Thetrusteeswhoarealsodirectorsof thecharityforthepurposesof theCompaniesAct2006,present their
reportwiththefinancialstatementsofthecharityfortheyearended31December2024.Thetrustees have
adoptedtheprovisionsofAccountingandReportingbyCharities:StatementofRecommended Practice
applicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccountsinaccordancewiththeFinancialReporting Standard
applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) (effective 1 January 2019).
OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Purposes and Aims
The Society'spurpose,as set out in the objectin the charitablecompany'smemorandumof association,is the
advancement of neurosurgery for the public benefit and the benefit of the community generally.
Society'spurposeisthestudyandadvancementofneurosurgery.TheSocietyaimstoadvance expertise,
knowledgeand trainingamongsurgeons,othermedicalpractitionersand all professionalsallied or concerned
with general public health generally having a qualification recognised by the National Health Service.
The Society thereby aims to relieve the sickness of persons suffering from surgical neurological disorders.
TheSocietypromotestheconductofresearch,tuition,mentoring,adviceandassistancegenerallyfor the
relief of sickness of persons suffering from neurological disorders.
The Societypromoteseducationand disseminationof knowledgeamongstthe communityby associating with
voluntary and other organisations and individuals with particular skills.
Fundingresources:Thesociety'sprincipalregularsourceofincomeisthesubscriptionfromits members.
Voluntarygiftsanddonationsincomearereceivedoccasionally.Hospitaltrustssupportthe National
NeurosurgeryAuditProgram.Fundsarecollectedbythecharityanddisbursedfromit.SBNSholds both
restricted and unrestricted funds, as mentioned below.

OBJECTIVES AND ACTIVITIES
Significant activities
Bursaries:
TheSBNSBursarieshavebeenenhancedinconjunctionwiththesupportofthesistercharity 'The
NeurosurgicalFoundation.'A budget of £30K has been ring-fencedto supportUK and IRE based neurosurgical
trainees.Thedisbursementofthebursaryiscompetitiveandthroughapplication.TheNepal 'Devkota'
bursaries will be administered through the Global Neurosurgery Initiative.
SBNS Mentorship
TheSBNScouncilworkedtodevelopa peer-to-peermentorshipprogram.It remainsoperational.Thisis free
to members.
SBNS Helpline
TheSBNSoffer'members-inneed'aphonehelpservicetopromotementalhealthandwell-beingat the
workplace. This service is free to members.
SBNS Global Initiative
TheSBNSGlobalInitiative,withTheDianaandAlanKarterFund,hasdevelopedinternationalbursaries to
sponsorneurosurgeonsfromLowandMiddleIncomeCountriestovisittheUKandsupportlocaltrainees to
visit LMIC countries to gain experience.
SBNS supported ST6 National Simulation Training Camp
SpecialistTrainingyear6simulationtrainingon(whitefibre)dissectionofthebrainandstudyof relevant
anatomy took place in April 2025. The funds for this was budgeted through 24-25.

Achievement and performance
Charitable activities
TheSocietyofBritishNeurologicalSurgeonsundertakesawiderangeofactivitiesthataffect the
neurosurgicalcommunityin general.The SBNS is involvedin research,standardsand deliveryof neurosurgery
carein theGB& IRE.TheSBNScharityis focusedonthewell-beingofitsmembers,equality& diversity, and
promotes a workplace free from bullying, with empowerment and equality in opportunity.'
TheSociety'sconstitutionhasbeenupdatedduringtheAnnualGeneralMeetingSeptember2024 in
Birmingham.
Membership Activities:
The SBNS council meeting and executive committee meetings.
Fourmeetingswereheldthroughouttheyeartoformulate,reviewanddiscusspoliciesforneurosurgery in
the United Kingdom,the implicationsof governmentpolicyproposals,issues aroundtrainingand the financial
position of the society.
TheSBNSsubcommitteesdeliberatedonthetopicsofResearch,NationalAudit,GlobalNeurosurgery and
neurosurgical trainee matters.
TheSBNSconferenceswereheldinEdinburgh(Spring2024),Birmingham(Autumn2024)andBelfastin the
Springof2025.TheSBNSmembersandotherdelegatesattendedthesescientificconferencesto exchange
knowledgeoncurrentneurosurgicalpractice.TheSBNSAGMwasheldduringtheautumnmeeting.The Sri
Lanka society joined SBNS meeting as well as guests from the United States during the year.
The SBNS held an away day council meeting in Preston 25/26th April.
The SBNS councildiscussedthe role of physician'sassociatein surgicalhealth care, sexualharassmentat work
place,participatedintheRCSworkforcecensusandconsideredthepossibilityofjoining parliamentary
advisory council for transport safety.
TheSBNShasrepresentativesinJCIE,JCST,SAC,CRGandvariousotherorganisationwherewearea stake
holder.
SBNS Equality and Diversity
The Equalityand Diversitygroup exploredpracticesin the workspaceand within the charity.The findings have
beendisseminated.The EDIreporthas nowbeensubmittedto the RCS and placedon the SBNSwebsite. The
reportwassharedwiththemembersduringtheSBNSconference.Focusgroupsarenowlookingat dropout
rates for training via the FSSA and the demographics.
National Neurosurgical Audit Programme
TheNationalNeurosurgicalAuditProgrammeproducedareportonunit-levelperformance.These reports
weresharedwithrespectivetrusts.NNAPhassecuredtheservicesofanewdataprovideranda more
engagingreportis expectedfor2025.Fundsaresecuredfortheservicesofthenewproviderwithhelp from
Neurosurgery Specialist Network.

Clinical Pathways/Guidelines
TheSBNScouncildeliberatedonvariousclinicalpathwaysduringtheyear.Thefollowingareof special
mention.
PerioperativeManagementof Anticoagulationand Antiplateletsin Spinaland CranialNeurosurgery: Progress
was made and the final guidance is ready for sharing /publication
NICE(SubarachnoidHaemorrhageGuidelines):SBNSNICErepresentativehighlightedtheriskof missing
patientswithlifethreateningSAHandSBNShaswrittentoNHStrustssharingouruneasinessaboutthe part
of the NICE guideline.
LowVolumeHighComplexitySurgery:TheSBNScouncildeliberatedonthistopicandSBNSpresident has
been in communication with David Cummings
The SBNS Archivist
The society appointed two members as Archivist in preparation for SBNS100
The SBNS 100 Preparation
Thesocietywillbecelebrating100yearsin2026.Thiswillnotonlybeayearofcelebrationbut also
reaffirming our contribution to the patients, profession and to the world neurosurgical community.
The SBNS and WFNS (The World Federation of Neurosurgical Societies)
TheWFNSis currentlyhavinga disputewiththeSpanishsocietyregardingvenueoftheworldcongress. The
SBNS has suspended WFNS membership while the dispute is being discussed in the court of law.
The SBNS Website
TheSBNShasanewwebsite.Itallowsbettervisibilityofourcharitableandeducationalfunctionsaswell as
providing a more interactive experience for our members.
Financial review
Principal funding sources
TheSociety'sprincipalregularsourceoffundsis thesubscriptionincomefromitsmembers.Other voluntary
giftanddonationincomeis receivedfrombothprivateandcommercialdonors.TheNNAPis now supported
by hospital trusts, donations from which are collected by the charity and disbursed from it.
Investment policy and objectives
TheSocietyhasadoptedareserveandinvestmentpolicy.SBNSwillpursueanethicalinvestment policy
commensurate with its founding principle. The investment policy is attached.
INVESTMENT 2025
SBNShasinvested£650000incashreserve(FD)withLloydsBank.Theinterestearnedisplannedto expand
SBNS charitable activities, benefitting the membership
SBNShasinvesteda restricteddonation- 'TheDianaandAlanKarterFund'withAFHwealthmanagement as
an SBNS Global Neurosurgery fund for charitable activities related to neurosciences in LMIC countries.

Reserves policy

STRUCTURE, GOVERNANCE AND MANAGEMENT
Governing document
The Societyis a charitablecompanylimitedby guaranteeas defined by the CompaniesAct 2006, incorporated
on18July2006andregisteredasacharityon31May2007.ItsMemorandumestablishedthe Society's
objects and powers and is governed under its Articles of Association.
Recruitment and appointment of new trustees
Forcharitylaw,theSociety'strusteesarethedirectorsofthecharitablecompanywhoarethe elected
Officersof theSociety,exceptfortheSecretaries.All officersarenominatedfromamongand electedby Full
Members of the Society and serve in office for two years
Organisational structure
TheSocietyhasa CouncilofManagementofelectedOfficers(whowiththeexceptionoftheSecretaries are
alsothe directorsof the companyand for purposesof charitylaw are the trusteesof the charity),ten elected
membersappointedby nominationand election,five membersex-officioas appointedby the relevant bodies
approved by the Council from time to time, and one lay member appointed by invitation.
The Directorsare responsiblefor the managementof the businessof the Society.The Councilmeets regularly
to develop and review the Society's strategic direction and policy.
Wider network
InfurtheranceofitscharitableobjecttheSocietyhasdevelopedandmaintainsrelationshipswith other
bodiesengagedintheadvancementofexpertise,knowledgeandunderstandingofneurosurgeryby the
promotionandstudyofneurosurgery.TheWFNS,EANS,UEMS,BNTA,SACinNeurosurgery,and the
IntercollegiateExaminationBoardareallrepresentedontheCounciloftheSocietybyex-officio members.
The Societyis affiliatedto the WFNS,EANS,and UEMS,and throughits ProfessionalDevelopment, Standards
&EducationCommitteeislinkedwithotherorganisationsinvolvedintheadvancementof education,
knowledge and training of medical and allied professionals.

1. CURRENCY
The Functional currency is Great British Pounds
2. ACCOUNTING POLICIES
Basis of preparing the financial statements
Thefinancialstatementsofthecharitablecompany,whichisapublicbenefitentityunderFRS 102,
havebeenpreparedinaccordancewiththeCharitiesSORP(FRS102)'AccountingandReporting by
Charities:StatementofRecommendedPracticeapplicabletocharitiespreparingtheiraccounts in
accordancewiththeFinancialReportingStandardapplicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland (FRS
102)(effective1January2019)',FinancialReportingStandard102'TheFinancialReporting Standard
applicableintheUKandRepublicofIreland'andtheCompaniesAct2006.Thefinancial statements
have been preparedunder the historicalcostconvention,with the exceptionof investmentswhich are
included at market value, as modified by the revaluation of certain assets.
Income
All incomeis recognisedin the Statementof FinancialActivitiesonce the charityhas entitlementto the
funds, it is probable that the income will be received and the amount can be measured reliably.
Expenditure
Liabilitiesarerecognisedasexpenditureassoonasthereisalegalorconstructive obligation
committingthecharitytothatexpenditure,itisprobablethatatransferofeconomicbenefitswill be
requiredinsettlementandtheamountoftheobligationcanbemeasuredreliably.Expenditure is
accountedforonanaccrualsbasisandhasbeenclassifiedunderheadingsthataggregateall cost
relatedtothecategory.Wherecostscannotbedirectlyattributedtoparticularheadingsthey have
been allocated to activities on a basis consistent with the use of resources.
Grantsofferedsubjecttoconditionswhichhavenotbeenmetattheyearenddatearenotedas a
commitment but not accrued as expenditure.
Allocation and apportionment of costs
CostsareallocatedbetweencategoriesofexpenditureoftheStatementofFinancial Activities
reflectingtheapplicationoftheresources.Costsrelatingtoa particularactivityareallocated directly,
others are apportioned on bases appropriate or on estimated usage.

Taxation
The Society is a registered charity and as such is exempt from taxation on its charitable activities.
Financial instruments
TheCompanyonlyentersbasicfinancialinstrumenttransactionsthatresultintherecognition of
financialassetsandliabilitiesliketradeandotherdebtorsandcreditors,loansfrombanksand other
third parties, and investments in ordinary shares.
Financialassetsthataremeasuredatcostandamortizedcostareassessedattheendoof each
reportingperiod for objectiveevidenceof impairment.If objectiveevidenceof impairmentis found, an
impairment loss is recognised in the Profit and Loss Account.
Financialassetsand liabilitiesare offsetand the net amountreportedin the BalanceSheet when there
isanenforceablerighttosetofftherecognisedamountsandthereisanintentiontosettleona net
basis or to realise the asset and settle the liability simultaneously.
