ANNUAL GENERAL MEETING OF THE NEW ZEALAND COMMUNITY ASSOCIATION

LONNY WILSONCROFT COMMUNITY CENTRE, STEPPING LANE, DERBY DE1 1GL

MONDAY 18[TH] SEPTEMBER 2023

ASSOCIATION BUSINESS

Hours of usage at the Lonny Wilsoncroft Community Centre on Stepping Lane over the period since our last AGM have slightly improved over the past 12 months from 20.5 hours per week, to 21 hours per week. We have a couple of groups who use the hall only once a month, Caleidoscope drummers, (4 hour slot one Saturday each month), and a new book club which meets once a month on a Monday to review the book they have read. Our martial arts classes are still with us, and our two churches on a Sunday, we also have our Hooked on Crochet group which meets each Monday afternoon, and our Warm Space which meets on a Thursday afternoon and our film club which meets on a Friday afternoon. Our Mother and baby group finished at the beginning of the year, due to the leader moving away from the area.

Our Lunch n Meet Luncheon Club is still going strong. Our wonderful Chief Chef, Mu has stepped down after bringing the lunch club back after the pandemic, but we are fortunate enough to have Lisa Higginbottom back with us cooking each week. Lisa along with volunteers, Pauline, Sue, Ne-ne and myself make sure that the lunch n meet is a wonderful experience for all those that attend each week. It is a credit for everyone that is involved now and has been involved in the past that this activity is still going strong and providing not only nutritious and delicious food at a very reasonable price (just £3.00 for two courses), but also providing a social and friendly atmosphere for those that attend. Ross is still volunteering to drive some of the attendees to and from the centre and also delivering take away meals to those who are housebound in our mini bus. A big thank you to all involved in this activity.

A thank you also to Ross once more, who has been taking folks out on a Monday morning on our weekly shopping trip. This is a very popular service which lots of people in our area take advantage of. Thanks also to Lisa who steps in when Ross takes a well earned break.

The centre is still popular with local families who hire the hall to hold childrens parties, and we have also hosted the local police team who are holding surgeries from time to time to meet with local residents to discuss any problems they may be having with anti social behaviour.

We were fortunate to have a visit from the Police and Crime Commissioner, Angelique Foster at the beginning of June, who came along to talk to local residents and hear their concerns regarding an increase in drug dealing in the area. She was accompanied by senior police officers and our local Councillors also attended.

In November 2022 the NZCA was again invited to take part in the Remembrance Day Memorial Service at the Memorial on Prince Charles Avenue. We had our volunteers out putting up the lamp post poppies prior to the event, so a big thank you to Andy, Lynn and Ross for doing this again and for Ross providing transport to take local residents up to the Memorial to take part in the service.

This years event will also include a parade from St Francis Church to the Memorial and we will hopefully be taking part in this.

The Nearly New Zealand Charity Shop is doing very well and back to being an asset both to the community and to the association by providing much needed funds.

A big thank you to those who work in the shop, Jonathan, Glynn, Ne-ne and Angie. Also many thanks to those that work behind the scenes to keep the shop stocked and donations sorted. Mu, Fay, Sue, Jane and Charmaine have done a sterling job. Charmaine has also taken on looking after the stock room, making sure the rag bin is emptied regularly, moving unwanted stock along to other people and listing many items on on line sites which brings in much need funds.

The biggest project we started last year was our Pantry Support food bank. This started in September 2022, and took place over 2 days each week. Tuesday 4.30 until 6.30pm and Wednesday 12 noon until 4pm. We partnered with the Food 4 Thought Alliance, who provided a lot of the food that we gave out each week, the NZCA donating £500 a month to the Alliance for this service.

At the start of the project we had between 15 and 20 families and individuals signed up to use the Pantry, this increased immensely through the winter months until we had over 80 families and individuals attending each week. We also had referrals from Food 4 thought Alliance who may attend, for one or several weeks at a time.

As Spring approached the numbers gradually went down until by the time we finished at the end of June we had around 35 families/individuals.

During the length of the project many volunteers attended to help each week. Several people went to collect the food each week, mostly Max Halford and his wife Alice, along with Pam and Chris Brain, Charmaine and her mum Avril. The following volunteers attended Tuesday and Wednesday sessions to help the users collect their food parcels, San, Kacie, Somer, Melissa, Charmaine, Anne Marie, Sam, Margaret, Sue, Pauline, Mu, Fay, Brenda, Jane, Jeanette, Ben, Phil, and various other members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints who came along from time to time to help out and also collected food and toiletries each week to help with the project.

It was a very rewarding project to be a part of, as week by week we witnessed friendships being forged, and many local residents who were in dire need receiving much needed help. Their gratefulness for this service was certainly evident, with some of those attending making cakes for the volunteers, and thanks being given on a weekly basis. Quite often tears

were shed by both those using the service, who felt great relief at being helped and by the volunteers who witnessed this.

As the Chair of the Association, I felt extremely proud to be a part of this project and was very proud of the atmosphere that was evident at each session.

All of our volunteers, treated those attending with the utmost respect and dignity, the volunteers followed the guidelines set out at the beginning of the project and worked well as a team. It was an absolute pleasure to be a part of this. We have applied for funding to start the Pantry project up again, and have been told that we have a small amount to start the pantry as soon as the money comes through to the bank account. We will once again be working with Food 4 Thought Alliance, who are very happy that we will be back to assist them with their work. We have a larger grant which we are still waiting to hear about, from the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. We are hopeful that this will come through in the near future and will mean that the Pantry can continue for at least 12 months.

Our lovely gardeners Andy and Lynn have spent another year, looking after the street planters close to the centre and the centre garden, which has matured beautifully this year. We are so very grateful for their hard work and dedication throughout the year which has made our centre a little oasis of beauty.

Grateful thanks to go all the volunteers who distribute our magazine which is now delivered every 2 months, rather than monthly, to cut down on cost. We are very grateful for your hard work.

There have been a few extraordinary events this year. Firstly, in June this year our special couple, Pauline and Nick, finally tied the knot to become Mr and Mrs Noon. Pauline and Nick met after volunteering to help out at the Lunch n Meet luncheon club. We were all so happy to witness this special event and then to celebrate with a party at the centre during the evening.

The two other extraordinary events involved myself. In April this year I was invited to attend a reception at 10 Downing St for Community Champions. It was a wonderful day, which included meeting our local MP Amanda Solloway and having a tour of the Houses of Parliament. The second event happened just a few weeks ago when I was asked to attend a meeting with ‘a senior cabinet minister’. I was invited to Hannah Fields Community Garden in Littleover along with about 50 other people from different community organisations in Derby. Once there I discovered that the senior cabinet minister was actually THE senior cabinet minister, Rishi Sunak the Prime Minister.

On both occasions I was very honoured to represent the wonderful people I work with at the NZCA. I only wish I could have taken you all along with

me. It is a testament to the fact that the work carried out by the NZCA is of great worth, and we should all be proud of the impact we have on the lives of local people.

We have been very busy in the past few months, fundraising so that we can pay the winter bills, as this is a big concern to the Association.

We have had some fantastic events, which have raised much needed funds, and many people have helped us with these events. A very successful Auction was held, big thanks to Charmaine, who approached many local businesses and asked for donations. We also had a sponsored walk on the local park which was attended by all our local councillors who took part and got sponsors for their efforts. Another great event was our ‘ABC of Music’ evening, which our good friend Phil, who helped us with the Pantry, put together. An evening of music with our own Ross, and several amateur singers and musicians. The evening was attended by the Mayor of Derby, Cllr Alan Graves and was a great success.

Thanks also need to go to Ben Sage, who raised funds for us by doing a skydive in August. This was something very much out of his comfort zone and took a great deal of courage and we thank Ben for his sterling effort, he raised over £500. Our latest fund raiser was a Mexican and Karaoke Night, and we need to thank Kieran Tickner who did a sterling job cooking a fabulous 3 course meal on a very hot evening. Thanks also to DJ Furij who ran the Karaoke for us, waiving his usual fee for doing so.

Our fundraising efforts will have to continue throughout the winter months, as our energy bills are extremely high. We are very grateful for the support from local residents and all our friends who help us in our work.

My special thanks go to the New Zealand Community Association Management Committee, who work tirelessly to keep the community centre and charity shop running and enable all of the different NZCA activities which run in the area to go ahead. Thank you, Mu, Emily, San, Kelly, Melissa, Lynn and Leanne for your hard work and dedication. Without you, the activities and events we do would not be possible.

We look forward to the next 12 months and hope to be able to help our community grow together and helping those who are vulnerable in our neighbourhood.
