Structure) governance and management continued... The company is managed by a Board of Trustees composed of the directors and trustees. The Board comprises ofa majority of students elected by the network, the remainder being appointed by the Board to bring particular skillsto its business. The Board normally meets four times a yearto review progress against financial and performance targets, to approve the annual budget and accounts and to discuss and approve the overall strategy oftheorganisation. People and PlanetTrust (registered charity number 1140864-1} {'PPT') is a linked charity to the company. Unless otherwise stated, all numbers in these accounts are the combined numbers of the company and People and PlanetTrust. Rlsk managem•nt The trustees have considered the major risks to which the organisation is exposed and have reviewed those risks and the systems and procedures implemented in mitigation of those risks. The major risk is variability in funding which is mitigated by targeted increases in other sources of income, especially unrestricted fundin& and ensuringthat any new commitments do not exceed their funding. Buildingon the individual fundraisingwork for 202213, we appointed a temporary individual fundraiserwho ran a short appeal and developed our individual fundraisingsystems to create templates for future fundraisers. R•s•rves Pollcy The trustees have considered a reseryes policy for the company and have agreed that reserves should be maintained at a level equivalent to three months operating expenditure (therefore approximately £108,000 for the combined amounts of reserves of PAPSAL and PPTI. At the year- end date, the reserves gave a combined total of £158,476 which brings us back in line with our reserves policy. Publ1< b•nefft The trustees confirm that they have referred to the guidance contained in the Charity Commission's general guidance on public benefitwhen reviewingthe company's aims and objectives, and in setting the scale and scope of activities forthe year ahead.
Achievements and Performance The 2023124 financial year saw a increase in the number of in-person workshops and events, while on-line events were also offered. Grant fundraising continued to form the basis of our core income, though we also received individual donations. During the year ended 31 March 2024 the charity received grants totalling £496,179 {2023 £370,758) and donations totalling £42,02312023 £41,595).Expenditure totalled £446,534 {2023 £368,599) ofwhich £341,101 {2023 £297,103) were staffing costs, with the balance representing project costs, supportand fund-raising costs. We appointed a new Migrant Justice Co-Director {increasingthe numberofdays perweek from 2 to 5)a new full time Climate Justice Co-Director, Movement Building Manager, an additional temporary intern Ibringingthe number up to 3} and a temporary fundraising officer. All other posts remained the same. The work ofthe organisation continued to be conducted remotelyi SO operatingexpenditure continued to be lessthan in previous years. Activlti•s People & Planet is dedicated to achieving public benefit by supportingor undertakingwork that is intended to contribute towards: The eradication of global poverty, Protection ofthe environment and the promotion ofsustainable development, The upholdingand extension ofhuman rights, The advancement ofcitizenship. Duringthe reporting period, these objectives were tsken forward by our continuing campaigns focussing on the rootcauses ofclimate change. encouragingsustainable living and migrant justice. We completed the first year ofour202212026 strategic plan which we reviewed on a quarterly basis. Despite the disruption of key staff leaving and recruitment of their replacement, all the campaigns went from strength to strength.
Activities (Continued. .) December 2023 sawthe departure ofJ Clarke our Co-Director for Climate Justice since 2021 {before that Worker's Rights) who had done an incrediblejob ofdeveloping the Fossil Free Careers campaign and supporting Fossil Free. Theywere replaced by Josie Mizen. a long term climatejustice campaigner, whotook up the position in January 2024. Despitethe disruption The Climate Justice Team continued to see success through the Fossil Free Divest Campaign, which not only remains popularwith students butcan be a conduit to other People & Planet campaigns when a university divests. Atthe end ofthe financial year, 109 universities had divested from fossil fuels (72% of universities). The Post 92 programme was also successful in targettingtrainingon campuses where People & Planet has not had a presence with a particular focus on Fossil Free Divest. The Fossil Free Careers campaign continued to grow with 6 universities committingto excluding the fossil fuel and mining industry from recruitment activities and one making a partial commitment. Several more universities have shown an interest in making a commitment, with 65% of UK universities having an ethical careers policy (meeting the target for ethical careers policies early) and 17 Students, Unions backing the campaign. The campaign remains extremely popularwith students with 32 active groups atthe end ofthe financial year. The Migrant Justice Team also saw majorchanges with the departure of Eva Spiekermann, from the role of Co-Director in May after 5 years in post. She was replaced by Andre Dallas, our former Movement Building Officer (and before that Migrant Justice intern) in July 2024. Increasingthe resources available for Migrant Justice by 3 days hasensured the campaign has gone from strength to strength with the number of universities divesting rising to 6. Bythe end of the year, there were 14 active groups and the campaign had visited 39 campuses. The University League also had anothersuccessful year. Connecting campaign aims tothe criteria assisted with several campaign wins, and the League continued to gain credibility in the sector. The University League Managerwas invited to speak to atthe UK ENIC {UK national agencyfor international qualifications and skills) conference and forthe firsttimethe SundayTimes used our data in their university rankings for new students. The decision to change the Movement Building and Communication5 Officer post to a Manager position has had a positive impact as it has ensured more leadership ofmovement building and communications.Rosie Rawle was appointed in October2023 and has developed a new social media strategy, run successful student trustee elections, supported the post 92 training programme and the democracy review of Divest Borders, and the beginningof planningfor PcJwp.r Shift 2Q25.
Artivities (Continued...) Fundraising has been largely successful over the year. Income and newly secured contracts from trusts and foundations, which make up the majorityof People & Planet's income, has shown reasonable growth. We funded a shortterm individual fundraiserwho sorted out our gift aid data, trialled an appeal and set up systemsfortracking supporterjourneys. We are hopingthese changes will see a stsbilisation of individual fundraising in 202415 Plans for the future The Climate Justice campaigns will continueto push fordivestment and the end of unethical companies recruiting on campus. The Fossil Free campaign is lookingfoThvard to celebrating 10 years since thefirst university divested from fossil fuels and continuingto develop campaign groups in post 92 and smaller universities.Fossil Free Careers are planning a month of action in the Autumn to kickstart campaignson campuses and strengthen those that currently exist. The Migrant Justice campaign will continue to develop links with partners such as Solidarity Knows No Borders. Alongside groups such as Stop Funding Hate and Migrants Rights Network, we will be sharing learning and exploring newwaysto campaign in this area. The team will continue to strengthen campaign groups across the UK, plan a day of action and support inside track negotiationsto ensure further campaign wins. We will continue to use the University League Methodology to encourage universitiesto commit to being ethical, sustsinable and to agree to our campaign demands. In September 2024, the The University League will be fully integrated into the SundayTimes university guide. In the year ahead we plan to develop a communication strategy to enable us to build our network. And for the first time since 2019, we are planningto hold Power Shift in person, in Chester and will use the event to provide training on campaign skills, political education and our campaign5. We anticipate this yearwill see a reduction in grant income as some longterm grants have ended. We are prospecting for new funders and planning to stabilise our individual fundraising with an autumn appeal and a springdonorring round.
