All Trustees give their time voluntarily and receive no remuneration or other benefits. During the 2020/21 year the Covid-19 pandemic is significantly impacting our operations in Rwanda. Schools have been closed for a significant part of the year and organised sport largely ceased. We continue monitor the situation and to support our RDOs as best we are able, whilst carefully reconsidering our plans for 2021/22.

Section C Objectives and activities

Summary of the objects of the
charity set out in its
governing document
Summary of the main
activities undertaken for the
public benefit in relation to
these objects (include within
this section the statutory
declaration that trustees have
had regard to the guidance
issued by the Charity
Commission on public
benefit)
To benefit the people of Rwanda through the provision of facilities for the
playing of Rugby and through the provision of support (including
coaching, organisational and financial expertise) for the development of
Rugby within Rwanda.
FoRR’s main activities are:
1) The employment of our team of RDOs for the purpose of directly
delivering regular rugby coaching to children and young adults in
schools and clubs across Rwanda. This provides many young
people, boys, girls, men and women with their only regular
organised sporting activity.
2) The organisation of coaching visits by (predominantly UK based)
volunteer rugby coaches with the objectives of: delivering
equipment, training our RDOs, introducing rugby to new areas of
the country, supporting the RRF with their development plans and
reviewing the activities of the in-country team.
In determining these activities the trustees have had regard to the
guidance issued by the Charity Commission on public benefit.

FoRR is grateful for the support received from UK based rugby clubs and other charitable organisations (The Barbarians Rugby Charitable Trust, Heb, Ffin, Bill McLaren Foundation, King Penguins, Connect to Africa and SOS Kit Aid), our regular donors and from the many volunteers that contribute to the smooth running of the charity, fundraise on our behalf and participate in our volunteer coaching trips.

You may choose to include further statements, where relevant, about:

Without the contributions made by all of the people involved we would not have been able to achieve so much.

Section D Achievements and performance

Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year

During 2020/21 FoRR employed RDOs in 9 of Rwanda’s 30 districts. The activities of our RDOs have been significantly curtailed as a result of the covid-pandemic and the volunteer visits planned for the year have been postponed.

Fundraising activity has actively continued and we are delighted to report that we have also received a significant grant from Heb Ffin and from the Barbarians Rugby Charitable Trust. These will enable us to engage a further cohort of primary school teachers, with the support of the Rwandan Ministry for Education, and to train them as Tag Rugby coaches. This will enable us to further extend our programme of work in new areas and to integrate further with the national curriculum. We will also be able to expand our team of RDOs to at least 15 for the next 2 years.

Section E Financial review

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves

Cash at bank at 30 April 2021 was £38.1K in respect of the unrestricted fund and £17.8K in respect of restricted funds. Much of the unrestricted fund cash is earmarked for future volunteer coaching trips which have been postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic and which we hope to run in 2021/2022. The balance of funds currently available exceeds that required to cover operational expenditure for 6 months.

Details of any funds materially Not applicable in deficit

Further financial review details (Optional information)

You may choose to include additional information, where relevant about:

The charity’s principal source of income remains individual donations from supporters and volunteers and we also benefit from restricted grant funding support for key projects.

The charity’s main areas of expenditure are in-country employment costs for our RDOs, tournament costs and the costs associated with UK volunteer coaching trips.

Section F Other optional information

Subject to the restrictions of the Covid-19 pandemic our plans for the coming year are to further increase the number of districts we support with an RDO to increase the geographic coverage of rugby development in Rwanda, to deliver the new Tag programme supported by the Bill McLaren Foundation, Barbarians Rugby Charitable Trust and Heb Ffin and to deliver coaching tours in support of new RDOs / districts and the Rwandan Silverbacks.
