Aims of the Charity

The object of the band is to advance the education of the public in the United Kingdom and throughout the World, in the art and science of British Brass Band Music through the provision of public band concerts and recitals and training in Brass Band Music

Band Activities

Competitions

Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic all brass band contests were cancelled for this year, with the first contest due to return in February 2022 for the North West Areas and the return of the BrassPass contest in May 2022.

Concerts

To bring the band to the public through the use of social media we created new self-promotional online videos. Firstly in conjunction with Age UK in its campaign against loneliness during the pandemic we created a Christmas video (in john Lewis style). This was then followed by a “Local Heroes” video in February which focused on all the local keyworkers within our communities.

May 2021 saw the easing of restrictions and a hint of being able to return to some sort of normality. In small socially distanced groups, we travelled across Bolton to film our new video: ‘Fanfare for the Common Man’ by Aaron Copland. From Winter Hill at 05:30 in the morning, to the quiet interiors longing for footfall of Bolton Steam Museum, we wanted to capture just some of the places and organisations that make our home so special to us.

May also saw the band back performing live at the BrassPass Festival of Brass in Halifax theatre, albeit under strict Covid guidance; bell covers, screens, social distancing, masks and Covid tests. This should have been a contest but due to Covid restrictions the organisers changed it to a day of a championship bands, in turn, performing a short concert programme.

We were finally able to return to a “new normal” in July 2021 with our first concert, back in our local community in over 18 months, arranged for the August bank holiday weekend at the Westhoughton Cricket Club.

Support & Fundraising

Throughout the year the management team have continued to ensure that the band’s finances are in order and money has been spent wisely during lean times.

Due to restrictions the band were unable to do our regular Christmas carolling around our local food and drink establishments and were only able to perform outside, socially distanced. Although this was much appreciated by the local community our fundraising was significantly affected for this year.

We have managed to keep a steady stream of income through the continued support of our patrons and our monthly 100 club draw. This is an area which needs further development and focus for 2021-22 to increase the number of participants.

Development Activities

Activities have been limited during the last 12 months therefore to maintain playing standards and to continue to engage with our current players the online video recordings have given us focus through these difficult times.

Summary & Plans for 2021-22

Recruitment is a priority as the pandemic has seen players leave and not return to banding. The pandemic has expedited the decline

of players and is an ongoing struggle for many bands across the country.

It was felt that to attract new players following the pandemic we needed diverse and exciting projects. Suggested activities to consider for next year include a Tour to Guernsey in 2022, a series of community concerts to get ourselves back out there and a proposed grant funded Royal Variety style concert celebrating the arts in Bolton which would see the band collaborating in a with other music/drama/dance groups within Bolton.

The band needs to increase its concert diary and to build on fundraising efforts in order to keep the band’s finances stable. The band will continue to strive to perform to the highest possible standard in concerts and contests across the region and the country.

WINGATES BAND

In accordance with our terms of engagement we have prepared for your approval the financial statements of Wingates Band for the year ended 31st October 2021 on pages four to seven from the accounting records and from information and explanations you have given us.

As a practising member firm of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), we are subject to its ethical and other professional requirements which are detailed at icaew.com/membershandbook.

This report is made solely to you, in accordance with our terms of engagement. Our work has been undertaken solely to prepare for your approval the financial statements of Wingates Band and state those matters that we have agreed to state to you in this report in accordance with ICAEW Technical Release TECH08/16AAF. To the fullest extent permitted by law, we do not accept or assume responsibility to anyone other than you for our work or for this report.

You have approved the financial statements for the year ended 31st October 2021 and have acknowledged your responsibility for them, for the appropriateness of the financial reporting framework adopted and for providing all information and explanations necessary for their compilation.
