Obj¢ctives Ind activities The objects of the chtrity are as follows: I, To promote and provide education in The Gambia in the L2r< welfarc and management of horse$ 8nd donkeys and th¢ treatment of sick animals. 2, To relieve $uff¢ring of horses and donknys and othtt animals in need of care at)d artention 8nd to pmvide treatm¢nt facilitics for sick and injured animals. 3, To promote humane behaviour towards animals by providing appropriate ¢on, protectio treatm¢nt and Srity for animals which are in need of eare and atntion by reason ol sickness, maitreallncn( poor ¢ircumstanc¢s or ill usage and to ¢du¢at¢ th¢ public in matters pertainin8 w an1rn wclfar¢ in 8¢neral and the prcvention of cruelty and suff1ng among animals. The clwity Strives to reduce rural poverty by increasing the productiviry of working horse5 and donkeys through welfare and management education. It also provides VeIn$ry resources and education and explores ways of improving the nutrition and the design of carts and h¢s5 cost effectively. Public benefit The trustees have paid due regard to guidanc¢ issued by the Chariry Commission in declding what tIVIti the charity should undertake. Whilst we are attracting more and more followers the amount donaied be¢om¢s smaller. The work covered by the charity is incre8sing so we are eating inlo our reserve5. This Ye we have two young vets with teaching qualifications joining u5 which means that we are able to take students from oversw for trainin8 wider vetcrinary supervision. We hope that this new training initiative will noi only bcncfit thc Sd¢nts but a130 bring in some muGh needed income for thc charity. We ¢ontinue to tratn students from College gnd University and there is now a plgn to open a Faculty of Velerin8ry Science at thc University of The Gambia. th¢y will llse our facilities for the practical traÉning of the Students. Many of our previous students ar¢ now graduated and are in tLtm establishing Ajumai W¢lfareAdVoc¢S group5 in the areas where they now work. The thange in attitude towards anirnals meant thal we have many tnore 8llitnaEs reported io us. not only quine5 but atso dogs and ¢ats and wildlif¢. We continu¢ to work closely ivith th¢ D¢parthicnt of WdI]fe and provide treatment for many wild animats. This year civets. monkcys, hyenas and mongooses. We work with the Department of Livestock Servi¢es and it is helpfid to have their sUPrt and encouragement When we cany out Rabies vaccination campaigns or neutering campaigns, we valuc thcir help and approval. Support We are d¢light¢d that as we become better known. both natioDally 8nd internationally. we 8re re¢¢iving a great m8my more visitors lo our centers. The school trips continue to Incre Én number. Many of the sthools are establishints Anima] Advocates clubs and the animal welfare message is spreading- We are DOW well known to the tow operators tourist numbcrs are increasing. V¢hicl¢ maintenance and fi1 is very expensive and the bad roads in Th¢ Gambia cause many problems. W¢ are tying to reduce costs 2nd have done this by training our staff to ride motorbikes and us¢ th¢m as much as possible for cau ou Trustees We have been lucky enough to have the sam¢ Trusiees ftir the life of this charity. Sadly M&K Murray has had to Stsrtd down due to ill health. Thc years have taken their toll at we need to recruit some youn8er Trustrrs. Conclusion Expenses ar¢ rising at an aiamiing rate and dOnlOn5 and subscriptions are reducin& We are eating into our reserves and we are going to have to make some very tough decisions il we are to remain stabl& We need to improve our l¢gaGy publicity and attract more supporters &8 the average donation has reduccd by aknut 50/0 We are making a positive impact on animal welfare and providing exrKll¢nt traintng for our staff and the students who visit us from University and college but we ar¢ victims of our own success as the demands for our s¢rvi¢¢s outstrip our income.
