SORP - Statement of Recommended practice | |
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | The principal purpose of Leigh Park Baptist Church is the advancement of the Christian Faith according to the principles of the Baptist denomination. The church may also advance education and carry out other charitable purposes in the United Kingdom and / or other parts of the World |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
The activities of Leigh Park Baptist Church include, but are not restricted to the following: ● Regular public worship, prayer, bible study, preaching and teaching. ● Baptism, as defined in the Baptist Union’s Declaration of Principle ● Communion of the Lord’s supper which shall normally be observed at least once a month ● Evangelism and mission, locally, regionally, nationally and internationally |
| Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit |
Para 1.18 | Trustees have regard to the guidance on public benefit. In regard to our desire to benefit our community in 2020 - as a church we have remained open for public worship online and the furtherment of peoples spiritual development. Throughout the year when restrictions have allowed we have continued running a church football team with training taking place weekly along with games for local leagues; operated a board games evening. We also made available the rooms within the church to hire for events including celebrations, training and learning and perfecting skills. |
| ADDITIONAL INFORMATION (OPTIONAL) You may choose to include further statements where relevant about: SORP reference Policy on grant making Para 1.38 Policy on social investment including program related investment Para 1.38 Contribution made by volunteers Para 1.38 Other ACHIEVEMENTS AND PERFORMANCE SORP reference Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole Para 1.20 Kathryn looked forward at our AGM to digging deep and enhancing our relationship with God and each other. We looked at clearing ground for new growth and finding new ways of reaching our community. During 2020 we have had to adapt our ways of meetings together. We have moved to using Zoom for our main meetings and Facebook for communicating with the wider community. This year membership has risen to 54. Sunday morning services continue to include adults and young people, with suitable age appropriate groups taking place. Community youth work this year has been a challenge as groups have not been permitted to meet. We have continued to provide space on a Sunday for young people to meet with us as a church. We were planning a meeting for some of the young people at the beginning of November but new restrictions meant that this couldn’t happen. Hopefully next year will provide more opportunities. Our church is blessed with a large outside space which allowed us to meet for prayer during August and September. These were held alongside zoom |

meetings with the same focus of meeting and praying together. This year we've had a focus on trying to improve our environmental impact as a church. We've been doing this through an organisation called Ecochurch that helped us to assess and gain an understanding of how our church impacts the environment that we live in. Overall we managed to achieve a bronze rank in their system with gold in Worship and Teaching. Alongside our environmental impact we have been looking at how we can support our community during this and the coming years, so we have partnered with Kintsugi Hope. They are an organisation that provides training and group material that enable safe non judgemental space for people to discuss their wellbeing. During periods where restrictions allowed we were able to hire our building out to local community groups. To support our hiring of the building we have had some cleaners that can help us maintain COVID security throughout the building whilst it is in use. Numbers for football training have been consistently around 30 to 35. Since the lockdown in March we utilised a council grant to replace the Sports Hall flooring so that we can better serve our community once things return to normal. | Investment performances against objectives Para 1.41 Other FINANCIAL REVIEW SORP reference Review of the charity’s financial position at the end of the period Para 1.21 The finances of Leigh Park Baptist Church have been very stable for a a number of years and whilst giving increased a little, the budget for the coming year identifies that some outgoings in 2020 will be lower than in the previous year and the opportunity will be taken to repay in full the loan that remains outstanding from previous property repair works and improve the floor in our second hall. Statement explaining the policy for holding reserves stating why they are held Para 1.22 Although the Charity has no restricted funds and all funds are therefore available to be used, the Trustees consider it productive to retain a surplus sufficient to meet 3 months of outgoings. This surplus was comfortably maintained throughout 2020 and at the year end. Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 Reserves sufficient to meet 3 months of outgoings Reasons for holding zero reserves Para 1.22 n/a Details of fund materially in deficit Para 1.24 There are no funds or subsidiary undertakings that are materially in deficit. However, the charity carries an identifiable liability by virtue of its membership of the Baptist Union of Great Britain multi-employer Pension scheme. The liability that arises here has been very much reduced in recent years by proactive actions taken by the wider Baptist Family Solution and the remaining liabilities are scheduled to be recovered by the payment of excess contributions and the liability repaid well within the 10 year plan that has been agreed with the Pension Trustees. Market fluctuations have caused the liability to increase from £91,800 at December 2019 to £94,500 by December 2020 – but it has subsequently reduced to £78,400 following the year end. Explanation of any uncertainties about the charity continuing as a Para 1.23 There are no uncertainties that would give rise to the charity’s ability to continue as a going concern. |
