LD reported that the boys who had just left halls from uni are currently renting – money given to them for furnishing etc was given from the future fund as part of the agreed package following education.
The charity accounts look healthy but we are aware prices are rising significantly in many areas including food e.g. 50 – 60%. Salaries have not risen but we are now paying tax and national insurance for those employed.
When the accounts are received from Kenya on a monthly basis, LD will send them out to UK Trustees for information.
Andrew has been buying in bulk when items are cheaper and then stores them. This saves money in the long run.
Now Lydia is gone, LD has set up a spreadsheet/chart for those who are employed on sites for completion regarding hours, leave and absence etc. This will be sent to Meru for completion when Andrew agrees. Andrew will send through completed information to LD every month.

Fundraising.
The Race Night was a success raising around £1200 and again this is booked for October 21[st] 2023.
Once again the Golf day last year was a success and has take place again this year already. In fact this year it was over subscribed but the Hotel, London Beach Hotel and Spa at Tenterden, where it is held have honoured all the payments and will send £1120 back in the next month. This is very generous of the Hotel for which we are very grateful. Everyone enjoyed it and are looking forward to next year.
We are also holding an afternoon tea at the Hotel on 18[th] November and tickets are available. A raffle will also take place and the Hotel will refund the cost of all the tickets.
We have visited various Scout Groups throughout Kent, Sussex and even Oxfordshire. All these happened following the Kent Jamboree last summer at the Detling Showground where we did activities and had the “shop” raising about £5000.
We have prepared a poster for Camp for Kenya which is to be distributed to as many groups as possible.
John Savill is taking part in a sponsored event to climb Kilimanjaro. LD offered to support with promotion for fund-raising and sponsorship including details on the charity newsletter. – monies raised will be split between H4K and Chaddy Mission.
Curtis Mansfield visited Kenya in September last year. He raised funds for all the painting in Meru last year by completing 5 Iron Man events. This year he has run a number of marathons and will be completing further Iron Man events and he will be splitting monies raised for H4K and another charity. He will also be running one of the London Marathons.
Phil Suter – asked for an estimate of the total cost of the new workshop planned at Meru for carpentry training. Phil has a contact who has expressed an interest in supporting the charity and may be willing to make a donation towards the cost of the building project.
Phil’s Son-In-Law was also responsible for sourcing 4 crates and a suitcase of tools which has been kindly donated and is currently on its way to Kenya.
Jennie Bailey (supporter), is happy to help the charity with fund-raising, educational and well-being support. Jennie has been previously successful in winning bids and is willing to help the charity with any future potential projects to raise funds.
EDFRI International. This is a charity founded by Edward and Frida in Kenya and it has been agreed that H4K NGO should link with them as they are willing to work to support the Meru project and especially on the carpentry project. Edward has close government links, is respected by all churches and currently supports the poor in Kenya. They will work as a partnership with the NGO and drive community projects and support on our behalf. They will work closely with John Buria (Kenya NGO Chairman).
The meeting was closed at 20:20
NOTE – after the meeting
Lesley and Roger had confirmation this week that £6,000 will be donated to the charity for the Meru carpentary project.
Chairman’s Report
This year has been a challenging one for Harambee for Kenya, and it has been a year of change, both here and in Kenya.
We have said goodbye to Trustees and welcomed new ones. Roger also stepped down as Chairman in April 2024. I want to take the opportunity to say thank you to Roger for all he has done as Chairman; without him and his vision some 20 years ago, this charity wouldn’t exist, and wouldn’t be providing much needed funds and support to our partners in Kenya, and we wouldn’t be providing children in Kenya with a home and opportunities for a better future. Roger leaves behind an extraordinary legacy and I am delighted that he will be continuing to provide his wisdom and insights as a Trustee. I have since taken on the role of Chairman in an interim capacity.
This year we have engaged with the Charity Commission and have worked with them to develop a robust action plan to develop new policies and practices, both at home and in Kenya. We have developed a reserves policy, global safeguarding policy, and reviewed our practices in relation to recruitment of Trustees. Alongside this we have worked closely with the team in Kenya to bring records up to date and improve the administration of the NGO to give the UK charity confidence and assurance that funds are well spent, and properly accounted for. This has been a time-consuming exercise, but ultimately has allowed Trustees to examine the effectiveness of our governance and oversight and create a more accountable and auditable approach to how we operate the Charity.
During the year, we have also reviewed our safeguarding practices and the support we are providing in Kenya. This has led to the NGO employing additional staff in both safe houses, who are qualified social workers, along with additional house parents to ensure that the children have adequate access to qualified professionals and robust supervision while they are with us. Naturally, this has led to higher costs for the Charity, and as a result Trustees have a need to focus on fundraising to support this additional, ongoing, but necessary, staffing commitment in Kenya.
Trustees have made regular visits to Kenya over the year; we had visits in October, February and March. In February, we conducted a surprise visit to the projects to ensure that both projects were operating as expected. It was very pleasing that they were. In March, a group of Scouts from Kent also visited the project in Kisii.
The NGO continues to operate well, with Roger, Lesley and I continuing in our roles as Directors of the NGO in partnership with the Kenyans, and they held their AGM in March, at which time they elected Jimmy Gathua as Executive Director and me as Vice-Chairman. These appointments ensure that the NGO continues to develop and strengthens the partnership between Kenya and the UK.
We have big plans for the year ahead, and our focus is three-fold. We will be looking closely at our funding model and income streams with an aim to ensure a sustainable financial model for the future. We will be reviewing our branding, external
collateral, and online social media presence, to ensure that we are building awareness in the UK of our work in Kenya and supporting our future financial model. We will also be further reviewing our broader operating model to create sustainability in how we deliver activity both in the UK and in Kenya so that we remove single points of failure in our structure and over-reliance on one or two individuals to deliver multiple roles.
Tom Nixon,
Chairman of Trustees
Message from the outgoing Chairman
As three of us stood in the sports stadium in Kisii giving out Scout Uniforms to the extension Scouts, who were all street boys, hearing all the churches blazing out their music and messages, I knew then that we were being called to do something. That was in 2005. I’m glad that we didn’t realise then the journey we would go through, both testing and encouraging times. Had I known at the time where it was going to lead, we may never have started it.
Most of you are aware of the trials we have gone through, and we would have never achieved this unless we, our team of trustees and helpers, had persevered. To see what we have achieved is a testimony to all who have been involved and supported us and it is with great joy we see how many boys have progressed from their humble beginnings. To see what most of these boys have been through and how far they have come will remain in my memory forever.
I know my limitations which are particularly with the use of computers and other secretarial duties, and I think my role was to ensure buildings were built and the main structure of the charity was in place both here and in Kenya. It is time now to step more into the 21[st] Century with modern things like using different media platforms available to us and it is therefore time to move over and let the younger generation take it forward.
I know that I am leaving the Chairmanship in capable hands and look forward to being a regular trustee in supporting the new Chairman in his role. I would like to thank all of you for your help and assistance and long may the Charity continue to give ex Street boys a chance to become valued members of society, which has always been our aim.
Roger Dann, former Chairman of Truistees
Message from the Chairman of the Kenyan NGO
Good morning great friends. We thank God so far for his love and goodness to all of us. May I take this opportunity to thank you all for your continued support. You’ve really changed the lives of these boys, who once thought no one would come to their help.
The year had challenges though, but all through we've witnessed the goodness of the Lord, our home is safe, the boys are growing, and enjoying their home. Not much complaining although some are sometimes naughty but at school are doing well. College is the same. This year and we have 3 new staff members. which is very good. We now have 2 Social Workers, and a carpenter who is training the boys as well as at the same time doing a little business of making furniture for customers. The profit of this is an income for the Charity. Soon I see us have a great furniture shop and much of our needs are well met as he can make things for the homes.
Thank you to the team that visited early this year. We are happy!
Finally, please continue praying for this Nation. Kenya is really experiencing very serious demonstrations of every week which is putting almost everything at a standstill. The young generation now is doing unbelievable things, most of the businesses are almost closing. Thank you Lesley, for guiding us to doing things correctly most of the time. Congratulations to Tom Nixon for the new task. I know you will make it, and all the other Trustees, thanks for the good work.
Just like the Bible says no work that is done to help the needy will pass unnoticed.
Blessed time all.

Respective responsibilities of trustees and examiner
The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The charity’s trustees consider that an audit is not required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.
It is my responsibility to:
-
examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act,
-
to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and
-

Basis of independent
examiner’s statement
My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the Charity Commission. An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters. The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a ‘true and fair’ view and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.
-
Independent examiner's In connection with my examination, no matter has come to my attention statement 1. which gives me reasonable cause to believe that in, any material respect, the requirements:
-
to keep accounting records in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; and
-
to prepare accounts which accord with the accounting records and comply with the accounting requirements of the Charities Act
-
have not been met; or
-
-
