OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES

Purposes and aims

TheSociety'spurposeistoactasamultidisciplinaryprofessionalbodyofexpertstopromotethe clinical
practice,educationandclinicaltrialsinrelationtomuscledisease,myastheniagravisandspinal muscular
atrophy. It is intended to be a forum of consultant level experts to consider these issues.
The aims of the Society are:
- agreeing best practice and standards of care for patients with muscle disease
- agreeing standards for training in clinical myology and clinical muscle pathology
- promoting translational research
- establishing clinical networks to facilitate and promote clinical trials and patient registries
- facilitating collaborations with patient organisations

ACHIEVEMENT AND PERFORMANCE

Charitable activities

-The BMS Annual Meeting was held as a shortened programme online on the 4th Nov 2020.
-The event was held onlinedue to the SARS-CoV-2virus pandemic.This meetingincludeda shortened AGM
(online).
-TheBMSfundedfreemeetingplacesforallattendees,andthisyearextendedattendanceto non-BMS
members. -The online event was well received with excellent attendeeship and feedback.
-The key sessions for this meeting were:
-Hot topics for myology research in 2020: Brexit and Covid-19
-Treatment for NMDs
-BMS Paediatric Muscle Teaching Day was not held in 2020, due to the pandemic.

FUTURE DEVELOPMENTS

TheBMShascreatedaneweventfor2021.DesignedforAlliedHealthProfessionalswitha specialist
interest in Neuromuscular Disease, this event will fall into the next reporting period.
The BMS will run an Annual Meeting in November 2021, which will be held online.
The BMS will run a Muscle Teaching day in November 2021.

I report on the accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021, which are set out on pages four to eight.

Responsibilities and basis of report

Asthecharity'strusteesyouareresponsibleforthepreparationoftheaccountsinaccordancewith the
requirements of the Charities Act 2011 ('the Act').
I haveexaminedyourcharity'saccountsas requiredunder section145of the CharitiesAct 2011('the Act').
IncarryingoutmyexaminationIhavefollowedtheDirectionsgivenbytheCharityCommission under
section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.
My role is to state whether any material matters have come to my attention giving me cause to believe:

1. that accounting records were not kept as required by section 130 of the Act; or

2. that the accounts do not accord with those records; or

3. that the accounts do not comply with the accounting requirements of the Act; or

4. that there is further information needed for a proper understanding of the accounts.

1. ACCOUNTING POLICIES

Accounting convention

Thefinancialstatementshavebeenpreparedunderthehistoricalcostconvention,and in
accordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardforSmallerEntities(effectiveApril2008), the
CharitiesAct2011andtherequirementsoftheStatementofRecommendedPractice, Accounting
and Reporting by Charities.

Incoming resources

AllincomingresourcesareincludedontheStatementofFinancialActivitieswhenthecharity is
legally entitled to the income and the amount can be quantified with reasonable accuracy.

Resources expended

Expenditureisaccountedforonanaccrualsbasisandhasbeenclassifiedunderheadings that
aggregateallcostrelatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbedirectlyattributedto particular
headings they have been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.

Taxation

The charity is exempt from tax on its charitable activities.

Fund accounting

Unrestrictedfundscanbe usedin accordancewiththecharitableobjectivesat thediscretionof the
trustees.
Restrictedfunds can only be used for particularrestrictedpurposeswithin the objectsof the  charity.
