St. Marks Cottage as our new Bothy.

Chairman's Review

2024 was again a busy year, with 56 Scouting and Guiding groups on the campsite including a number of international groups. Day visitor numbers continue to increase year on year, which is reflected in the increased sales in the Trading Post.

Finally, a big thank you from me to all the Heritage Trust Trustees and committee members. for their diligence and wise council, and indeed a BIG THANK YOU to you all.

Kevin Phillips – Chairman BISGHT

It has been very much a year of change within the Heritage Trust. We welcomed Eddy Foster as our new Treasurer at the start of the year. Eddy has worked hard over the year to both document and to simplify our accounting procedures. I thank Eddy for his diligence in
