BGCI was founded in 1987 to link botanic gardens as a co-operating global network for effective plant conservation. BGCI aims to do this in four ways byleading and advocacy,leading innovative and strategic projects achieving outcomes in plant conservation policy, practice and education,building plant conservation capacity in botanic gardens and broader society,and by providing funding.

Objects: (I) To Promote For The Public Benefit The Conservation And Protection Of Plant Species Of The World And In Particular But Without Limiting The Foregoing The Promotion Of The Cultivation And Maintenance Of Such Plants By Botanic Gardens The Advancement Of Education Of The Public And Of Vocational Training In Relation To Such Plants And The Promotion Of Research Concerning Such Plants And Their Conservation Provided That All The Useful Results Such Research Shall Be Published
