REPORT OF THE INDEPENDENT AUDITORS TO THE MEMBERS OF WESSEX RIVERS TRUST Re3ponsibilitie5 of trustees As explained more fully in the Slalement ol Trustees, Responsibililies. Ihe ITUStees {who are also the directors of Ihe charitable company for the purposes of company law) ale responsible for the preparation of the financial statements and for being sallsfied Ihal they give a true and fair view, and for such inlernal control as the trustees determine is necessary lo enable the preparation of financial statemenls Ihat are free from material misstatement, whether due to fraud or error. In preparing the fsnancial stalemenls, the trustees are responsible for assessing the charilable company's abilily to conlinue 28 2 going concern, disclosing, as applicable. mallers relaled lo gDing concern and using the going concern basis of accounllng unless Ihe Iruslees either intend to liquidate tho charilable company or lo cease operations, or have no realistic allernalive bul lo do so. Our responslbllltlgs for the audit of the flnancial statements Our objectives are lo obtain reasonable assurance about whether the financial slalemenls 85 a whole are free from malérial misslalemenl, whether lo fraud or erior, and to Issue a Report of th6 Independent Auditors Ihal includes our opinlon. Reasonablé assLtrance is a high level of assurance, but is nol a guarantee that an audil conducted in accordance wilh ISAS {UKI will always delect a material misslalomonl when il exists. Missl8lements can arise from fraud or error and are considered material if. individually or in the aggregale, they could reasonably be expected to inlluence the economic decisions of users taken on the basis of Ihese financial slatemenls. Irregularilies, including fraud, are Inslances ol non-compllance wilh laws and regulallons. We design procedures in line with our responslbllilies, outlined above, lo dotecl material misslalemenls in respect of irregularities, including fraud. The exlenl to whlch our procedures are capable of delecling irregularities. includin9 Iraud is delailed below.. As part of our audit planning procedures we identify the significant laws and regulations applicable to the company ba8ed upon our knowledge of the company, the induslry in which it operates and from making enquiries with management. We conslder those laws and regulallons where non-compliance rnay have a malerial effect on Ihe financial statements and thos8 which have a direct impact on lh8 financSal stal8menls. We identified that the most slgnlficanl laws and regulalions applicable during the year were compliance with the requiremen18 of bolh the Companies Act 2006 and with cherily18w and regulations and compliance wilh environmenlal reguialions. Audit procedures performed by the engagemeiit leam in relalion to laws and regulatlons Include making enquirias of management as to any known or svspecled instances of non-complianc&, malntalnlng awareness throughout the course of Ihe audil as lo any Indicatlons ol instances of non-compliance, undertaking a review of cenlral recoTds of accidents and Incldents for Indications of instances of non-compliance, reviewing legal and professional invoices and undertaklng a review of the disclosures in the financial slalements to supporting information and to disclosure checkllsls. We also corssider areas Ih81 are al a higher risk of causing mal8rial fflisstalemenl In th8 financi81 slalemenls due 10 irregularilles, includlng those resulting from fraud and how such ffaud may occur. We discuss wilh senior management the key controls in place lo mitigate the risk of fraud and enquire as to whether Ihey 8re aware of, or suspecl, any fraudulent aclivllles havlng laken place. Throughoul Ihe audil, we maintain an appropriate level of professional sceptscSsm when provlded with Informallon and explanations. We conslder the appropriateness of significant accounting journals that wore processed during the year, assess the reasonableness of any significanl accountlng eslimates and consider whelher there were any indications of bias by management during Ihe year Ihal represents a risk ol maleTial misslalemenl due to fraud, We also carry out analytical procedures lo identify Sny unusual or unexpected varfances lo expeclallons as these may be an indicallon of management over-iide or management bias. Because of the inherent limilations of an audit, there is a rlsk that we wlll not delecl all irr8gularllles, Including those leading to a materlal mlsslalemenl In the financlal slalements or non-compliance with regulalion. This risk Increases Ihe more that compliance with a law OT regulation is removed from the evenls and transactions ieflecled in the financlal slatemenls, as we will be less likely lo become aware of instances of non-compliance. The risk is also grealer regarding Irregularllies occurring due to fraud rather Ihan error, as fraud involves intent￿nal concealment, forgery. colluslon, omission or mlsrepresenlallon. A further description of our responsibililies for Ihe audit of Ihe financial statements is located on Ihe Financial Reporting Council's website at www.frc.org.uklauditorsrespoTrsibililies.
