We are blessed to have 8 well-maintained churth buikling and communty centre in tha hub of Rainhill, opposite our chuich-linked primary school. A quinouernn￿l inspection is due in 2024. Stanley Bear Club meets on a Monday in church for under 55 with their pArentslcarers. Then on tr8 1st Sunday of the month we gather together for our All Together for W0￿￿1P Service. TtEra is a midweek Servi￿ on Thursdays at 9".30am. Cornmunion ￿ taken wt to people at hom8 and to four Nursing Homes in ihe area. Cedric Howe Nursillg Homa bring a srnall group to our SuTrJ8y moming 10..30arn worship. Revd Oswe Jesson is currentty exploring ministry wth Avondala and Shevington Care Homès at the request of thèlr rnanagement. Our finanw detailed in this report show that we are a ger￿rouS congregats.on bui w8 nè&J to grow giving from naw members. Weakn8S$gS Our volunteers are now older than they Wa￿ and we need to grow new voluntsers to Share the k)ad. A significant amount of ministry is h81d by a relatNdy small proFK)rtDn ol our congregation. WÈ need to develop and widen o sh￿d minislri8s. We are missing tso significant generations teenagers and young retireds this is a challenge bjt there are signs that it is Changing. Vvhile we are gènerous. we néed to grow new givers. We are generous bul sometimes focu5 too much on fijndraising. Our prayèr life togeiher was also li5tad as a weakness. W6 have great links with schools in the area particularly St Ann's Prirnary bul also several other primary schools and Ralnhill High School and Tower College. Links have been reestabllshed with Oakdene Primary School in 2023. We have good links with other denomin8tions in Rainhill. Pastoral serVI￿S and memorial s$Nices also provlde great opportunities for outreach. The cornrnunily choir has Slrenglhened the singing in our own congregation it has encouraged those from other churches bul 8150 drawn in new faces. Beyond our walls there a￿ many opportunities in our community. We can bring people in to $ervice8 bul are going out lo where people are? Threats Covid has left many in our congregation feeling significantly older and fraSler. whble a new generation leads busy live5 and don't create space for God. Our diversity can lead to ten5ion5 bul Sl Anns has shown a courage to think e￿al￿elY and try new things. Our costs are rising. Fewer people are doing more things and are feeling tired. We have much to Celebrate as detailed in this report, many opportunities in our comrnunity but we should not ignore the ch8llenges. IEvents and Hlghlights of the Year Across the year several discipleship groups and study groups have met. A wornen's growth group led by Jean Pearson has been very popular. A small group at Reeve Court 8150 meet, led by Paula Bolton Maggs and Pam Samson. As a Church we used "Jesus 100. by Robin Gambol over the early part of the year. These 100 réadings and reflections following the life of Jesus wera also used as part of 8 serrnon series and for personal reflection al home. Jean's group and the Reeve Court group have wnlinued to explore Wornen of the Bibio. The Start course has been run over the course of 2023 the clergy for new enquirers. The Alpha Course was run in church during the Avlumn 012023 with a fellowship meal. anle Bear Club continues to bring in rnany fresh faces, children and their p8rents rediscovering faith 8$ they leath their children about Jesus. Vthat started as an innovative way of working with toddlers Is now an established part of Sl Ann's ministry. Parents and grandparents find a place to meet and build friendships while their children play in a safe and happy environment. Through Stanley Bear Club, we help Christian families share faith with their children through Bible stones, prayer and songs. We also Sha￿ the Christian faith with many for the first time who come through our doors. Thè learn contsnues to be slrenglhened with hard working volunteer5, led by Margaret Lulner and Rad)el Oxley. A grant of £300 was received from the Ctrop to support the work. The mmuni choir led by Paula Bollon-maggs onc• again led and perfomed some fantastic singlng al our Carol service in December and during Holy Week when they perfc>rmed "Torn Curtain" an Easter musical by Roger Jones. The choir brings together people from diff&rgnl churches but a150 many who are r6di5covering their faith through song. A highlight of the year was the visit by Roger Jones. a renowned Christian song writer and musician. He ran a day of worship and celebration and prea¢hed al the Sunday seNlce the following day. Our ecvmenical links ¢onlinue to remain a valued part of our community, St Anns h05ted during Lent 2023 with clergy fTorn each of the four churches in Rainhill leading worship focu55ed on the book of Jarnes. The services were followed by a hunger lunch which raised money for the work of Christian Aid. Revd Andy Moffoot led a service during the Week of Player for Christian Unity in early 2024 and Revd David led a service in St James. The walk of witness on Good Friday was a busy event walking from Sl Barts to St Anns for an act of worship logeffter. Clergy from Sl Anns abng with other chuiches in the area also support a regular Sunday aftemoon service in Reeve ¢ourt led by Pam SamsDn and David Monks. Schools Links. Our links with Sl Anns primary continue to ftourish. Clergy lead weekly face lo face as5ernblies and the whole school have returned to church for services across thè y8ar. AS we went through 2023 children from St Ann s School once again joined us for setvicÉs for Ash Wednesday, Easter, Ascension and Christmas as well as a Se[W￿ to mark the start of the new temi whera. a bequest enables the church lo present eaeh new starter with a 8ib5e. The Thursday congregation welcomes Key Stage 2 children from one year group each hav lerrn for a joint communlon semce. Revd Alan led a Chrlslmas 5erviTr for Year 7 al Rainhill High School in thurch with support from Kirsty Jamili from The Mount in St Helens. The sixth form carDI service wa5 repla￿d by a Bieakfasl Event hosted by the sixth lom and attended by several of Sl Anns congregation. This after schotAs drgp-in on a Friday aftemoon in the Centre provides a safe space where secondary pupils come and ch81, play games, make thing5 and socialise with their peers. The numbers have sellled from an initial 5Ql lo an average of 25, Thanks lo the Co-op for their regular generosity and to the Gala Comrnittee for funds for equipment. The team of volunteers is faithful, cheerful and a real blesslng lo a great group of youngslers. A grant of £500 was re￿IVed from Rainhill Gala. Our Pastoral Servi 5 continue lo share the loys and sorrows of life wilh our church and the wider community through our pastoral 5ervioes. We hav& a small number ol weddings and a high demand lor baplisms. Pastoral and baptism teams have grown 5trongei over the last year and have improved our welcome lo these services. Quarterly Baptism preparation mornings led by Revd David, Revd Julia Jesson and Revd Alan have been warmly welcomed by families as an opportunity lo meet one another and th8 tèam and think about the promises they were making. This was only possible due lo our wonderful baptism team. Funeral ministry in our Parish ChuTch continues to be busy but has been particularly difficult as we have lost several members of our ¢hur¢h ￿MMunity over the last year. All of this takès good administration and the appointment of Gill Crawtord as Church Adrninislralor has gieatly redu¢ed the ¢leigy woiktoad and made sure everything runs smoothly. St Helens Deane embarked on a transition to 8 18rgèr parish model covering the whole ol St Helens to reduce costs and enhan￿ ministry, called Fit for Mission 2 IFFM21. Some ¢hur¢hes including St Anns hava vot$d not lo join. Rèvd David has been involved with some of the FFM2 work. rn051 nol8bly the buildings team, as part of his training. Thi8 generosity in ministry has dernonstrated to the deanery and lo the dioGese how ¢uraey ￿ULd work based in a nonFFM2 parish and St Anns have been invited lo apply for another curate when Revd David moves on. Sl Anns still continues to be part of St Helens Deanery and representatives attend Deanery Synod. Civic Services continue to grow year on year with our Annual Remerntxance Day seryice and gathering at the war memorial. It was a wonderful opportunity to welcome serviTr veterans back into church with the musical assistance of the Parr Band. A short service to mark Merchant Seafarers Day is now a regular occurrence each Seplernber. In 2023 WÈ celebrated the Coronation of HM King Charles and in 2024 there wi51 be the 80th Anniversary of the Norrnandy landings. Our arish ma azine continues to provide a varied and interesting read and a vlt81 sour¢e of ¢onne¢lion for our community. Delphine Corcoran and Lynn Bishop have worked hard lo make sure th81 the magazine continues lo be edited to a high standard. Delphine received the "Rainhill Good Citizenship Award. in recognition of hei work. The new look Rocket celebrated its 10th Anniversary in 2023. The church Website and Facebook pagè have been supported and updated regularly by Gemma Darracott and Ben Bollon-maggs. The MotheVs Union MU continues to meet regularly organising interesting speakeis praying for Ihe community and the der world. They continue to support many of their housebound members by setving afternoon tèa and hot pot mèals followod by Gommunion. The hosting of these meetings in church ha5 been appre¢ialed by Ihose who came. The cornmillee are sharing leadership wdl but the continuance of our MU will depend on the involvement of all its mernbers in the running of the group. At Easter, Chri31ma8, Harvest and other festlvals the flower uild continue to fill & Anns church with wonderful floral decorations On￿ again. Kathy Swift produces a wonderful seasonal display by the creche area. Rainhill Famiers Market is now an established event and aims lo improve th6 health of Rainhill. Regular stalls sell fresh bread, fish, fruit and veg, cheese and cakes Plants, garden omarHenls and craft stalls sell locally produced produce. Two stalls demonstrate the social enterprise nature ol the market and enrich the usual produce with deli¢ious baked goods provided by HM P8$1ies who support the employment of ex-offendors and Cafè Lazil brings a global krtchen lo Rainhill through their work with asylum seekers. A thriving café was held in the centre serving hol drinks and food. Café Laziz will be running the café when the Market reopens in Mard) 2024. Many thanks to Geoff and the stall holders for driving this forward and to Sheila and Joan and kitchen h¢lp¢rs for their support and hard work. Waterside Pro ect Revd Mark Orrell. a FFM2 curÈte, has been buikling links in Waterside Village and has made some good contacts. Suwesslul links have beèn built with the Boars Head Pub, on the Elton Head Rd, re5ulling in a biweek Bible study "Pints and Psalms" a Remernberanee service in November and a cA)ntemporary carols service were hosted in the pub. The biannual Garden Trail was also run in July providing an opportunity for lot ol soc4alising in some beautiful gardens and raising fvnds for St Ann5 and Wllowbrook Hospicè. A very Suc￿sS￿J1 Christrnas rnarkel in church on 2nd De￿mber w85 o(Ynbined ￿th the Farmer5 Market on the same day producing a wonderful Chrislmas event This was followed by a Christmas lunch on 3rd December. Thè Toy 8PFeal was generousty supported and collected a mountain of toy5 and 12 food hampers were distributed. All passed on to needy families in Rainhill and the wider eoffltnunity. The Parish Gmn PGS Scheme ￿ was launched by St Anns in May 2022 the uptake by th8 ￿ngregatIon was so significant that the di0￿Se wanted to have St Anns as part ol a promotional wdeo. The adcption of the PGS has meant that most gift aid rK)w appears as PGS giving. Paul and Lynn Bishop continue to process Ihg Gift Aid donations but th856 have been much lowèr th¥F) previous yèar8 as rnost gift aid is claimed through PGS. Other charities arè supported by one off collèctions across the year often donated direcdy to the charitles concerned wthoul appearlng in these accounts. Donations as a resu￿ of th8 chriSting￿ SeN(ee raised £295 and donation boxes raised £602. A donation of £1CQ was m8de to Willowbrook from the Garden Trail. We continue to support St Helens Foodbank thrO￿h donations of cash and non-perishable food collected in churth and taken there by Hilary Jesse. The Toy collecth.on in Advent was very well supported reaching out to needy families here and in the wider community.. Christmas HampErs were ¢ollected and distributed to 12 families in Rainhill. ￿ joined with other churches in Rainhill over Lent for our Lent lurKhes whleh raised £708 for Chrislan Md. Average attendance at Vvorship seN across the year in 2023 was on a Sunday191 adults and 19 children), 14 at the BCP Parish Communion, 52 al thè CW Parish Comrnunion and 25 thults and 1S children at Platform 2. The "All Tr4elher for Worship" on the first Sunday ol the month brings together the cong￿gatIon frorn our traditional pansh ccynmunion IPlatform 11 and Plalforn 2. along th many others who identify with this servi￿. During 2023 on average 78 adults and 22 children galhered for this serv￿. Stanley Bear Club was attended by 23 ￿Ults and 17 children on average. Advent was a busy season wth 104 adults and 67 children attending the Christingle service and the carol service led by the Communty Choir was joined by St Anns school choir and was attended by 272 Adults and 35 childr8n. During Advent school 5gMcès, we welcom 1563 young peO￿e and adults 10 Sl Ann's Church from 4 of our10&g1 schools. Cacol and crib servicè held on the aftemoon of Chrisknas Eve relumed lo ils usual busy format and was attended by 190 adults and 86 children. Servi￿$ IM Christmas EvelDay were attended by 109 peopb. A Parish Communion servi￿ is held each Thursday moming which is aitended on av$raJ by 16 worshippers. Chur¢h bulldings The fabric ol our church building was regularty checked and maintained by our wardans and assistant warden throughout th& yèar. A quinquenniJ inspethon is due in 2024. A new LKiiler installed in 2021 arrived just in time to help th our ehurch healing just as bills soafyd. Prudent use of Ihe heating and redU￿d tsriffs acros5 this year meant Ihat healing bills were [edu￿d compared with 2022 but continued to place a fin8ncial burden on the chuTCh. P•rforman¢e of Investments The irnprovernenl in interest rates over the coursè ol the year gave a rnuch ne£ded boost to our income as retum on our invesbments in 2023. PCC fiJnds are inv8St8d in the Central Board ol Financè ol the Church of Engkqnd Deposit Aco)unt and eam the hKJhèst rata of interest PO551b￿ in the p￿sent economi¢ clirnats. FINANCIAL REVIEW Reserves policy The ParLthial Church Council has a pjlity of maintsining reserve5 for emergenaes which May anse, the income frorn such reserves being available for usè in gèneral fijnds. The PCC alsQ Strives to maintain at least three months normal eXFenditur8 a5 an ongoing reserve in the general account. The PCC and Finan￿ Cornmittees monitor these funds. A Fabric of £130 (named the Heritage Fund) is at present and a g?rtsrdl ￿SerVe fvnd (Deposit Fund) stands at £84,785. In the present financlal clirnate én(x)utaging regular giving fr(m 8 new generation wll be tha]￿ngIng, however adopting electfonic gmw and the introduction ol the Parish Giving Scheme has helped to move this forward. Direct giving by rnembers of the church still accounts lor the majority of our incomg, and the income tax recovered through Gift Atd during the year has made a sBJnifi¢ant difference. A draft budget for 2024 has been submitted but control of finall￿S wll wquire prudent financial management and increased giving, An e¥p8nsion of CLJmmitted giving 15 being pursued by the PCC, as are other option5 utilising modern technology.
