Two Presbyter ministers are stationed in the Circuit by the Methodist Connexion. The churches have a combined membership of around 450. Mission statement The Mission of the Ctrcuit is 'To enjoy and spread the 8Tr)d news of the love of God as seen in Jesus Christ. The Hastings, Bexhill and Rye Circuit continues to work with the Churches in the circuit to offer inspiration and support in each local context so as to Help people encounter and experience God's love, hope and blessing through worship and social action Nurture faith through Worship, bible and wider studies, fellowship and prayer groups. mutual encouragement and pastoral care. both within the circuit and across the wider Church. Provide opportunities for acts of Christian public worship in styles appropriate for the context and community around the local churches. This includes the occasional offices of weddings. baptisms and funerals. Funerals take place in the name of the Methodist Church in the Circuit churches as well as at Hastings and Eastbourne Crematoria land occasionally further afield). Continue to provide safe and welcoming spaces for people of all ages and circumstances. Offer appropriate sUPPOrt and care to individuals who request it, especially at critical periods of their lives Continue to explore way of supporting local communities across the CircuÉt Engage with the wider mission of the Methodist Church at home and abroad Achlevement and Perfomiance 202V2022 The Circuit welcomed Revd Philip Wagstaff as Superintendent in September 2020 and under his leadership the Circuit has continued to resource and support the local churches in their worship, learning and outreach to their local communities. Along with many other organisations in the community the challenges of the Covid-19 pandemic remain and the impact of the pandemic will continue to be explored during the coming year.

The Rev Tricia Williams retired in July 2022 and her ministry in the Circuit over the past seven years was marked by a farewell service which was held at Little Common Methodist Church. The Rev Crawford Logan joined the Ministerial team in September 2022, having previously being stationed in the aarton on Sea section of the Tendring Circuit in Essex. The Circuit Leadership Team ICLTI has met regularly during the year, together with the Presbyters, to review and develop the attivities of the Circuit so as to support the work of the local churches. The Superintendent and members of the CLT held Conversations with each of the churches in the circuit over the year to enable them to review their ministry, mission. their current f5nancial sttuation and the impact of the Covid-19 pandemic. These conversations continue to inform the development of Circutt policy and future plannin& A Circuit vision day was held at Trinity Methodist Church, facilitated by members of the South East District Learning Network. Representatives from all of the circutt churches met together to explore ways of developing the life, mission and ministry of the Circuit which would then faulitate mission within the circuit churches. The Superintendenys responsibility as Govemor for Staplecross Methodist Sthool and part of the Bridge Federation was resumed and he has developed a good relationship with the school communty. The Federation includes Staplecross Methodist Primary School and Salehurst Church of England Primary Sthool. The circuit nominated a member of the Circuit to be a foundation Govemor during the year. Members of the Circuit continue to use of Zoom video conferencing. Zoom has been invaluable in enabling the Circuit to provide worship for people at home as well as provide a meeting place for coffee mornings, bible study and prayer groups. This has helped in reducing the carbon footprint of the circuit and the polivi of the circvit is to use Zoom conferencing during the winter period with MO￿ face to face meetings taking place in the Springto Autumn period. The Circuit has fornied a SafeguardingTeam to jointly undertake the responsibilities of the Circuit Safeguarding Officer and ensure compliance wtth the Methodist Church Safeguarding Policies. Procedures and Guidance throughout the CircuiL The Circuit has formed a Property Team with responsibility to act on behalf of the Circuit Meeting wÉth responsibility for all matters related to Circuit property, and to support local churches with their property, including property sthemes. In April 2021 a property at Woodlands, Little Common in Bexhill-on-sea was purchased as a manse and the fom)er

manse in Holmesdale Road was put on the market. A bridging loan wa5 taken out with Methodist Chapel Aid so that this transaction could be completed in the Sprin& This is noted in the accounts forthe year end of the transaction period. The transaction went through, and the Chapel Aid loan has been repaid. The two manses. at Little Common and Hastings will provide accommodation for the Circuit ministers for many years to come. Plans for 2022-23 Under the leadership of the Superintendent Minister, the Circutt will continue to explore ways to renew the mission and ministry of the Circuit and develop a forward plan for discipleship, mission and ministry. including the employment of lay workers as appropriate, for the next 3-5 years. As part of this process the Circuit Mission statement will be revisited so as to more closely define the present work and witness of the Methodist Church in the area. It is envisaged that the next change in the ministerial team will take place in 2025. While at present there is no immediate need to look at how the presbyterial team will be maintained as it is envisioned that both ministers will be stationed in the circuit for the next three and five years. The strategic work that has been and will be carried out as the circuit explores mission and ministry will continue to inform fvture plans for ministerial change5 whenever they occur. In accordance with advi￿ given by the Connexlonal Property Officer and the Trustees for Methodist Church Purposes ITMCP,) who are Custodian Trustees for Methodist property. the circuit and local managingtru5tees continue to make arrangements for the disposal of the Sackville Road and Rye premises, monies raised will be used for mlssion and ministry locally and auoss the circuit. During 2022- 2023 A Circuit Community Issues team will be formed which will inform the Circuit meeting about areas of community lrfe in whith the churches are. and mI￿t be. engaged. The team will seek partnerships with existing community groups and explore ways of community support not currently undertaken by existing groups. The terms of reference for the team have been agreed by the Circuit Meeting. Members of the circuit have links with the k)cal group who support asylum seekers. An environmental team will be formed which will help inform the Circuit meeting about ways thatthe environment can be safeguarded, and churches can work towards a carbon neutral status over time. Some churche5 ill the circuit are exploring how to become eco churches using the resource produced by a Rocha UK. The terms of reference for the team have been agreed by the Circuit meeting.

The Circuit Worship leaders and Local Preachers, as well as locally arranged worship, the presbyters and visiting preachers continue to ￿lFIl appointments on the Circuit Preaching Plan. The leaders of worship and preathers meeting continue to encourage members of the circuit to explore becoming a local preacher or worship leader. Those in training are supported by the Local Tutors With an online course which looks at y￿y5 of leading worship and exploring theology in the 21 ￿ntUry. As part of what the circuit can offer to members, circuit online worship will continue to be explored. Many of the circuit churches have voted to solemnise same sex marriages and resources will be made available during the year to support this ministry. Many of the Churches are (or are exploring) ways of providing a warm space to offer to the community around the Church buildings. In this churches are liaising wlth their local authorities and the national wami spa￿5 initiative. Churches and individuals support their local foodbanks and this will continue over the next year Work with Christians against Poverty {CAPI takes place in some of the Circuit Churches where rt is appropriate to do so. Other thurches SUPPOrt the work of CAP financially. Members of the Circuit have been Involved in the ADDER project which is a national initiative offerin8 dtfferent ways of rehabtlitation. As well as Seriices of Holy Communion taking place regularly across the circuit, services of Holy Communion are offered to members of local care homes and in members homes when requested. The circutt a￿ grateful to those who support this ministry tocally and across the circuit through a national authorisation agreed by the Methodist Conference. Many Churches have developed Messy Churches which offer activities and worship for children. young people and famtlies usin8 the concept provide by the Messy Church Organisation. Churches continue to provide space for meeting in the community Ways of developing opportunities for older people to engage with worshlp wlll be explored. Links are maintained with the local Methodist Home {MHAI, Lauriston in St.Leonards-on-Sea Ythere a worship team support the chaplain there. Our work with church families, especially those under 40 will be explored and developed during the year. The Circuit continues to explore ways of supporting mission and ministry in the ten churches across the circult. The Circuit also SUPPOrt the work at the Historic WesleVs chapel at Winchelsea. This Church and the nearby Wesley Tree have national

Sign[fican￿ to the Methodist Church as John Wesley preached his last outdoor sermon under the tree before his death in 1791. The Chapel is the responsibility of the Circult Meeting who appoint a management committee to deal with the day to day management of the chapel. The doors are open when stsffing permits, with priority given to opening the doors when events take place in the town. The management team are developing a small museum area in the chapel to assist in placing Methodism in its historic as well as contemporary context. The Circuit meeting also have responsibllity as ManagingTrustees for Centenary House In Bexhill-on-sea. This property (which was a dwelling house before being converted into office and meetings space) was purchased a number of year5 a80. and both the Circuit and Christchurch Methodist Church Bexhill have an interest in the property. There is management ComM￿ee which is made up of members of the circuit meeting {or nominated by the meeting) and members of Christthurch Bexhill. The Circuit Meeting is also responsible as Managing TTUStees for the Sackville Road Church building, which is in the process of being sold, and a house in Knebworth Road, Bexhill-on-sea which is rented out As with 2020-2021, 2022 -23 has within it many opportunities to develop mission and ministry and to explore how we continue to engage and work with members of the communities around the churches. a5 well as engaging with community groups in the area. There are, as there has been this year, challenges as new vRys of working are explored due to Covid 19. We are also taking into account the increase in energy costs which continues to affect the churches financialty as public buildings, together with ongoing maintenance costs. While these are a concern, WWF of approaching the future are being explored and the Qrcuit continues to support the local churche5 with advice and on goingsupport. le5 and crynmitment for the Hastln Bexhill and Safe uardin Princi The Circuit commits itself to ensuring the implementation of the Connexional Safeguarding Policy; government legislation, guidance and safe practice in the circuit and the churches. The Circuit commits itself to the provision of support, advice and training for lay and ordained people that will ensure people are dear and confident about their roles and responsibilities in safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and adults who may be vulnerable.
