The report of the trustees of the MSA is one of optimism and hope, which we probably wouldn’t have predicted after the 12 months we have just had and particularly at the height of the pandemic. The concern was that the pandemic would have significant impact on the long-term future of the MSA particularly around finances. However, covid recovery financial payments from our local district council has allayed those fears and has helped maintain a strong financial position. We have distributed some of that funding to the three sports clubs which has also helped them in overcoming some of their financial concerns.
The pandemic has obviously resulted in much less use of our facilities than would normally be expected, with private bookings non-existent which has meant bar takings have mainly relied on the few sports matches we have hosted.
Local sport has just survived the pandemic and is beginning to get going again and its pleasing that all our three sports clubs are up and running and participating in competitive fixtures once again. There were growing concerns about participation in grass roots sports even before the pandemic, and as sports participation charity we must continue to promote ourselves and what we can offer to our local community. It is pleasing that our facilities are now going to be used by the local playgroup and have been used this summer by a company which offer school holiday sports for local youngsters, these will help raise our profile and hopefully generate more volunteers from our community.
We do only have a small band of volunteers who run both the three clubs and the MSA. It is becoming increasingly difficult to recruit more. It’s great that we have a new bookings secretary this year, but we still need to replace the treasurer who wishes to depart having left the area. We are grateful for the work of all Officers throughout a difficult year. and would like to place on record our thanks for their work and those representatives from the clubs who have attended most meetings and kept sport running.
We continue to have plans to improve and modernise our facilities with work on showers, windows, and the kitchen due to take place over the next year.
With us being in a strong financial position, improved facilities and sport back on the agenda we can be optimistic, but that optimism will require more volunteers and more support.
