REPORT 1 FEBRUARY 2023 - 31 JANUARY 2024

Martin Keene approached the Foundation in May 2021 asking if we would commission the third Gin No Nagare (Japanese for Flowing Silver ). This was a hand-raised silver carafe where the second was more complex from the first and the third was to be an even greater challenge. The carafe started life as a circular piece of metal and was shaped into its present form as a carafe with a hammer. There are no seams which have been soldered.

During the year, three exhibitions were staged, two in conjunction with the Hand Engravers Association of Great Britain and one solo event. The first Hand Engravers exhibition was in the Yorkshire Dales at the auction house Tennants. TPSC lent a dozen high-quality engraved pieces. There was a good footfall, and as the curator of TPSC, I gave two talks. The exhibition was staged from 9 July to 6 August 2023. It then moved to Edinburgh to feature at Elements, a festival of gold and silver staged by the auction house Lyon & Turnbull and STG from 27-29 October 2023.

It was a pleasure to contribute an essay to Rauni Higson’s exhibition catalogue – Illuminating Silver . The exhibition was staged at Craft in the Bay, Cardiff from 9 September – 29 October 2023. I gave a short talk at Rauni’s request.

The solo exhibition was held at Noonan Mayfair, the specialist numismatic auction house which has added jewellery and silver to its repertoire. It featured

only the work of Gerald Benney and Stewart Devlin, the two leading smiths in the Renaissance of British silver design after World War II. The highlight of the Benney was a run of over 60 gold and silver boxes from 1952 (his first) to 2000. Such a run is unrivalled globally. The highlight of Devlin’s pieces were three brandy warmers of differing shapes he made at the Royal College of Art in the late 1950s to show his skill at hand-raising silver. The final one was located a few weeks before the exhibition opened. See which has a link to the catalogue https://www.noonans.co.uk/news-and-events/pearson-silver-exhibition/

A set of six goblets by Jussuf Hussein Abbo with alternating silver and silver gilt bands, and turned stems on conical bases. London 1970. Abbo was born in 1935 and studied painting at Brighton College of Art from 1956-60. He worked at the V&A as a conservationist from 1963-4 and as a silver designer for William Comyns from 1967-9. In the 1970s he became a professional graphic artist and a freelance silver designer. He subsequently moved to the USA with his family to concentrate on graphic art.
