Trustees Report
Constitution
The Sophie Barringer Trust (Sophie’s Appeal) is constituted by a Declaration of Trust dated 19 April 2005 as amended on 03 January 2008.
Objects of the Charity
To assist in the treatment and care of persons suffering from Wilms Disease and other children’s diseases and to support parents/guardians and siblings of patients suffering as a result of such illness through the provision of financial assistance, education and practical advice and through the provision of equipment, facilities and services not normally provided by the statutory authorities;
To provide funds for research into Wilms Disease and other rare children’s cancers.
Trustees and Recruitment
Positions of Trustees are appointed as and when required at either the quarterly Trustee meetings or at an Extraordinary Meeting called for such purposes.
Achievements and Performance
We have been fully booked at the Rainbow Retreat this year and our fundraising efforts have been concentrating on maintaining the very high standards expected by our guest families. The change of the service provider for the Retreat Management went smoothly and we continue to receive positive comments on the facilities and services provided.
We were sad to say goodbye to three of our Trustees during the year and have recruited two to replace them without detriment to the quorum.
Financial Review
This financial year saw the resumption of full activities following the restrictions due to Covid in the previous two years. Our events have been well attended and general donations from our supporters continue to provide the main source of income.
The Retreat has been open and well used all year and the general running costs have not increased markedly. However, general wear and tear as the property ages has seen increased replacement and repair costs. We have been able to cover these from the operating account without having to dip into the reserves.
As agreed last year, we have not made any donations towards the Beads of Courage this financial year. It is proposed that, in the financial year 2023 – 2024 we make the following donations:
Beads of Courage – a sum not exceeding £10,000 Beyond the Moon – a sum not exceeding £6,000 Research – a sum not exceeding £15,000

Reserves Policy
The Trustees have reviewed the policy and have agreed that the minimum reserve will be retained, where possible, to cover the costs of our aims:

Running and maintenance of the Respite Retreat – estimated at £30,000 per annum;

The Beads of Courage programme on Paim Brown Children’s Cancer Ward at Southampton General Hospital – currently £5,000 per annum
