Trustees’ Annual Report for the period

From 29 June 2021 – 28 June 2022

Charity name: Greyhound Rescue North East

Charity registration number: 1131609

Objectives and Activities

SORP reference
Summary of the purposes of
the charity as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 To relieve the suffering of Greyhounds,
Lurchers and Whippets by providing
necessary care and temporary shelter
and by placing them in suitable homes.
To advance the education of the public in
the care of Greyhounds, Lurchers and
Whippets.
Summary of the main
activities in relation to those
purposes for the public
benefit, in particular, the
activities, projects or services
identified in the accounts.
Para 1.17 and
1.19
Connections with the public and
information about the dogs in our care
were conveyed via social media and our
website.
Home checks are now being carried out
in person, virtual home checks are also
still being used during the re-homing
process where appropriate.
Advice prior to and after adoption was
offered to the public either through a
virtual platform or over the phone.
During the Covid-19 pandemic Dogstrust
were in need of dogs for their rehoming
centres. We facilitated the handover of 72
dogs directly from the trainers to Dogs
Trust. Unfortunately Dogstrust have not
been able to take in dogs we have
requested placements for since the lock-
downs ended. Other dog rescues are also
struggling to accommodate dogs and this
is putting pressure on our charity to offer
dogs a shelter space. We are still liaising
with other rescues in the hope that the
situation improves.
We have maintained a strict policy of
never euthanising a healthy dog by
accommodating dogs that would be
difficult to rehome with the Greyhound
Rescue North East team, in foster
placements or permanent residence at
our kennels.
Statement confirming
whether the trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit
Para 1.18 Trustees have had regard for the Charity
Commission’s public benefit guidance.
This is demonstrated by the support
provided to ensure that healthy dogs are
rehomed and those unsuitable for
rehoming are cared for. The charity
continues to offer advice and support to
the public to increase knowledge of
animal welfare and offer additional
support as required.

Financial Review

Financial Review
Review of the charity’s
financial position at the end
of the period
Para 1.21 Financial position remains viable, and an
independent examiner has reviewed
accounts as our income has risen above
£25k for the first time this year.
Statement explaining the
policy for holding reserves
stating why they are held
Para 1.22 In addition to the general running costs
of the Rescue, the charity endeavours to
have funds to meet larger, unforeseen
veterinary bills for animals in our care
and those being rescued on an ongoing
basis. There is a recognition that larger
kennel facilities will be required in the
future to meet demand and funding for
this requires a build up of reserves as
running costs allow.
Amount of reserves held Para 1.22 £
Reasons for holding zero
reserves
Para 1.22 N/A
Details of fund materially in
deficit
Para 1.24 N/A

The charity’s principal
sources of funds (including
any fundraising)

Para 1.47

Bonds from Greyhound Board
Donations from people adopting dogs.
Donations from the public
Sales of annual calendar
Donations from volunteers & trustees
Investment policy and
objectives including any
social investment policy
adopted
Para 1.46 N/A
A description of the principal
risks facing the charity
Para 1.46 The concerns regarding dogs being
returned to the charity post Covid-19
restrictions proved to be unnecessary.
Proportionately, taking into account the
number of dogs that went out, dogs
being returned was no higher than
normal.
Fewer dogs are being homed than before
and during lock-downs. This could be
due to vast amount of people who
adopted during lock-downs. It could also
be due to the cost of living price rises.
The kennels always run the risk that we
could have an excess of dogs who are
difficult or unsuitable to home to the
public.
