The ear continued to be dominated bthe Coid 19 pandemic, lockdons and all sorts of difficulties caused bthe pandemic, hich een no, e are still discoering. In spite of this e hae managed a ide range of actiities in schools and in the communit.

The Catalsts anti-racism project completed successfullin Coombeshead Academ(Neton Abbot) and Great Torrington School, after mancoid-related delas. School bookings for in-person Cultural Champions isits are beginning to pick up and the Youth Cultural Champions programme as requested bto schools. The final phase of Connecting Classrooms Through Global Learning as limited bthe pandemic, but it has created school links and trained teachers in global learning in the UK and oerseas.

The CommunitProgramme had a full list of eents each term, all online. Manof these hae focussed on climate justice, helping participants to understand the issues and inspiring them to take action. The Deon Windrush group held a ersuccessful flag-raising and celebration eent at Deon CountHall in June. RAMMs ehibition In Plain Sight, informed bork ith DDE and the Legacof Deon Slae Onership Group, finall ent on displa for Januar to June 2022.

For Fairtrade Fortnight e sourced stories and coffee bags from a omens cooperatie in Randa and took them to schools and communitgroups all oer Deon, ith 12 schools conferences, 7 communit eents and seeral online meetings.

Some of the Deon and Cornall Food for Thought schools hae managed to keep in touch ith their link schools, despite etended school closures in Uganda. Training on teaching using phonics and on bee-keeping, suspended in 2020, has re-started.

DDE staffing has been affected bthe pandemic and the disruption it has caused, including illness, Coid 19 infections and familissues. Staff hae mied ies about moing back into the office, after orking successfullat home for so manmonths! Lorraine completed her time as co-ordinator in August 2021 and after discussions and interies, a neco-ordinator, Anna Hattersle, as appointed in Noember. Sadlthis arrangement as not successful and Anna left in April 2022. After an Aa Dato assess the situation and decide on the best aforard (April 2022) staff and trustees are planning ho to proceed.

DDE

DDE as established to promote, maintain, improe and adance public education, particularlbthe promotion of global education in Deon. We aim to proide a ide range of global learning opportunities for communities and schools in the South West to increase knoledge and understanding of global issues.

Global education encompasses enabling people:

The folloing trustees also sat on the Board during 2021-22: Mic Morgan orks as a Counsellor, is an e-UniersitSenior Lecturer in Health and Nutrition and has orked as an oerseas aid orker in seeral countries; Amal Ghusain is a recentl retired secondarschool teacher and a member of Eeter CitCouncil; Harri Best is a primartrained teacher and DDE olunteer; AndreNorth is a manager, until recentlith the National Lotter Heritage Fund; Des Kumar is a member of DDEs Windrush group ho has orked in a range of roles locall, including teaching and the police; Julian Daeas a Special Educational Needs adisor for Torba and is no doing a PhD at the Uniersit of Eeter.

As alas, e are er grateful for all the time and support proided b our ecellent trustees.

Details of the Board of Trustees for April 2021 - Jul2022 are summarised belo. For purposes of companlathe trustees are directors of the compan. Netrustees mabe appointed bthe Board, bordinarresolution on recommendation of the eisting Trustees. Each member has undertaken to contribute up to 1 to the assets of the companin the eent of its being ound up ith insufficient assets to meet its liabilities.

C This project orks ith a range of pupils from Black, Asian and minorit ethnic backgrounds (creating Youth Cultural Champions) and pupils described as hite,

5

disadantaged and ulnerable. The project orks in to secondarschools, Coombeshead (Neton Abbot) and Great Torrington. In each school it brings together these to groups oer seeral sessions, orks ith their hole ear group for a da(called Impact Das) and also holds to professional deelopment sessions ith the teaching staff. Unfortunatel, repeated difficulties caused bCoid pandemic hae delaed this project, but finallit ill be completed bthe end of Jul2022. Ghee Boman and Sandha Dae hae been orking on this ith Cultural Champion colleagues.

Teachers and pupils reallappreciate the ork and Ghee and Sandha are orking to ensure there is an on-going legac for indiidual pupils but also ithin the schools.

CC . The strength of this programme can be seen in the fact that to other secondarschools hae funded the Youth Cultural Championstraining and Impact Das in their schools (Okehampton and Clst Vale). We hope to fundraise to continue the programme, aiming to encourage schools to take part b offering to subsidise the training.

CC . During 2020-2021, e receied onlone request for a Cultural Champion lie isit! But in 2021-22 requests hae begun to increase: 4 primarschools in autumn 2021, 7 in 2022, plus requests from 2 more schools for adice.

CC , funded bthe goernment and including the British Council. The great joof this programme as the school linking and opportunitto hae echange isits of teachers. Sadl, after March 2020, no isits ere possible, and the programme concluded in December 2021. Funding held bschools for echange isits had to be returned. Hoeer, the programme had created school links, and global learning training of teachers had taken place, in the UK and oerseas.

A . Lorraine as able to create an on-line training programme for the Global Teachers Aard and she ran this successfull in autumn 2021.

D . This ear, the focus as coffee and an effort to make direct connections beteen coffee groers, coffee roasters, independent coffee shops and coffee drinkers! We had coffee plants for the children to see and other items, such as the coffee sack used to transport the coffee beans and ra and roasted coffee beans.

Alison Derrick inestigated Oens, an organic, Fairtrade coffee roaster just outside Ibridge, don the road from her house. Oens bus from seeral countries, but thehae a neconnection ith a omens organic, Fairtrade coffee co-op in Randa. The contact is Jabo Butera, Managing Director of the DiersitBusiness Incubator CIC, ho came from Randa and lies in Plmouth. This as the focus of our Fairtrade Fortnight 2022 actiities.

We held 10 lie Fairtrade schools conferences. As ith all other actiities, Coid managed to disrupt seeral of these eents, especialldue to staff shortages. Once again, trael restrictions meant e ere unable to inite a Fairtrade producer to come to Deon to take part in Fairtrade PrimarSchools conferences and communitmeetings. Hoeer, e felt erpleased ith the Fortnight and the 7 communit coffee mornings and tea parties hich e attended to gie presentations.

We ran to schools conferences and seeral meetings online. Oens intends to strengthen its connection ith the omens co-op in Randa and ill support efforts to reie Ibridge as a Fairtrade Ton. We considering hether e could inite members of the co-op to be our guests for Fairtrade Fortnight in 2023.

, , D C. In Deon and Cornall, some schools hae managed to keep in touch ith their link schools, hich has not been eas, as Ugandan schools ere closed until late Januarthis ear. The

Catholic group of schools in Plmouth completed their curriculum Geographork and the Cornall group of seen schools, part of KernoLearning, ere alloed to use a final part of their CCGL funding to plant trees in Cornall and send funds to plant trees in their link schools in Tororo.

The DDE Christmas Appeal as for in Uganda and 1110 as raised, enabling us to fund 24 more schools in Uganda. These schools receied 20 fruit trees and 20 greillea or similar. The RotarClub of Emouth also proided 330 for 35 trees in 10 schools (15 fruit trees and 20 greillea). Beatrice Okumu and GodfreKisake, our partners in Uganda, hae impressed upon schools the importance of looking after the seedlings and atering them regularl. We hae also discussed starting small tree nurseries in schools to help schools and parents in future.

Before the pandemic e had applied for funding to ork on in Tororo and finall, in Februar/March, e ere able to use this funding. To earlears teachers and a headteacher traelled to Gulu in Northern Uganda, and trained for four eeks ith the NGO Read fLife . We also arranged for a classroom at Rock ViePrimarschool, Tororo, to be refurbished to act as a training centre for phonics. The trainers are noorking ith three EarlYears teachers in 15 Food For Thought schools to train the teachers, obsere their practice, support and encourage them. We hae also proided storbooks for these schools, to enable pupils to practice their reading and learn to enjo reading stories, once the hae gained the skills.

We had also receied funds for , due to be carried out in Ma2020. That training finallhappened in Ma2022. Costs hae increased markedlin Uganda, so e ere able to fund to teachers from onlfie FFT schools, plus one outh attached to each. A carpentrorkshop made 35 beehies, 6 per school and one per outh.

In 2019, fie schools ere trained in beekeeping. During the pandemic and the 83 eek lock-don of schools in Uganda, teachers continued to look after the beehies and harested the hone. Despite challenges, especiallthefts of beehies, these fie schools earned beteen 90 and 270 from the sale of the hone, mone to reinest in the school and garden.

CD . We hae continued to offer some CPD for teachers during the ear. This forms a ke part of both the Catalsts project and CCGL/GTA.

In addition e offered these free teacher orkshops:

D(D) . After some ears of planning, the In Plain Sight ehibition about the transatlantic slae at RAMM (Roal Albert Memorial Museum) as held from Januaruntil June 2022. LDSG and DDE made contributions to this ehibition in arious as. Members of the group carried out in-depth research; e consulted ith the artist in residence, Jo Gregor; e orked alongside the curator, SallAres, on occasions. LDSG and DDEs contributions ere full acknoledged and toards the end of its run e held a gathering to reflect on the ehibition. This as a major piece of ork oer the past fe ears.

C . We continued to run the programme during the ear, mostlon oom. The World At Lunch, eerThursda, is supported b6-8 people eereek. We aim to remain fleible and responsie, seeking opportunities to further our ork ithin a changing social, political and funding landscape and noith the additional challenge of orking in a orld changed bthe pandemic. We ill continue to focus on diersit, anti-racism and multicultural understanding as ell as ider issues of global understanding and equit, including climate justice. We ill seek to epand our ork in schools nothat in-person ork is easier. Our communit programme has shon that it is robust and resilient: e ill eperiment ith a miof online, in person and hbrid eents to find the best mias circumstances change. We are currentlreieing our structure and priorities, ith orkshops in March and April 2022 as the first steps.

Fundraising continues to be a challenging area for DDE. We cannot report significant success ith fundraising, apart from the Windrush Dagrant. We also receied 3,000 from Deon CountCouncil as funding to reactiate our ork after the pandemic. Smaller grants from DCCs diersitfund hae helped fund specific eents and actiities.

Our main project, Catalstsas erdelaed in its delier, so e are nousing those funds. RAMM proided funding for the research ork carried out bthe LDSG for their In Plain Sightehibition. We hae also receied funds to enable a nebook about slaerin Deon to be ritten bLuc MacKeith.

We ere successful ith a funding application to celebrate Windrush in Deon in 2022, funded bthe goernment department for Leelling Up, Housing and Communities.

For ork in Uganda, e hae been quite successful ith modest grant applications, although e ere unable to delier the projects until 2022.

We are ergrateful to our friends and supporters ho gie to DDE on a regular basis and support other actiities.

As e all face an een more challenging financial outlook, e ill make plans to fund our basic offer.

We are alas pleased to find potential netrustees, and e recruit ba miture of adertising and ord of mouth. Prospectie trustees hold discussions ith the Chair and are inited to attend a Board meeting as obserers. As detailed aboe, Deon Deelopment Education has undertaken a ide range of educational ork ithin the limitations of continuing disruption caused bthe coid-19 pandemic. We hae orked ith schools and in the ider communitacross Deon, Plmouth and Torbato raise aareness and understanding of lies in other cultures and other parts of the orld, through both formal and informal education. Our ork ith schools and the ider communit has enabled:

These and all the other actiities of DDE encourage people to reflect on the connections beteen their on lies and those of others around the orld.

This is an eciting time for DDE as e emerge from the difficulties of lockdons and begin to reie our priorities and set negoals. The trustees are grateful to all the staff, ho hae orked fleiblin changing circumstances to delier another actie and successful ear.
