Leicestershire Victoria County History Tru aims to provide (when funds allow) o volunteer programme which is open to enyone in ticesrshire with an inleresl in th¢ wunty's history. It provides free training in historical research methods, including skills thai the volunteers will be able to use in emplo)Thenl or in other volunlary a¢tiviti¢s. Sections are being published online as reseawh is completed and are published within IkS io provid¢ local people and the public more generally with a definilive and accurnte history of th¢ towns and villages within the county. The Tst works with schools when funds perniil. to provide educational packs lh meei the needs of I1 t¢ach¢rs and the curriculum. and to enthuse and inforni pupils aul the htstory of iheir wmmunities. Lnughborough Since 1750.. A Social and Culiwal Hisiory is on course to be published in Sprin8 2026. The Second paperback will COV th¢ working life of L4)ughtx)rough and its peopl¢ sin¢e 1750, including related iopics such as thc completion of canals and rnilways and th¢ introduction of gas, electricity and clean water. Work is in pro8re5s on ihis with the dale of Publi110 currently uneert&in and dependent un further fundrai5in& which is underway. These two paperbacks will b¢ published by HobNob Pres& a growin8 Ial history publisher based in Glouc¢st¢r who havc impressed us with ihe standard of their other Publi¢10n5. The third ix)ok will be one of the iniC VCH 'big red books. and will be a history of Lou8hiKrou8h and some neighbouring villages from the earliest records to the present day. Some work towards this volume, for example on m¢di¢val Loughborough, ha5 been completed through Splf1¢ grants. but much more work will be r¢quir¢d. During the year we also began and wmpl¢ted a piece of research on the hislory of Nanpantsn. This small village on the southern fringe of Lou8htM)rough 15 grndually be¢omin8 a suburb to th¢ town through rIbn d¢v¢lopment along Forest Road and housing development on fomier Nanpantan rarniland. Nanpanlan'5 htstory was largely unexplored. Almost all th81 was known was thai between 1794 and 1803 coal and minernls from west Lxi¢¢srshire were Iran5ftrred at Nanpantan from bar8es on th¢ Charnwood Forest Canal to wa8on$ on a railroad for the final stage of their jOUTney 10 Loughborough (with some trnvclling on lo tRicester by another canal). We were very grateful to be awarded a 8T( from Chamwood Fore G¢opArL fimded by the National Lottery Heritsg¢ Fund to enable us to recruit a group of Ial volunteers to help us to di8 deeper inio Nanpantsn's past. This was a 4-month project with volunteers lookin8 3t online sources, including histori¢ ¢ensus returns and WspaperS to build a picture of the village. along with inforniation collected from ihc Record Olyice for lxicestershire. L¢iccstcr and Rutland at Wigsion and The National Archives in Kew, west London. We dlscovered that Nanpantan. with no more than a dozen or so house5 in 1883, had by then become a popular destination for days OUL and on a singl¢ sunny summer day could receive many hundreds of visitors s¢¢kinB refreshment. Our project concluded with a public event 8t Nanpantan Hall in March 2025 attended by 100 people. Leicestershire Victoria County History Trust Annual Report of the Directors and Trustees- continued Since the year-end we havc rw¢ivd a second glant from Charnw(thJ Forest Geopark and the National Lottery Heritage Fund for a project to research and wrile a brief historical 'Digest' for twenty places in the CharnwCd Forest Geopark aro outlining their history. These will go online on the Geopark websi. The project 8n in tkcember 2025 and will end in December 2026. W¢ have recruited a professional hiSrian to help us with this work and will recruit volunteers to &ssist with the rescah from February 2026. We remain members of th¢ tAlughlUgh Heritsge Fonun. which meets twicz each ye4r and helps to keep us in touch with Charnwo(Ml Borough Council and or8anisation5 and individuals with an inler¢sl in researching and promoting Loughborough's hisiory and herilage. We attended the annual Heritage Hub event held ai the University of Leicester and also had a stall ai tKi¢¢stershire Archaeological and Historical Society's local history fair, held ai Oakham. During the year we hav¢ deliv¢r¢d tslks about our work to the Friends of Charnwix)d Forest at Woodhouse Eaves in January 2025. to the Rotary Club of Leicester in April an also in April. to Rugby Archaeologi1 So¢iety. Our annual Newsletter issued each Autumn now reh¢S J mailing li of over 250 pwpl¢. with the Autumn 2024 issue including articles on Housing Loughborough's workers iA)ughborough's workhouses and Chartists in Loughborough in 1839. The Autumn 2025 issue feattwes Nanp8ntAffj IA)ughborou8h's charities Charnwo()d Forest enclosure. Fund raising and future pro8pe¢¢• Not all the Trust's application$ 8nd n¢goiiaiions for fimding are sucttssful. but during the year the Trust coniinued to benefit from the Iwuest received by the University of Leicester that was mentiorted in our 2023 Rert. That sourc¢ of income has now iKen exhausi¢d. Grants of £2,500 were receiv¢d during the year from the Leicestershire Archaeological and Hislorical Soci¢ty and the Green Bean Trust. As B re5uli of discussions with th¢ National Foresi and its initiatives in developing ihe herita8e of north-west tkicesrshire. a 8rnnl of £2.998 secured for a volunleer project on the hislory of Nanpantan. li is pleing to report the award of a further grant of £45.000 since the end of the financial year from CharnWO Forest GeopArk, funded by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, to primluce a series of 'Di8¢sts' introducing the hiory of 20 places within the Geopark. The Trust ¢ontinues to receive a steady T¢v¢nu¢ stream from its Friends and 200 Club. FlnAncial Review The financial position of Leicestershire Viclorio County HIOry Trust is set out in the financial statements on pages 9 to 12. Thcs¢ show total incoming resourc¢s of £39.114 and expenditure of £30,700 resulting in a net surplus for the year of £8.414. Th¢ financi81 position is sound. Total net assets at 31 August 2025 re £33.679, which included £7,45 l of restricted funds. A balanc¢ of £24,548 was held in the Trnst's bank accounts. The Directors gnd Trustees consider the financial FM)Sition of the charity to be salisfactory. The activiiies of the charity are carefijlly tailored to match available resources. Budgets a drawn up and moniiored closely and ¢osts kept to a minimum through many hours of donated time given fr¢¢ly by severnl highly skilled [pIe. The Directors and Trustees aim to ensure that the Trust's reserves do ot fall below six month5, anticipated expenditure and believe that this l1¢Y is appropriate and will be m¢1 throughout the next year to 31 * Au8USt 2026, when it will r¢vi¢wed a8ain.
