BARNET UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE Registered Charity No. 1129309

Annual Report (continued) For the year ended 30 November 2021

Objectives

To advance the education of the public and in particular those not in full-time employment in Barnet and its surrounding locality. The provision of facilities for leisure time and recreational activities with the object of improving the conditions of life for the above persons in the interests of their social welfare.

Finance

In view of the reduced activity due to Coronavirus, subscription rates were reduced temporarily and we planned for deficits to be funded out of existing reserves. These deficits amounted to £8,993 on general fund and £467 on members activities ( 2020 - surpluses of £4,970 and £2,531 respectively ). Details are shown on pages 4 and 5.

Report for the year

Our membership numbered 1,646 at 30th November 2021 ( 1,685 at 30th November 2020 ). We have met our objectives and maintained our membership through a very difficult year. Our activities are on a shared learning basis over a broad spectrum of educational and recreational groups, including crafts, physical activities and social events. Despite the disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, more than half our groups continued to be active using video conferencing facilities. Our monthly meetings with guest speakers have also been maintained in the same way and have attracted substantial attendances.

Future

We intend maintaining all activities undertaken in 2020/21 and hope to increase educational activities, such as workshops, as well as social activities in line with the needs and requirements of the membership. Most groups that were inactive due to Coronavirus have now recommenced and operate within Government health guidelines.

Signed on behalf of the Trustees

BARNET UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE Notes to the accounts for the year ended 30 November 2021

1 Policy on Funds

Surplus funds may arise in the course of normal activities and the committee believes these should be applied for the benefit of all current membership, subject to maintaining appropriate reserves.

During 2019, Barnet U3A introduced the "Beacon" membership system. This is licensed and supported by the Third Age Trust. Previously the membership records were held on a Microsoft database, which was labour intensive and reliant on a small team of volunteers.

4 Activity Funds

These funds represent members' payments in advance to cover anticipated expenditure on group activities. The intention is for each group to break even. Where expenditure is less than the income generated, surpluses may arise. If it is not practical to return to the group members, such surpluses are transferred to the General Fund for the benefit of all u3a members.
