## **A����� ������ 2021-22** 


## **�������� �� ��� ����** 

The �ear continued to be dominated b�the Co�id 19 pandemic, lockdo�ns and all sorts of difficulties caused b�the pandemic, �hich e�en no�, �e are still disco�ering. In spite of this �e ha�e managed a �ide range of acti�ities in schools and in the communit�. 

The Catal�sts anti-racism project completed successfull�in Coombeshead Academ�(Ne�ton Abbot) and Great Torrington School, after man�co�id-related dela�s. School bookings for in-person Cultural Champions �isits are beginning to pick up and the Youth Cultural Champions programme �as requested b�t�o schools. The final phase of Connecting Classrooms Through Global Learning �as limited b�the pandemic, but it has created school links and trained teachers in global learning in the UK and o�erseas. 

The Communit�Programme had a full list of e�ents each term, all online. Man�of these ha�e focussed on climate justice, helping participants to understand the issues and inspiring them to take action. The De�on Windrush group held a �er�successful flag-raising and celebration e�ent at De�on Count�Hall in June. RAMM�s e�hibition �In Plain Sight�, informed b��ork �ith DDE and the Legac�of De�on Sla�e O�nership Group, finall� �ent on displa� for Januar� to June 2022. 

For Fairtrade Fortnight �e sourced stories �and coffee bags �from a �omen�s cooperati�e in R�anda and took them to schools and communit�groups all o�er De�on, �ith 12 schools conferences, 7 communit� e�ents and se�eral online meetings. 

Some of the De�on and Corn�all Food for Thought schools ha�e managed to keep in touch �ith their link schools, despite e�tended school closures in Uganda. Training on teaching using phonics and on bee-keeping, suspended in 2020, has re-started. 

DDE staffing has been affected b�the pandemic and the disruption it has caused, including illness, Co�id 19 infections and famil�issues. Staff ha�e mi�ed �ie�s about mo�ing back into the office, after �orking successfull�at home for so man�months! Lorraine completed her time as co-ordinator in August 2021 and after discussions and inter�ie�s, a ne�co-ordinator, Anna Hattersle�, �as appointed in No�ember. Sadl�this arrangement �as not successful and Anna left in April 2022. After an A�a� Da�to assess the situation and decide on the best �a�for�ard (April 2022) staff and trustees are planning ho� to proceed. 

## **DDE�� ����������** 

DDE �as established to promote, maintain, impro�e and ad�ance public education, particularl�b�the promotion of global education in De�on. We aim to pro�ide a �ide range of global learning opportunities for communities and schools in the South West to increase kno�ledge and understanding of global issues. 

Global education encompasses enabling people: 

- To understand the links bet�een their o�n li�es and those of people throughout the �orld; 

� To increase understanding of the economic, social, political and en�ironmental forces �hich shape our li�es;

- To de�elop skills, attitudes and �alues �hich enable people to �ork together to bring about change 

- and take control of their o�n li�es; 

- To �ork to�ards achie�ing a more just and sustainable �ork in �hich po�er and resources re more 

- equitabl� shared. 

## **��������� ��� ������������** 

The charit�is a compan�limited b�guarantee and operates in accordance �ith the pro�isions of its Memorandum and Articles of Association. The charit�ma�act onl�in accordance �ith its objects and ma� not trade other�ise. 

DDE is managed b�a Board of Trustees. Our chairperson, Sue Ka�, is a former teacher no��orking as a researcher at Pl�mouth Marine Laborator�. Our �ice chair is Carol�n Hallett, a retired Special Needs Teacher. The role of Treasurer �as �acant until No�ember 2021, �hen �e �ere joined b� Fiona Readman, an accountant and former teacher. The follo�ing trustees also sat on the Board during 2021-22: Mic Morgan �orks as a Counsellor, is an e�-Uni�ersit�Senior Lecturer in Health and Nutrition and has �orked as an o�erseas aid �orker in se�eral countries; Amal Ghusain is a recentl� retired secondar�school teacher and a member of E�eter Cit�Council; Harri Best is a primar�trained teacher and DDE �olunteer; Andre�North is a manager, until recentl��ith the National Lotter� Heritage Fund; Des Kumar is a member of DDE�s Windrush group �ho has �orked in a range of roles locall�, including teaching and the police; Julian Da�e��as a Special Educational Needs ad�isor for Torba� and is no� doing a PhD at the Uni�ersit� of E�eter. 

As al�a�s, �e are �er� grateful for all the time and support pro�ided b� our e�cellent trustees.

## **E��������/�������:** 

**�C������������������** This project �orks �ith a range of pupils from Black, Asian and minorit� ethnic backgrounds (creating Youth Cultural Champions) and pupils described as �hite,

disad�antaged and �ulnerable. The project �orks in t�o secondar�schools, Coombeshead (Ne�ton Abbot) and Great Torrington. In each school it brings together these t�o groups o�er se�eral sessions, �orks �ith their �hole �ear group for a da�(called Impact Da�s) and also holds t�o professional de�elopment sessions �ith the teaching staff. Unfortunatel�, repeated difficulties caused b�Co�id pandemic ha�e dela�ed this project, but finall�it �ill be completed b�the end of Jul�2022. Ghee Bo�man and Sandh�a Da�e ha�e been �orking on this �ith Cultural Champion colleagues. 

Teachers and pupils reall�appreciate the �ork and Ghee and Sandh�a are �orking to ensure there is an on-going legac� for indi�idual pupils but also �ithin the schools. 

**�����C�������C��������** . The strength of this programme can be seen in the fact that t�o other secondar�schools ha�e funded the Youth Cultural Champions�training and Impact Da�s in their schools (Okehampton and Cl�st Vale). We hope to fundraise to continue the programme, aiming to encourage schools to take part b� offering to subsidise the training. 

**C�������C��������** . During 2020-2021, �e recei�ed onl�one request for a Cultural Champion li�e �isit! But in 2021-22 requests ha�e begun to increase: 4 primar�schools in autumn 2021, 7 in 2022, plus requests from 2 more schools for ad�ice. 

**C���������C���������������������������������������** , funded b�the go�ernment and including the British Council. The great jo�of this programme �as the school linking and opportunit�to ha�e e�change �isits of teachers. Sadl�, after March 2020, no �isits �ere possible, and the programme concluded in December 2021. Funding held b�schools for e�change �isits had to be returned. Ho�e�er, the programme had created school links, and global learning training of teachers had taken place, in the UK and o�erseas. 

**��������������A����** . Lorraine �as able to create an on-line training programme for the Global Teachers A�ard and she ran this successfull� in autumn 2021. 

**���������D����** . This �ear, the focus �as coffee and an effort to make direct connections bet�een coffee gro�ers, coffee roasters, independent coffee shops and coffee drinkers! We had coffee plants for the children to see and other items, such as the coffee sack used to transport the coffee beans and ra� and roasted coffee beans. 

Alison Derrick in�estigated O�ens, an organic, Fairtrade coffee roaster just outside I��bridge, do�n the road from her house. O�ens bu�s from se�eral countries, but the�ha�e a ne�connection �ith a �omen�s organic, Fairtrade coffee co-op in R�anda. The contact is Jabo Butera, Managing Director of the Di�ersit�Business Incubator CIC, �ho came from R�anda and li�es in Pl�mouth. This �as the focus of our Fairtrade Fortnight 2022 acti�ities. 

We held 10 li�e Fairtrade schools conferences. As �ith all other acti�ities, Co�id managed to disrupt se�eral of these e�ents, especiall�due to staff shortages. Once again, tra�el restrictions meant �e �ere unable to in�ite a Fairtrade producer to come to De�on to take part in Fairtrade Primar�Schools conferences and communit�meetings. Ho�e�er, �e felt �er�pleased �ith the Fortnight �and the 7 communit� coffee mornings and tea parties �hich �e attended to gi�e presentations. 

We ran t�o schools conferences and se�eral meetings online. O�ens intends to strengthen its connection �ith the �omen�s co-op in R�anda and �ill support efforts to re�i�e I��bridge as a Fairtrade To�n. We considering �hether �e could in�ite members of the co-op to be our guests for Fairtrade Fortnight in 2023. 

**������������������������������������, �����������������������������, D������� C�������.** In De�on and Corn�all, some schools ha�e managed to keep in touch �ith their link schools, �hich has not been eas�, as Ugandan schools �ere closed until late Januar�this �ear. The

Catholic group of schools in Pl�mouth completed their curriculum Geograph��ork and the Corn�all group of se�en schools, part of Kerno�Learning, �ere allo�ed to use a final part of their CCGL funding to plant trees in Corn�all and send funds to plant trees in their link schools in Tororo. 

The DDE Christmas Appeal �as for **������������** in Uganda and �1110 �as raised, enabling us to fund 24 more schools in Uganda. These schools recei�ed 20 fruit trees and 20 gre�illea or similar. The Rotar�Club of E�mouth also pro�ided �330 for 35 trees in 10 schools (15 fruit trees and 20 gre�illea). Beatrice Okumu and Godfre�Kisak�e, our partners in Uganda, ha�e impressed upon schools the importance of looking after the seedlings and �atering them regularl�. We ha�e also discussed starting small tree nurseries in schools to help schools and parents in future. 

Before the pandemic �e had applied for funding to �ork on **�������** in Tororo and finall�, in Februar�/March, �e �ere able to use this funding. T�o earl��ears teachers and a headteacher tra�elled to Gulu in Northern Uganda, and trained for four �eeks �ith the NGO _�Read f��Life�_ . We also arranged for a classroom at Rock Vie�Primar�school, Tororo, to be refurbished to act as a training centre for phonics. The trainers are no��orking �ith three Earl�Years teachers in 15 Food For Thought schools to train the teachers, obser�e their practice, support and encourage them. We ha�e also pro�ided stor�books for these schools, to enable pupils to practice their reading and learn to enjo� reading stories, once the� ha�e gained the skills. 

We had also recei�ed funds for **�����������������** , due to be carried out in Ma�2020. That training finall�happened in Ma�2022. Costs ha�e increased markedl�in Uganda, so �e �ere able to fund t�o teachers from onl�fi�e FFT schools, plus one �outh attached to each. A carpentr��orkshop made 35 beehi�es, 6 per school and one per �outh. 

In 2019, fi�e schools �ere trained in beekeeping. During the pandemic and the 83 �eek lock-do�n of schools in Uganda, teachers continued to look after the beehi�es and har�ested the hone�. Despite challenges, especiall�thefts of beehi�es, these fi�e schools earned bet�een �90 and �270 from the sale of the hone�, mone� to rein�est in the school and garden. 

**C�D ����������������������������������������������������.** We ha�e continued to offer some CPD for teachers during the �ear. This forms a ke� part of both the Catal�sts project and CCGL/GTA. 

In addition �e offered these free teacher �orkshops: 

- �Telling Our Stories Finding Our Roots, in De�on� education resources; 

- �A Fair COP. From climate crisis to climate justice��ith guests from InterClimate Net�ork and O�fam 

- �Teaching about Climate Justice�, for 20 trainee teachers from E�eter Uni�ersit�, funded b� O�fam 

## **C�������� ���������, ������ ��� ��������.** 

**��������D�����������������������(�D��)** . After some �ears of planning, the �In Plain Sight� e�hibition about the transatlantic sla�e at RAMM (Ro�al Albert Memorial Museum) �as held from Januar�until June 2022. LDSG and DDE made contributions to this e�hibition in �arious �a�s. Members of the group carried out in-depth research; �e consulted �ith the artist in residence, Jo� Gregor�; �e �orked alongside the curator, Sall�A�res, on occasions. LDSG and DDE�s contributions �ere full� ackno�ledged �and to�ards the end of its run �e held a gathering to reflect on the e�hibition. This �as a major piece of �ork o�er the past fe� �ears. 

**C�����������������** . We continued to run the programme during the �ear, mostl�on �oom. The World At Lunch, e�er�Thursda�, is supported b�6-8 people e�er��eek. It no�has regular attendance from Dominica in Jamaica and Theo in the USA, �hich brings a different focus to the discussions!The E�eter book club meets t�ice a term and the Pl�mouth book club eight times per

- Sadl�, Oli�er had to cut short his time �ith us this term but hopes to return in September.

## **DDE ��������� ����** 

We aim to remain fle�ible and responsi�e, seeking opportunities to further our �ork �ithin a changing social, political and funding landscape �and no��ith the additional challenge of �orking in a �orld changed b�the pandemic. We �ill continue to focus on di�ersit�, anti-racism and multicultural understanding as �ell as �ider issues of global understanding and equit�, including climate justice. We �ill seek to e�pand our �ork in schools no�that in-person �ork is easier. Our communit� programme has sho�n that it is robust and resilient: �e �ill e�periment �ith a mi�of online, in person and h�brid e�ents to find the best mi�as circumstances change. We are currentl�re�ie�ing our structure and priorities, �ith �orkshops in March and April 2022 as the first steps. 

## **�������������� ������** 

Fundraising continues to be a challenging area for DDE. We cannot report significant success �ith fundraising, apart from the Windrush Da�grant. We also recei�ed �3,000 from De�on Count�Council as funding to reacti�ate our �ork after the pandemic. Smaller grants from DCC�s di�ersit�fund ha�e helped fund specific e�ents and acti�ities. 

Our main project, �Catal�sts��as �er�dela�ed in its deli�er�, so �e are no�using those funds. RAMM pro�ided funding for the research �ork carried out b�the LDSG for their �In Plain Sight�e�hibition. We ha�e also recei�ed funds to enable a ne�book about sla�er�in De�on to be �ritten b�Luc� MacKeith. 

We �ere successful �ith a funding application to celebrate Windrush in De�on in 2022, funded b�the go�ernment department for Le�elling Up, Housing and Communities. 

� 



For �ork in Uganda, �e ha�e been quite successful �ith modest grant applications, although �e �ere unable to deli�er the projects until 2022. 

We are �er�grateful to our friends and supporters �ho gi�e to DDE on a regular basis and support other acti�ities. 

As �e all face an e�en more challenging financial outlook, �e �ill make plans to fund our basic offer. 

## **������� ����������� ��� ���������** 

We are al�a�s pleased to find potential ne�trustees, and �e recruit b�a mi�ture of ad�ertising and �ord of mouth. Prospecti�e trustees hold discussions �ith the Chair and are in�ited to attend a Board meeting as obser�ers. Once agreement has been reached among the e�isting trustees, their appointment can be confirmed at the follo�ing Board meeting, in accordance �ith our Memorandum and Articles. A character reference is taken up for prospecti�e trustees not alread�kno�n to us. All ne�trustees are pro�ided �ith information to familiarise them �ith the charit��s �ork, its structure and its go�ernance _._ 

## **������� �� ���� ���� �� ������� ��� ��������� �������� ��� ��� ������ �������** 

As detailed abo�e, De�on De�elopment Education has undertaken a �ide range of educational �ork �ithin the limitations of continuing disruption caused b�the co�id-19 pandemic. We ha�e �orked �ith schools and in the �ider communit�across De�on, Pl�mouth and Torba�to raise a�areness and understanding of li�es in other cultures and other parts of the �orld, through both formal and informal education. Our �ork �ith schools and the �ider communit� has enabled: 

- children and teachers to understand the e�perience of pupils from ethnic minorities and to challenge racism; 

- �oung people from ethnic minorit�backgrounds to de�elop self-confidence and share their culture �ith others; 

- children and adults to understand ho�Fairtrade has impro�ed the li�es of �omen coffee gro�ers and ho� local ethical businesses can link �ith Fairtrade producers; 

- people across De�on to learn about the impact of climate change in poorer countries and the urgenc� of climate justice. 

These and all the other acti�ities of DDE encourage people to reflect on the connections bet�een their o�n li�es and those of others around the �orld. 

## **C���������** 

This is an e�citing time for DDE as �e emerge from the difficulties of lockdo�ns and begin to re�ie� our priorities and set ne�goals. The trustees are grateful to all the staff, �ho ha�e �orked fle�ibl�in changing circumstances to deli�er another acti�e and successful �ear.

**Respective responsibilities** The charity's trustees are responsible for the preparation of the accounts. The **of trustees and examiner** charity�s trustees consider that an audit is n ot required for this year under section 144 of the Charities Act 2011 (the Charities Act) and that an independent examination is needed.

      - examine the accounts under section 145 of the Charities Act, 

      - to follow the procedures laid down in the general Directions given by the Charity Commission (under section 145(5)(b) of the Charities Act, and 

      - to state whether particular matters have come to my attention. 

   - **Basis of independent** My examination was carried out in accordance with general Directions given by the **examiner�s statement** Charity Commission.  An examination includes a review of the accounting records kept by the charity and a comparison of the accounts presented with those records. It also includes consideration of any unusual items or disclosures in the accounts, and seeking explanations from the trustees concerning any such matters.  The procedures undertaken do not provide all the evidence that would be required in an audit, and consequently no opinion is given as to whether the accounts present a �true and fair� v iew and the report is limited to those matters set out in the statement below.

A group of researchers focused on Devon's links with transatlantic slave trade. Working with schools on the UN sustainable development goals.

Telling Our Stories Devon project funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund.
