benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or
services identified in the
accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
The Club organises several weekly
sessions of duplicate bridge aimed at all
levels of experience, runs annual
teaching courses for people wishing to
learn to play, refresher workshops for
members wanting to improve their skills
and has lunchtime classes for primary
age children in a local school.
The club encourages members to
participate in club, county, and national
competitions and invites and welcomes
members not living locally to participate
in online sessions. Members are
encouraged to train as directors by
attending courses run by the EBU, the
**fees of which are paid for by the Club. **

Achievements and Performance

SORP reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the charity,
identifying the difference the
charity’s work has made to
the circumstances of its
beneficiaries and any wider
benefits to society as a
whole.
Para 1.20 Social events arranged by the club
increased during 2025 with the
additional of a Summer Party to the
existing social events - the Anniversary
Pairs competition at a local golf club,
the New Years Party and a wine/cheese
evening for the Combridge Salver
competition. Numbers playing increased
and these events offer an opportunity
for socialising and playing with
members from other sessions whom
they would not normally meet.
There is a 50% discount for members on
benefits or in full time education on all
charges for playing, attending lessons,
or participating in competitions.
Every year the Club supports Children
in Need and the Herts Bridge
Association’s annual local charity (2025
GRIT Hitchin) and donates its used
packs of cards to local community
groups. The club also deals sets of
boards for another local bridge club.
In planning all its activities, the Trustees
have considered the guidance issued by
the Charity Commission on public
benefit.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 The club’s financial position is sound
despite a very large increase in the rent
payable for the hall used for its face to
face sessions. The Club pays for
members to qualify as directors and
subsidises its social events.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 The reserves policy of the Trustees has
for many years been to build up the
financial reserves with the long-term
intention of owning/building or renting
dedicated premises for the club to give
the club more flexibility and
opportunities to expand and greater
security of tenure.
It is becoming extremely unlikely that
the club will ever be able to purchase or
build dedicated premises but the club
will continue to look to adding/extending
accommodation to existing community
buildings or sharing rental property with
other similar groups.
Due to the recent rent increase it is
doubtful that the reserves will continue
to increase as in previous years
Amount of reservesheld Para 1.22 £163000
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 Not applicable
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 Not applicable

uncertainties about the
charity continuing as a going

3 The unrestricted capital funds shown in the accounts are intended to be applied by the club to
obtain greater security of tenure by acquiring a dedicated building/space from which to conduct and
expand their activities. It remains the policy of the trustees to build up and retain reserves for this
purpose when appropriate and possible, to continue to search for any suitable property to buy/
share or lease and to explore opportunities to work with other community groups with similar needs
and aspirations.
