Objectives and Activities
| SORP reference | ||
|---|---|---|
| Summary of the purposes of the charity as set out in its governing document |
Para 1.17 | The object of the charity is to advance the education of pupils in Gillespie Primary School in particular by: ● Developing effective relationships between the staff, parents and others associated with the school. ● Engaging in activities or providing facilities or equipment which supports the school and advances the education of the pupils. |
| Summary of the main activities in relation to those purposes for the public benefit, in particular, the activities, projects or services identified in the accounts. |
Para 1.17 and 1.19 |
In this school year which continued to be dominated by covid, the main benefits funded by Friends of Gillespie PTA (FoG) comprised: ● Laptops for staff to enable them to work at home ● A number of in-school workshops (History Off the Page) ● Funding for a string instrument tutor. ● Forest School for Reception and Year 1 ● Equipment to enable recording of school events to support covid-safe practices. FoG fundraising efforts were limited due to covid restrictions which curtailed the opportunities to foster the school community and bring a range of parents, teachers and children together. |
| Statement confirming whether the trustees have had regard to the guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit |
Para 1.18 | Yes, the trustees have had regard to this guidance. |

Achievements and Performance
| Summary of the main achievements of the charity, identifying the difference the charity’s work has made to the circumstances of its beneficiaries and any wider benefits to society as a whole. |
SORP reference Para 1.20 |
The main achievements of FoG are: 1. Bringing parents, teachers and pupils together across a range of events over the academic year. This supports our objective of developing these relationships. Covid restrictions made it difficult in 2020-21 to achieve this objective except on a limited scale. 2. Funding a range of extracurricular activities, equipment and learning materials that the school (and/or some parents) could not afford themselves. This helps foster an inclusive environment for all pupils as well as broadening the range of learning opportunities. Specific examples funded in 2020/21 are listed in the “main activities” section above. Of note is that FoG were in a position to be able to fund additional equipment that supported remote learningand covid safepractices. |

|---|---|---|---|---|
| The covid pandemic had an impact both on | ||||
| the ability to run events due to restrictions, | ||||
| Achievements against | Para 1.41 | plus trustee capacity at a difficult time for | ||
| objectives set | everyone. This resulted in FoG not being | |||
| able to run the usual set of fundraising and | ||||
| community fostering events through the year. | ||||
| Despite that, the level of individual donations | ||||
| from parents increased to make-up much of | ||||
| the expected revenue shortfalls. This | ||||
| enabled FoG to continue to fund an albeit | ||||
| reduced set of extracurricular activities and | ||||
| was also able to fund emergency needs that | ||||
| arose due to covid. | ||||
| The mix of fundraising was different to | ||||
| previous years, because, due to covid | ||||
| Performance of fundraising | restrictions and trustee capacity fewer | |||
| activities against objectives | Para 1.41 | fundraising events took place. This was | ||
| set | compensated for by an increase in | |||
| donations. This included a number of small | ||||
| and regular parental donations plus a single | ||||
| large donation of £20,000. | ||||
| Setting the large donation aside, the year | ||||
| would have been a negative for net cash by | ||||
| around £5000. The trustees at the time took | ||||
| this decision due to the cash reserves held | ||||
| and the extraordinary additional funding | ||||
| requests due to the covid pandemic. | ||||
| FOG invests conservatively holding all | ||||
| assets in cash with NatWest. Investment | ||||
| Investment performance | Para 1.41 | returns are therefore nil. Trustees believe | ||
| against objectives | that the scale of assets means a low risk and | |||
| low governance approach to investment | ||||
| remains appropriate. | ||||

| I report to the trustees on my examination of the accounts of the above charity (“the Trust”) for the year ended 31 August 2019. As the charity's trustees, you are responsible for the preparation of the accounts in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (“the Act”). I report in respect of my examination of the Trust’s accounts carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act and in carrying out my examination, I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the Act. I have completed my examination. I confirm that no material matters have come to my attention in connection with the examination which gives me cause to believe that in, any material respect: |
-
the accounting records were not kept in accordance with section 130 of the Charities Act; or
-
the accounts did not accord with the accounting records; or
-
the accounts did not comply with the applicable requirements concerning the form and content of accounts set out in the Charities (Accounts and Reports) Regulations 2008 other than any requirement that the accounts give a ‘true and fair’ view which is not a matter considered as part of an independent examination.
I have no concerns and have come across no other matters in connection with the examination to which attention should be drawn in this report in order to enable a proper understanding of the accounts to be reached.
