OBJECTIVES AND ACTlVtTIES Objectives and aims Dorset Race Equality Council (DORSET REC) is a coinmunity-based organisation that has been at the forcfront of racc equality in Dorset since the 1990s. We aim to eliminatc racial discrimination and promolc shar¢d values of compassion, professionalism and respect. Our work involves supporting victims of racism by advisin8, SUPPOrtin& and representing Victims of ra¢ial harassment, religiou5 offcnces, racial violence, and discriminaiion. Dorsel Race Equality Council is unique in that il is the sole Dorset based body providing racc specific advice and advocacy. We work in pai1nership wilh oiher volunlary organisalions in support of eihnic minority communities aiding them lo address their needs and aspirations. We maintasned our successful partnership wilh Citi7ens Advice in Dorsel as pan of Ihc AcLcbS to JublicL Foun(lalion projecl until the projecl ended when funding came lo an end during the year. We currently have one specialist case worker with a full caseload of complex cases - 6 are still open, supported during ihis period by our community development officer. Their cases involved housing, police, probation and education. All are al various stages ranging from beeking help of Ihc Member of Parliamenl, waiting for responses from the relevant Ombudsman, appealing lo ihe Chief Executive, awaiting legal advice and for outcomes of challengc5 lo complainls and appeals processes. Two case5 were resolved in ouriihe clicnt5' favuur with cuwnpcnb<ilion and apology offcrcd and one was a successful result at the Indepcndcnt Office for Police Conducl IIOPC) in January 2024 who found in our favour. Our Ca￿wOrk hÉlts a high success rate. We aim to avoid litigation wherever possible. One of the mosl problematic areas is unwillingne55 of th05¢ pursue to acknowledge discrimination and apologise. Difficulties poinied oul in last year's report remain: system failures wiihin public bodies such as noi following complaints procedures, 8ivin8 WTong advice. insulTici¢nt or no training, lime taken in responses, changes in staff and sometimes deliberate obfuscaiin8. One new enquiry was taken on ¥4s a fomal case, although advice. 8uidance and letters of support were provided leading io salisfaLtory rctiolulion with cmploycrs in two instances. However, clienls in a few cases chose not lo pursue their claim5 and wcre disappoinled when faced wilh slubborn resislance, It is a cominon theme that clients choosc to give up when facing ihe pi'ocess of seeking a resoluiion or satisfaclion Ihal can be len￿hY and stressful.
