Trustees’ Annual Report and Accounts for the period from 01 October 2021 to 30 September 2022
Charity name: The Cookham Festival, registration number 1094999
Objectives and Activities
The purpose of The Cookham Festival is to advance the education of the public in music and the arts in particular but not exclusively by organising music festivals in Cookham (in the Royal Borough of Windsor and Maidenhead).
The trustees, through the committee, organise an arts festival in Cookham for the public benefit, with events that celebrate music, the spoken word and the visual arts for education and enjoyment. Surplus funds are distributed to local organisations and charities for the promotion and facilitation of arts in the community
The Cookham Festival owes it success to the work and commitment of a 16-strong committee who manage the events and administration, finance, marketing etc associated with the Festival and to the 64 volunteers, drawn from the local community, who were deployed during the Festival.
Achievements and Performance
The Festival originally planned for May 2021 was cancelled for Covid-related reasons, so the Festival in 2022 was eagerly anticipated.
Two ‘in between’ events with authors Nick Hornby and Gerald Seymour took place in the Autumn of 2021. The main Festival took place between 6[th] and 22[nd] May 2022 with over 50 events in 17 days showcasing predominantly local talent.
The Festival launched with an evening with Sir Michael Parkinson and spoken word events included talks by local author Mike Bryan; archaeologist Gabor Thomas; historian Kate Murphy; fashion historian Amber Butchart; art historian Dr James Fox and author Robert Thorogood. Under Milk Wood was performed by local amateur actors in Holy Trinity Church and the Comedy Club drew a capacity audience.
The visual arts were represented by the Sculpture Garden, now a major national attraction. Members of the Cookham Arts Club painted pictures of the architecture along the High Street and exhibited their work. Photographs of local scenes were shown at the Odney Club. Custodians at the Stanley Spencer Gallery organised tours of the latest exhibition and walks around the village.
Music proved as popular as ever. Pupils from our local primary school performed in the World Premiere of Katie Cox and the Motion of the Ocean, commissioned by the Festival from local musician and composer Rob Castell. We hosted The Bucks, Berks and Oxfordshire Big Band; the Windsor and Maidenhead Symphony Orchestra and talented local young classical musicians. Much fun was had at the Slapping Skins Drum workshop. A four-week course of ballroom and Latin dance culminated in a tea dance on the last
weekend. Toby Cruse brought Stars of the West End and James Church brought cabaret to Cookham and a Gala Concert, with Alexandra Wood, closed the Festival.
Judging from feedback, people at the Festival valued the opportunity to venture out ‘as normal’ after lockdown, to meet friends and enjoyed the events they attended.
The Festival has no specific objectives for fundraising of raising monies from our activities. However, we aim to improve our performance vs the previous Festival:
-
We sold 3195 tickets, including the two events in 2021 (+34% vs 2019) via online portal TicketSource
-
Ticket sales raised £26,910 (+43% vs 2019)
-
We received £5,550 in grants and donations (three times more than in 2019).
-
From our surplus we donated £20,080 (+55% vs 2019) to local charities and organisations
After more than two years of lockdown, people were ready to venture out and celebrate locally – and the Festival 2022 met that need – in spades!
Financial Review
The 2022 Festival generated a surplus in excess of £20,000.
Reserves have been maintained at the opening value with all the surplus generated by the 2022 Festival distributed to local charities. The reason to hold reserves is to ensure prepublicity, bookings for professionals and venues can be made prior to ticket income being generated.
At 30 September 2022 reserves (balance carried forward) were £18.431.
Our results show that The Cookham Festival is a thriving and successful charity. The main Festival will take place again in May 2024.
The charity’s principal sources of funds are ticket sales, grants and donations.
To date, most events have been held indoors so weather has not been a risk factor. However, if this were to change to more outdoor events, inclement weather could become a major risk factor.
Structure, Governance and Management
The Cookham Festival is an unincoporated association, governed by a Trust Deed.
Trustees are appointed by a resolution of the trustees passed at a special meeting. New trustees are directed to Charity Commission website for more information.
Trustees appoint and constitute such advisory committees as they may think fit. They take strategic decisions and delegate responsibilities through a committee that assists with the management of the Festival and the Trust’s affairs.
