## **Annual Report (continued) For the year ended 30 November 2021**

## **Objectives**

To advance the education of the public and in particular those not in full-time employment in Barnet and its surrounding locality. The provision of facilities for leisure time and recreational activities with the object of improving the conditions of life for the above persons in the interests of their social welfare.

## **Finance**

In view of the reduced activity due to Coronavirus, subscription rates were reduced temporarily and we planned for deficits to be funded out of existing reserves. These deficits amounted to £8,993 on general fund and £467 on members activities ( _2020 - surpluses of £4,970 and £2,531 respectively_ ). Details are shown on pages 4 and 5.

## **Report for the year**

Our membership numbered 1,646 at 30th November 2021 ( _1,685 at 30th November 2020_ ). We have met our objectives and maintained our membership through a very difficult year. Our activities are on a shared learning basis over a broad spectrum of educational and recreational groups, including crafts, physical activities and social events. Despite the disruption caused by the Coronavirus pandemic, more than half our groups continued to be active using video conferencing facilities. Our monthly meetings with guest speakers have also been maintained in the same way and have attracted substantial attendances.

## **Future**

We intend maintaining all activities undertaken in 2020/21 and hope to increase educational activities, such as workshops, as well as social activities in line with the needs and requirements of the membership. Most groups that were inactive due to Coronavirus have now recommenced and operate within Government health guidelines.

Signed on behalf of the Trustees

**INDEPENDENT EXAMINER'S REPORT TO THE TRUSTEES OF BARNET UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE ON ACCOUNTS FOR THE YEAR ENDED 30 NOVEMBER 2021**

I report on the accounts of the Charity for the year ended 30th November 2021 which are set out on pages 4 to 6.

## **Respective Responsibilities of Trustees and Examiner**

The Charity's Trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts and report. The Charity's Trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year {under section 144(2) of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act)}, and that an independent examination is needed. The Charity is preparing accrued accounts and I am qualified to undertake the examination by being a qualified member of The Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales.

It is my responsibility to:

- i Examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act 2011.

- ii To follow the procedures laid down in general directions given by the Charities Commissioners under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

- iii To state whether particular matters have come to my attention

## **Basis of Independent Examiner's Statement**

My examination was carried out in accordance with the general directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the Charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, seeking explanation from the Trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all evidence that would be required in an audit and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a "true and fair view". The report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

## **Independent Examiner's Statement**

- 1 I have completed my examination and confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that, in any material respect:

i[the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the 2011 ]

ii the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or

   - iii the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reporting) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a 'true and fair' view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

- 2 I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.

**BARNET UNIVERSITY OF THE THIRD AGE Notes to the accounts for the year ended 30 November 2021**

## 1 **Policy on Funds**

Surplus funds may arise in the course of normal activities and the committee believes these should be applied for the benefit of all current membership, subject to maintaining appropriate reserves.

- 2 **Membership System**

During 2019, Barnet U3A introduced the "Beacon" membership system. This is licensed and supported by the Third Age Trust. Previously the membership records were held on a Microsoft database, which was labour intensive and reliant on a small team of volunteers.

## **Notes:**

Equipment costing less than £200 is not capitalised.

Substantial items in use, being depreciated on a straight line basis over four years, are shown

## 4 **Activity Funds**

These funds represent members' payments in advance to cover anticipated expenditure on group activities. The intention is for each group to break even. Where expenditure is less than the income generated, surpluses may arise. If it is not practical to return to the group members, such surpluses are transferred to the General Fund for the benefit of all u3a members.
