This is a notable achievement as, sadly, these challenging times mean that so many charities are being forced to close. We offer a safe space with trust and respect at its core. where our members can safely explore. develop and strive to reach their potential. On a visit to Dexters last summer, I was so impressed to see how BIGKID has transformed the Space with welcome 5UPPOrt from the people of Brixton and from the local authority. Building an ecosystem of individuals who are passionate about seeing a child thrive and develop is something that you cannot put a price on. You don't just want your foundation to hold up. you want it to be firm and to have the base for sutcess going forward. BIGKID has done this by creating a positive community of unique individuals. all with their own past experiences. unique upbringings. diverse cultures and varyin8 knowledge, all united by a shared goal - to end youth violence. A shared goal met by exclusive why's captures the dynamic nature of a village. Every individual is for the development of our young people- however, it is our own individual reasons why we do what we do that makes our youth work unique. This is where we find a sense of belonging and purpose, giving us our own rnotivation and drive to each contribute to that shared goal. A Year Around The Worfd BIGKID went global this year! Although our mission is unique to us, it is a global issue that must be addressed. A young person will find it hard to dream if all they see is the same environment that is bringing them down. How can they reach for the stsrs ifthey don't know what the world looks like outside of their home? Here at BIGKID we look to take voung people out of their everyday life and put them in positions that broaden their view of the world, helping them to see what opportunities are out there. This year we were lucky enough to spread our message across the world in different ways, but all leading back to our mission to end youth violence. Starting off in Las Vegas in February to follow Teom Ghana in the Youth Flag Championships at the NFL Pro Bowl, Trinidad & Tobago in June to share our methods and offer advice and solutions to reduce youth violence and increase youth engagement in Trinidad. then South Africa in September nd Ghana in October- both alongside NFL Africa. Enjoying it, She also tried the community session in Larkhall Park. She said although it was scary to join in at first, she was made to feel welcome and enjoyed the vibes. She enjoyed the challenge of the sessions and felt she could have a future playing football. Then the COVID pandemic hit and everything changed. °Covid was o setbock. Ifelt like I didn't grow up. I wos locked inside. I didn't get to experience that period of my lfffe properly. It mode mefeel I wo5n't oble to do certoin things, likefor exomple. excel otft)otboll. I thought ofter COVID. ony chunce I hod in the 5POrt was gone. I'd lost hope ret711y. I startedslacking in my school work.- During lockdowns. Jochebed kept in touch with BIGKID. joining in some of the online se55ions. Staff would check in with her and her family regularly. delivering food boxes and other support where needed. Coming out of lockdown restriction5, Jochebed started coming back to BIGKID. As well as getting back to sport and joining youth club. she benefitted from 1=1 session5. initially with coach Jonathan. then later with Paris when he started as Health & well.being Practitioner. "BIGKID definitely helpedme through that time. 8eing amund people aguin wus good. [1 reolised] you hove to take it one step at a time. thot this period will olwoys come to on end and o new beginning will come up. BIGKID definitely helped me with that." Over the last couple of year5 Jochebed has become more involved with BIGKID'S Flag programme. qualifying as a sessional coach and referee. helping deliver our schools programme and taking part in community events for the NFL Foundation. She even had the chance to travel to Las Vegas for NFL Flag ProBowl and ha5 been seleded forTeam GB Women's Flag and Contact teams. Sailing During the last week of May, we took a group of IS young people to our annual sailing residential. hosted by the Aldeburgh Yacht Club in Suffolk. A few days packed with fun artivities. challenges that got our young people out of their comfort zone and. for many, facing their fear ofwater. With amazing expert guidance from Ayc's instructors, our young people walked away having leamt new skills on the water and in life. All the new friendships, skills learned and fears conquered would not have been possible if not for Aldeburgh Yacht Club. it5 members. staff and volunteers. On behalf of all of us at BIGKID V thank you all for your incredible ongoing supportl -Soillng ollowed me to creote newfriends and leorn more obout them, as well a5 identifying Omari 05 one of my role models in BIGKID-" R05hard Dexters 2023 Saw almost 600 young people attend community sessions at Dexters. including youth club. gardenin& SEND and adventure play. A further estimated l.SOO community members of all ages came to free events including Jurnpstart January. Windrush Community Day. Festive Fete as well as private hire for birthday parties and community groups. This is a huge increase on previous years. emphasising Dexters, importance as a community hub. A particular highlight of the year was our Summer Reception on 26th July, which launched our 15th-anniversary celebrations. Attended by over 250 partners, donor5, SUPPOrters. local community members and young people both past and present. it Was an incredible occasion. Special thanks to our Patron. Sir Ken Olisa and the Mayor of Lambeth for their presence and words of support. To round offwhatwas a remarkable year. we hosted our annual Festive Fete on 15th December. Santa sure had his hands full as the night itself was a huge success. Quickly falling in love with the sport, although it was his f irst time playin& Omari became a regular and immediately felt at home. "I remember myfirst session like it wos yesterdoy. The vibes. the people. thefeeling thot no matter the number of participonts you were caredfor. w05 unmotched. I wos olways noturolly o quiet child. who hod an abundonce of energy andpersonolity but wa5 relurtant to share it. a5 1 neverfelt ot home outside of my own home. Well. 81GKID 15 where Ifound that sense of belonging." Omari has had a tough home life. which has seen him mature far beyond his years. Although he is the third child out of four. Omari has always had to step up and hold thin25 together whenever his Mum isn't well. Suffering with fibromyalgia and chronic arthritis amongst other health issues. his Mum 15 constantly in and out of hospital for surgical procedures. His constant heroics at home have seen him become a pivotsl figure. where he is now admired by his siblings- but that has also come at a prite. -I'm a big Star War5fon ond have olwoys seen Anokin Skywolker os o hero, but not even George Lucos can replicate my real hero. My Mum. It isn't easy to con5tontly See my mum in puin ond get on with my day, but I still do. Although I'm not the oldest I've hod to step up beyond my years to hold thefort at home. thi5 has meant thot I constantlyfeel os though I've missed out on my childhood. opportunities ondju5t life in generol. During lockdown he hosted daily 45-minute workouts via our Instagram live. which both directly and indirectly impacted the lives of countless people across not just his communitv but to several corners of the world. Taken his talents in American Football and been a part ofTeam G8 U19 contact. the NFL Academy. captained our U17 flag team to finals. captained South London Renegades U19 Contact team and now has his eyes set on Team GB'5 Adult Flag team. Throughout this Omari has also become a qualified sessional coach and referee, has helped to deliver our schoo15 programme, has become a copywriter and is ow a part of our media department. doing great things. Rise Above The Challenge 2023 was the year to rise above challenges for BIGKID. Starting off with Thierri tackling a monumental challenge in the London Marathon. Coming from a footballing background Thierri definitely had fitness but we can all agree Marathon fitness is a different league. Both Thierri and Tom had the whole of BIGKID behind them cheeringthem on as theywere able to smash the event and help fundraise almost £1.5001 October saw a new challenge on the horizon. The Royal Parks Half. Deeply inspired by Thierri. Omari took on this challenge. With no Marathon experience at all, like Thierri, Omari wasn't letting anything stop him from getting to the finish line. An extra dose of motivation from Thierri pulled Omari across the line as he was fighting cramps on the home stretch. Seeing our young people put themselves forward to take on challenges to help give back to BIGKID is very moving. it's a testament to the work we put in and their resilience to do events like these is a token of their appreciation. That wasn't all l Our Head of Development. Kathy Silenga, tackled the 2-rnile open water Swim Serpentine challenge on 16th September. our HR & Facilities Coordinator. Unika Cumberbatch-wynter. endured a Erueling 6 hour walk of the Victoria line all the way from Walhamstow to Bflxton and Marina Sa, one of our Programme officers. and a team of f riends took on a sk inflatable obstacle course- their amazing combined efforts helped raise almost £5,0(M)! Flag Football During 2023 almost 5LIJ young people engaged in school and community Flag sessions. over half of these were new to the sport. Including events. this equates to over 5.CKJO hours played I 2023 was the year where we asked our partners from across London to notjust talk the talk but walk the walk. Kicking off our inaugural CityBowl at Selhur5t Park on a hot summerfs day. everyone was readyto go. including a team from the NFL UK office. The day started off with some words from Jonathan about the rules and how it was all going to run. Then the royal rumble began. with high hopes for the NFL to take it. especially with two GB players on their squad. The competition was fierce and mighty but not just to our surprise, everyone was shocked with Latham & Watkins walked away with the winningtrophyl Who will be there to challenge them in 2024?? Ouring the summer our amazing ambassador Efe Obada continued to give back to the community and inspire more young people with a high profile event held in Crystal Palace at the venue for our caEe league. The event was filled with manyguests which included the Mayor of London's office, Troy Deeney. yet another ambassador, Phoebe Schecter, and the biggest star of the day, Big John - one of our very own beneficiaries turned high profile influencerl With the NFL in town for their International Series in Ortober. we flocked to Tottenham stadium to run an exclusNe event for celebrities and influencers. all of them new to playing American football. Luckily for them, they had our amazing young people there to coach them. For our young coaches to have the opportunity to coach some of their favorite Social media influencers is an experience none of them took for granted. Breaklng 8arrlers 2023 was a great year for our highly acclaimed Breaking Barriers Programme. This year saw us work with 175 young people in 9 schools across four different boroughs. We were consistently impressed by the p051tive impact of the programme on young people's attitudes, levels of engagement. progress and development of incredible leadership qualities. Over 90% completed the programme and re*ngaEe wrth learning. 79% improved seW-e5teem 69% improved abilÈty to self-reflert 62% improved behaviour outside of schoollat home "My behoviour hos improved over the postfew weeks because of this progromme.
