Chairman
2020 was a hard year for Herts boat rescue covid 19 put a halt to so many operations and organised events, public were held in the UK unable to leave the country, with the added hot weather aspect to 2020 this encouraged them to seek outdoor fitness and pleasure this included outdoor swimming and youngsters needed guidance. Herts boat rescue came to the aid of the public and the emergency services which were already stretched in 2020, Herts Boat Rescue had a professional focus on water rescue and water safety in Hertfordshire.
Although many events and what we do normally was put on hold in 2020, HBR had one of the busiest years with many callouts, patrols, and flood rescue.
For Herts Boat Rescue grants dried up completely for 2020 – all drawn back to support Covid 19, with this in mind donations from local town councils and the Julia Haus Rising fund assisted us in keeping running.
2020 overview-
- Just some of the grants
The Julia and Hans Rausing Trust to support us with our building and our charity actives – charity survival fund 2020
Local town councils for running costs
Morrison’s for our new boat acquisition
Hbr facts for 2020
1000’s of volunteer hours operational run 2020 showed us over 8 callouts to assist with water related incidents 1 first aid incident.
Well over 10,000 people supported with patrols through HERTFORDSHIRE Assisted in fire and police rescue activates. 1000’s of water safety advice interventions.
Our team success-
A huge success for our team in 2020 ensured we kept running, core running was kept to a minimum but essential training was kept running and emergency assistance as well as Covid water rescue patrols which protected the public through 2020, we feel this will be needed from now on.
Our team which is dedicated to water rescue came through in 2020 keeping focus on water rescue and water safety even though a pandemic was in process.
The success of the organisation would not happen without the help and support of all the volunteers.
I wish to thank all of our sponsors and donations that helped us through 2020, without these we would not exist as well as the exceptional support from the Julia and Hans Rausing fund which helped us through 2020 to keep our charity alive.
I hope next year 2021 will be successful for us again keeping the public safe as well as we hope a boost for funding in 2021 will be needed to keep our small charity on the road.
“I am proud to be the chairman Hertfordshire boat rescue, our small team does great work locally in Hertfordshire for no reward and also the UK when the needs arise, I’m 100% sure we will be successful in keeping water safe in 2021”
I will see you all again soon in 2021 in the rescue work we do.
Stuart foreman
Vice Chairman
2020 continued to see Herts Boat Rescue, providing a valuable resource to the community, against the backdrop of a pandemic and lockdowns.
Providing a higher emphasis in local patrols, and checking on hot spot areas when needed with the cancellation of events we normally attend.
This shows the commitment of the clubs role in supporting the local communities and promoting water safety. The main issue worked around was maintaining qualifications and training, so continuing to provide the club ready for flood response. The other issue that has effected the club is the reduction in funding opportunities, this was mainly due to not been able to attend local events and had to rely on our social internet channels to promote the club.
As always I use this report as a platform to formally thank people, for all the support given. This includes the other committee members who work in the running of the club, this involves dedicating a significant amount of time and effort to the various tasks that are required to make the club function. I would like to give a special mention to Stuart our chairman who has been a significant driving force as always, but especially during this difficult period.
To the various members who donate time, effort and costs in attending events, meetings, training and general club running issues. Without these dedicated volunteers and the family’s that support them, the club would not exist.
Finally the financial assistance and grants by various companies, organisations and people, helping support the club in its many roles.
Chris Pollard
Secretary
2020 saw a very different year in the life of Herts Boat Rescue, with the pandemic of Covid-19. This has had a considerable impact to funding and events through the year.
We still managed to run SRT and SFRBO training during this time so the team was ready for deployment through DEFRA.
The organisation still managed to deliver riverside patrols to promote drowning prevention and still provided call outs during Covid-19 which is a testament to the colleagues that we have within the organisation. With the move to online training sessions throughout the lockdown using Zoom and I would like to thank Jon Tricker for the endless use of the Zoom links to enable us to run these sessions with a completely different concept of training.
We are hoping to arrange SRT and SFRBO training courses to keep up to the high standards that are needed for the rescue industry next year, which will give our volunteers a great opportunity to further their skills at reduced costs.
Running costs have yet again increased this year and our insurance costs are a big part of our funds, local councils and town councils have been very generous with small grants to keep us afloat.
I would like to thank Kim Ward for her help with the accounts and Mark Norbury for his help in carrying out equipment checks.
I am hopeful that when lockdowns are finally finished then we can get back to some normality and we can get back to our events and drive income back into the organisation.
I would just like to say a big thank you to the sponsors that helped in the organisations’ running in 2020 and look forward to seeing more on patrol and events in 2021.
Darren Foreman
Officer Without Portfolio
The Club has been running very smoothly during the covid-19 outbreak and with restrictions over the last year we have been able to stay afloat through this tough time.
Stuart has been out on his weekly patrols, and has seen a marked increase of footfall on the riverbanks and wild swimmers, this includes the ones that like to “lock jump” at Sawbridgeworth and Hertford which means that our future patrols need to continue. This will give a high-level focus of safety engagement to the public.

I would like to end by saying a huge ‘thank you’ to all who have continued to strive to keep the Organisation running through a very difficult year, especially to Stuart who has managed to still raise a great amount of money, at a time when fundraising has never been so difficult. Again, as I write, I hope Herts Boat Rescue continues to provide a fantastic service to the public, in the years that lie ahead. Keep safe and well. Onwards and upwards………………..
