REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 DECEMBER 2024 Structure, Governance and Management The Parochial Church Council The Parochial Church Council (PCC) is the execulive committee of a Church of England parish.11 consists of clergy and churchwardens of the parish. togelher with represenlalives of the 18lty. The PCC has its origins in the Vestry Committee which looked after church business (both religious and secular) up until 1921. The PCC is legally responsible for the financial affairs of the cl)urch parish amd th8 main18nance of ils assets, .siJch as churches and church halls. 11 also assists the clergy In the managemenl of church affairs in the parish, and promoting the mission of the church. 11 operates accordSng to the Church Represenlallon Rules (20201. 11 is a charitable body and as SLfrch must comply wilh Ihe Charlty Commlssion's regulations. The H&nfi$ld, Sh8rmanbury and Woodmancole PCC is led by the rector of th6 parish (also referred to as the incumbenl), and comprises the churchwardens of oui. three parlsh ¢hur¢hes, our elected represenlalives on the Deanery Synod and up lo nine r8presénlalivés of the laity Members are eleeled to our PCC al our Anniial Parochial Church Meellng {APCMI normally held in May. Every year six ¢hurchwardens12 per church) are elected or re-elected {as is often the casel together with a number of PCC lay represenlalives lo replace those whose three yecir term has fiiiished. Lay represenlalive lo the Deanery Synod are normally eleclod ev&ry three yoars. We currently have 5 deanery represenlallves as delerminod by the iiumber on our eleclor81 roll. During 8 Period of Vacancy The period between incumbents Is known as a period of vac*c1ncy or an interregnum. We were in vacancy between April 24th - Novemb8r 25th. During this lirne muLh of the legal responsibility which would normally lie with the incumbent was passed lo the churchwardens and the rural dean. Our njral dean is Rev'd Rachel Cornish (Priesl in Charge al Alboume, Sayers Common and Twineham Parish). The PCC continued lo operate during the vacancy period and was ably led by Pal Burdock in her ro18 as a churchwdrden of St Peters Henfield, and acting ¢hair. The focus was on day to day buslnes% and Ihe work necessary lo flnd and select a new Incumbent. The PCC would likft lo Ihank all those who picked up nèw or additional responsiblllties durlng the vacancy period whose help enabled the Church lo run smoothly. Plioio (,:, Xejiiieili MLliiiosli The Deanery Synod Our parish belongs lo lh8 rural deanery of Hurst which encompasses over 2Q churches in neighbouring parishes. Tho deanery synod provides an important link with our neighbours, and with our diocese as 8 whole. 11 provides a forum for sharing knowledge, best praclices and resources. Members of the deanery synod also play a role in electing lay and clergy members lo both the diocesan and general synods. The deanery synod met three times in 2024. Th6 meetings move around tho deanary, so one of the advantages of altending is being 8ble to visit various churches. On arrival at the church or hall refreshments are offered before the meeling begins wilh a short lime of worship, oflen Evening Pray8r. There is usually a certain amount of busSness lo gel through, either befor8 or after the speak8r, who might come from any walk of life. At the February meeting, held at Sayers Common, there was a very intarestlng talk about Op6n the 8001( {OtB). This is a storytelling project where Bible slories ar8 shared wlih primary school children in 8 way Ihal is fun, interactive and memorable. OIB provides Irainlng to equip and enable volunteers from churches lo deliver school assemblies. The programme is open to anyone. The May meeting took place here al Sl. Peter's Henfield., the speaker was Colin McFarlin, a Volunteer Senior Waste Prevention Advi50ry for WSCC. He gave a v8ry comprehensive and humorous view of what can and is being recycled in the county, using both power point and physical props (i.e. rubbish!).

These are held in cash and inveslmenls, the income from which was largely used in 2024 to cover the schools 10 /0 contribution lo building projects. These practices ensure that our basic day-lo-day activities in tshurch are safe and that we operate as safely as possible in our inleraclion with both childrcn and adulls. They cover policies pul in place by the PCC, how this supports good $8feguarding drid liow compliance is monilored. Musl policies have a review dale of 1 or 2 years and are revie.wed by the PCC. Ensure all Ihose appointed lo roles with a safeguarding responsibllity have undertaken the relevant Éralnli?g and that thls Is kept up to date. All Ihose required lo undertake, or ranew, their training have fiilher completed this or have befin reminded to do so. We have a written Health and Safety Policy whic.h id?nlilie8 the general and specific arrangenienls Ihal are in place lo ensure, as far as is reasonably praclicable, that our activities arc carried out safely and do not pose a risk to Ilie heallli ()r our employeps, volunteers, con91'egalion, visilors and others who may usc the cliurch, church yard or buildings we are responsible for. These arrangen)enls are in accordance with good practice and relevant slatulory provisions where they apply. In addition tn Ihe Health and Safety Policy, we also have a specifiL policy lor the evacuation of a L'hurch in an emergency. This covers all three of our parish churches. Both policies are reviewed dnnually. They were reviewed in March 2024. The chLirchwardens have day lo day responsibility lor iniplerneiiling these policies, overall responsibility lies wilh Pat Burdock who is our Heallh and Safety Ofticer. However, 811 employees and volurileers have a responsibility to take reasonable care of themselves and nihers while on church business or preinises. and lo comply wilh all safety rules and procedures. Our buildings and grounds are regularly checked to ensure they are safe. All concerns raised during the year are assessed and addressed accordingly.

The PCC has in place a Data Privacy Nolice which explains, among other things, the purposes for whlch personal dala Is h&ld, how 11 is used and how long it is kept. The notice also covers what con8lilules a data breach and what needs to be d(Jne if 8 breach occurs. It Is r8viewed every two years by the PCC. The PCC reviewed the notice in November 2023, 11 will be reviewed agaln In November 2025. The nc)lice includes a section covering the capture of personal images when filming and live streaming services. The Sunday Order of Service booklet advises visitors that their image may be caplured- the side aisles are classified as film free areas in the chijrch. Many members of our congregations have signed a Data Consent form giving us permission to contact them in the course of our business. This greatly facililales communicalion and means that the weekly e-newsleller can be sent out lo a wide number of individuals. Our main objective during the perlod January April was lo prepare for the interregnum and undertake Ihg necessary liandover of tasks and responsibilitles. l?urlng the months of April lo Noveimber the PCC concenlraled on Ih? work required to find a new rector. In December Ihe focus switched lo welcoming our new rector, and support1ng him in his new role. Throughout Ihc year the PCC mel as normal and carrled out Ilie 'buslnes8 as usual, work. In accordance with Ihe church rules for inlerregi)um the PCC kept Ihlngs <?8 they are, with no significant changes being made or major projects being undertaken. Managlng the Interregnum and linding a new Rector Preparing for the interregnum. Much preparatory work was done to ensure the effective and smooth running of the parish during interregnum. Mosl importantly clergy cover for our Sunday services (for the first 6 nionlhsj was arranged. The PCC familiarised ilsplf with the legalities and church rules for the inlp.rregnum per'iod, as well as tho piocess that would need to be followed lo lind and select a new incurnbenl. The main point of il is lo atlract a new pri$st. Undertaking the process to find a new rector. The official timescale for the appointment pr'ocess requlred the PLC to produce the parish profile ideally wilhiii three monlhs, six monll)s al the lat?gt. Work commenced in April, immedialp.ly alter thp licensing of Rev'd Pèul in his new parish. Tlie final document was agreed at the end of JLJIY following a slalutory review meeting with the Ar(:hdeacon, at which point iwo PCC members werp. elected lo ￿ndUct the candidate inlerwews with the Bishop ol Horsham. Tho PCC consulted as widely as pnssible within the parish wheii conipiling Ihe profile. We also asked pupils al St Pelels Church School what they would value In a n8w rector, and sorne of their insightful comments were included. Our thanks go lo all three. Appointing a new priest can lake a long lime. W8 were blessed. Following a vpry good interview the appoinlment of Revd Joe Padfield was confirmed by Bishop Marlin ancl announced on the 29th Seplember. Undertaking Business as usual Worshlp - Providlng the best worship posslble to God wlth the resources we have. range of services continued lo be held each week across Ilie parish providing a real choice for parishioners. The pat16rn of servlcès was largely unaffecled by the vacancy du8 lo good planning and the Clergy support we receiv8d. Rev'd Christina togelhor with a number of vislling clergy provided cover for the cominiinion servicp.s, baptisms and weddings, and visiting lay readers lielped cover Ihe other services of malin8, evensong and Songs of Pr8ise. Most funerals were taken by Rev'd Christina. Duriiig the 9.45£qm Sunday .%ervice al Henli61d, aclivilies for chlldren between 3 and 11 years r?re held in the Noi'lh Iransepl where there is a specially designed ar￿.a for our young ones. Oijr chijrch sidesmen continue lo provide a warm welcome lo everyone. Thi% ha,% been particularly important during the time of vacancy and Ss sornellilrig that can makc a big difference lo both guests and rcgijlar niembers of the Longreqalion. The PCC is grateful for the conllnully provided by Revd Dr Jaiineke Blokland, (Chaplain ¢31 Hurslpierpoinl College) who look both seNices 81 Henfield on two Sundays d iiionlh during the Vacancy. We have been so blossed by her ministry and friendship. We thank her dnd all of the Clergy cjnd Idy ministers wha servod us so well. Mlssion . Growii)g our Ghurch Whilst no new inilicilives havc been implemenled this year we have worked lo maintsin arid strengthen our existing activities Ilial support our aim lo grow the ¢hurch ¢ind encourage families. Flnaijce - Managing finances As a parish we remciin financially viable however we ere running at (1 deficit each month and we are increasingly liavlng lo draw on oiir savings lo supplemenl oiir monthly running costs. The PCC Is looking at ways aiid opportunities lo reduce our expenditure andlor increase our Income. 11 continues lo ensure funds are appropriately allocate.d. All major expeiidilure is discussed by the PCC 2nd needs approval. This year cash flow has been a concern. We have conlinupd lo pay our Parisli Share (approx £6,700 a Inonlhl in fLIII, although the money we receive through regular planned glving does not cover this. In November the PCC volcd not lo increase our Parish Shal'e for 2025 by the sugoesled 40/.. Ideally we need lo find a consislenl m?.an% of increasing our regular income. Some lielpful suggesllons for generating income were raised 818 PCC brainstorming session in Seplen)ber. We also looked at how we. might effectively communicale our financial position lo oiir congregation and Ilie community. 11 was agreed Ilial our new rector should be party to any decisions and wp would wail unlil he was seltled and had familiarised himself with the Parish. The PCC reinains very grateful lo the many member.8 of the congrogation who regularly give lo the chLJrch. and for the legacies and ollier donations that are received throughout the year. The PCC is keen to providg easy and convenient means for donatin9, and thore is relevanl informdlion and links on our servico sheets, in the weekly newsletter and on the website. There is also a donation machine in the Henfield church. Th8 Parish Sliarg is Ihe amounl of mon6y Ihat we Gonlribu18 to Ihe diocese lo support mission and ministry, and specifically io cov8r clgrgy stiijends and Iheir housing.

Attendance at Remembrance Sunday Servlce This year 228 adults and 136 children 811ended thls speclal seNice at St Peter's, Henfield (204 adults and 128 children in 2023). Attendance at Special SeNlces during Advent The village Adv8nl Seryicp. held al St Pelels 14enfleld on the 1st of December, was allended by 63 adults. Prayer and Discipleship Prayer and worship remain al th8 very heart of our church life. St Peterfs Church, Henfield is open every day from 8am to 6pm (or dusk if earlier). It is a place of peace and bancluary, and many visit to reflect, pray, and lighl a candle. Services and Sorvice Pattern The reqular service pallern can be found in full on the church website. Each waek durlng the vacancy there has bp.en a combination of retired or active clergy and lay roaders helping wllh our services and with their help w8 have largely managed lo maintain a normal schedule. In addilion lo our regular services, a number of special servlce.8 were held lo mark the festivals of the Christian Calend8r, in particular: throughout Holy Week and on Good Friday, on Remembrance Sunday, on All Souls Day and during advent. Each day of the Holy Week was marked with a seNic8, including Compline and Reflection, a seNice of T6nebra8 {wilh readings and music) and sung Holy Communion of the Lasl Supper dnd Vigll on Maundy Thursday. On Good Friday there was a worship servSce for all ages in the morning, and a 'Walk ofwilness, with memb8rs from the thre& Henfield churches. Some residents profor lo recoive commLtnion in their rooms and those taking communion lo them are delighted lo do so.111s helpful when a family tells us their relative has moved lo a care home so that good pastoral care can be provided. Through this work good relationships are being built with both staff and residents. Terry's Cross House is 8 care home in Woodmdricole originally for clergy, missionaries and their dependents. Whilst Ihes8 applicants remain a prlorily, the home now also cares for any member of the Church of England and will offer place lo anyone who needs il if a vacancy 8rises. The Henfield Haven - This is a community centre providing activities and specialist seNices as well as a Community cafe. A number of our church congiegalion support and regularly volunteer their services. Two church members help with the monthly Community Luncli which is open to everyone. The Bereavement Support Group meets at The Haven and In doing so, is able to introduce The Haven lo those who may not know of il and the sarvices offered. Henfleld Youth Club - Rev'd Christina, our retired priest, is a Iruslee of the club. Groups and events We have Ihree groups that meet weekly In St Peler's Church, Henfield.. the choir, the hand bell rfngers and the bell ringers.
