2. Structure, governance and management

Fanconi Hope is governed by its constitution, adopted on 24 November 2008. The charity operates under the oversight of its Board of Trustees, all of whom serve on a voluntary basis.

Trustees are appointed in accordance with the governing document and bring relevant skills and experience from the medical, scientific, and patient-support communities. The trustees meet annually to oversee the charity’s work, finances, and strategic direction.

The charity works collaboratively with the Aplastic Anaemia Trust and the National Lotteryfunded Better Together for Healthy Bone Marrow Project, as well as other rare disease organisations, clinicians, and patient families to ensure a consistent and supportive approach across the UK.

3. Charitable purposes

The charity’s purposes, as set out in its governing document, are:

To support a UK Fanconi Anaemia National Registry so as to ensure Fanconi Anaemia affected children and their families are kept track of and provided with the best care.
To promote awareness and understanding of Fanconi Anaemia among affected families, the medical profession and the general public.
To encourage translational research that might directly benefit Fanconi Anaemia related children and their families.
To encourage research in the area of Fanconi Anaemia that might have benefit for the general public e.g. in the treatment of cancers in general.

4. Objectives and activities

During this reporting year, the trustees focused on establishing the charity’s operational base in Scotland and continuing the wider UK activities coordinated through Fanconi Hope.

Main activities:

Providing information, advice, and emotional support to families affected by Fanconi Anaemia.
Promoting awareness of the condition among healthcare professionals and the public.
Supporting and disseminating research findings to improve diagnosis and treatment.
Collaborating with UK and international partners to strengthen the Fanconi Anaemia community.
Engaging in fundraising and awareness events to sustain the charity’s work.

Achievements:

Registered Fanconi Hope Scotland as a recognised Scottish charity.
Expanded communication channels for families in Scotland and the North of England.
Contributed to Fanconi Hope UK’s research support and awareness programmes.
Organised online information sessions and outreach to newly diagnosed families.
Developed plans for a 2025 family support day.
Developed closer links with similar organisations across Europe

5. Public benefit statement

In planning and carrying out the charity’s activities, the trustees have had due regard to the guidance on public benefit issued by both the Office of the Scottish Charity Regulator (OSCR) and the Charity Commission for England and Wales.

Fanconi Hope provides clear public benefit by:

Offering free access to reliable, evidence-based information and peer support.
Enabling families to connect with others affected by Fanconi Anaemia.
Funding and promoting medical research aimed at improving outcomes.
Raising awareness among clinicians and the general public to encourage early diagnosis.

All activities are open to anyone affected by Fanconi Anaemia, regardless of location, background, or means.

6. Financial review

For the period 1 May 2024 to 30 April 2025:

Income was derived primarily from individual donations, online fundraising, and grants. During 2024 the Charity enlisted the support of Constellation Fundraising to assist with obtaining Trusts & grants, to assist with improving and enhancing the website and to also assist with other marketing and governance documentation.

Expenditure focused on awareness materials, support resources, and administrative costs.

Reserves of £15,000 have been retained to support ongoing activities and provide a buffer against funding fluctuations.

I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 30/04/2025 Responsibilities and As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the basis of report accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”).

I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act.

Independent I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have
examiner's statement come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect:
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.

I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
