CHAIR OF TRUSTEES'STATEMENT l am delighted to introduce this Annual Report and Statement of Accounts on behalf of the trustees of Open Door Exmouth. It has been another busy year where, sadly, the demand for our services has risen significantly. However, support for Open Door has also risen hugely and we are genuinely in awe, and so grateful to our local community, for their heroic and generous support, donations, and volunteering. We also couldn't deliver our seNices without the many individuals and organisations who provide the funding to pay for our staff, facilities and seNices, and who keep the lights on and the doors open. A huge thank you to our small, fantastic team of staff who arejust amazing and also to our incredible team of volunteers. With 90+ volunteers freely giving an average of 334 hours each weel we could not make the differencewe do in Exmouth without them. Dianne Conduit The collective effort of our team and supporters means that Open Door remains at the heart of our community. Thank you for helping us to improve the lives of all those who visited our services and projects in 2023. I hope you enjoy reading about our achievements over the last year and some highlights coming in 2024. Celebrating some of our amazing volunteers at the heart of our community 05 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2023

TREASURER'S REPORT The year saw an increase in demand for the essential services at Open Door Exmouth. reflected in an increase in costs by 8% to £259,801. Thankfully, grants, donations and charitable trading income all increased, resulting in an income of £267,129, which was a 15% increase. This resulted in a surplus for the year of £7,328 reversing the loss of -£6,713 from 2022. There was also an investment of £3,791 in a new oven and new furniture for the café. which subsequently increased the fixed assets held on the balance sheet Open Door generated £53,697 of income from charitable activities, including £35.972 from drinks and meals sold in the café, and £9,992 from Men's Shed sales of restored tools and wooden items. The income generated from both projects was the highest we had ever seen. Project sales, however, are never enough to cover all the costs of running Open Door and providing services, so we remain grateful to all our donors. whether individuals. local churches, trusts. companies or local authority grants, who collectively gave £205,907, an increase of £27,749. Significantly, the amount of unrestricted donations and grants increased, and the restricted funds, which are for specific purposes, were largely spent fulfilling the conditions of the funding. For more information, please see the reseNes' statement in the notes section. Nicholasjackson Both kinds of funding are important and help Open Door to meet the needs of the community, however, the unrestricted funds give us greater flexibility and keep the organisation safe when times are financially hard, allowing our services to continue. Considering this, it was good to increase the unrestricted funds to £90,917 and decrease the restricted funds to £19.269. Although restricted funds are low, we received a funding commitment of just over £200,000 spread across four years from the National Lottery and, whilst this is restricted, it covers some core funding of the café and gives us scope to develop essential support services across the weel and open our doors every Saturday. £25,032 of this grant was paid in advance, increasing our cash in the bank to £133.084. Looking forward, we are aiming for an unrestricted fund of £140.000 to cover six months, expenditure, after which all of our money can be spent on charitable activities. However, we have set a budget for 2024 with a deficit of £12,000, so it will be hard to build up the reserves; nevertheless, we will aim to get to £100,000 of unrestricted funds by the end of the year. This is after putting money into Saturday moming opening of the café and using restricted funds to start a much needed Youth Café. We wanted to set a higher budget as the need is so great, but we have to manage within our resources. What helps us to do this is our team of 90+ volunteers who save us thousands of pounds by their generous personal support. Nevertheless. we need more financial SUPFX)rt to carry on with our existing and new services, support our volunt￿rS and modestly grow our reserves. As a charity founded on Christian values, demonstrating non-judgmental compassion across our services and projects on a daily basis, we hope you will consider supporting us into the future so that we can keep our doors open to those most in need. 06 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2023

The cost of Siving increase put a huge amount of pressure, both on individuals and on organisations like us. during 2023, as we did our very best to provide help and support to those most in need. We met with more people struggling with their physical and mental health, many in financial or housing crisis. and a significant increase in service users needing help with meals or food than ever before. The impact of increased need has most been felt by staff team leaders and our small team of volunteer support workers. We are grateful for the provision of funding from The National Lottery which means that, from 2024, we can further develop our support services and open the doors of our Community Hub permanently on Saturdays, to provide help, meals and practical support. 07 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2023

OPEN ￿DOOR Craft Room zi." During the first half of the year, we continued to provide a safe and creative space for Afghanistan refugees. The group, who called themselves 'Ariana' (referring to the first inhabitants of Afghanistan), arrived in Exmouth towards the end of 2021. We began supporting the women once per week from January 2022. During 2023, we welcomed a few new arrivals, but many families moved out of area. As the sessions drew to a close in the summer, we joined many others at Exeter Respect Festival where the women were given the opportunity to sell their handmade goods. In the autumn, we replaced 'Ariana' with a Craft Cafe. This attracted new participants from the town area,. we saw a particular increase in social prescribing and adults attending with support workers. We have developed a reputation for being safe and welcoming, especially to anyone experiencing social anxiety or having additional needs. Our outreach Craft Room continued to grow with many new participants becoming regulars. Early in 2023, 90 handmade butterflies and birds were distributed around Exmouth as 'random acts of kindness, gifts. We know our participants enjoy working together on community projects, where they can use their skills and 4@ / OF PEOPLE learn from others. Many more participants this year have been willing to share their creative skills, including macramé, feltwork and lantern-making. Beneficiaries from across both groups joined in with the local community at Christmas for the Exmouth Lantern Parade. In October we ran our first evening sewing workshop. Participants from the Craft Room vOlUnt￿red their time to share their skills. Attendees came with their own sewing machines and left with new confidence and skills. It has been amazing to see all our beneficiaries grow in confidence and make new friends overthe year. 1333 VISITS 41/ OF PEOPLE WHO ATTEND HAVE PHYSICAL HEALTH ISSUES WHO ATTEND ARE SOCIALLY ISOLATED 09 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2023

OPENkgDOOR Parent Hub Parent Hub Cafe continued to run every Thursday morning in 2023, providing a safe, friendly and supportive space to parents and their little ones. Alongside access to our Community Fridge, parents could access our Baby Bank which provided free clothes and nappies. Parents repeatedly shared with us how helpful it was to access both of these facilities during the cost of living crisis. With limited space to store baby items, we made numerous referrals to Exeter Baby Bank for larger items, including a pushchair, baby baths and maternity essentials for new mums. Although we offered a variety of activities available for pre-schoolers, we kept our focus on the parents, the majority of whom are struggling with family life. parenting. finances and/or their own mental health. We were regularly told by parents that the atmosphere was very different from toddler groups in the town. because everyone was so "friendly, welcoming and non-judgmental" We noticed that. although 1.1 support was available for parents, many of them preferred to chat about their needs and issues informally at the coffee bar. In February, we held a Time to Talk, session, encouraging parents to share their experiences of parenting. We made bread together, acknowledging that conversations are often easier shoulder-to- shoulder rather than face-to-face. In late spring and in partnership with the Action for Children, we 78 REPORTS OF delivered a series of Building Baby Brains workshops, which were very well attended. OPEN ￿DOOR Haven Haven continued to provide mental and emotional wellbeing support to young people at Exmouth Community College in 2023 through: 1.1 mentoring Lunchtime safe space'Hub' Enhanced Transition Sessions for very anxious Year 6 students preparing to transition to secondary school Twilight wellbeing group sessions for Year7 student& 1337 VISITS Haven saw a large number of referrals for students struggling with low self- esteem, friendships and home circumstances. There was also a rise in the number of young people with low school attendance and anger issues. We found that many of the young people wanted to set goals for increasing their confidence. The team supported young people in reaching their goals by setting small tasks for them in between their mentoring sessions. Haven used a variety of evidence-based activities and resources created by youth workers, psychologists and counsellors.100 / of students scored a minimum of one or more levels higher at the end of their mentoring sessions, in at least seven areas of the Warwick-Edinburgh Mental Wellbeing Scale. Words used by young people to describe their mentoring experience included: fun, relaxing, helpful and therapeutic, and those who attended the twilight group sessions described them as enjoyable, educational, friendly, amazing and interesting. 100 /0 of young people supported in 2023 said theywould recommend Haven toa friend. ONE-TO~ONE 71 Year 6 students from the local primary schools attended sessions focused on converting the anxiety of moving to the college into excitement into what was to come. This included a popular scavenger hunt around the college. Haven also took part in larger events at the college. including two Health and Wellbeing Fayres. Having surveyed 300 DELIVERED students at one of these fayres, we are launching a new Youth Cafe in 2024, providing a safe after-school space for11-18 year olds. 262 YOUNG PEOPLE RECEIVED MEANINGFUL SUPPORT 21@ MENTORING SESSIONS 11 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2023

OPEN￿DoOR Men's Shed Men's Shed has become a well-established shed in the Exmouth community, offering an abundance of tools and machinery for men to share skills and learn from each other. It also continues to be a safe environment for men to connect and socialise. Many of the attendees 28@4 VISITS tell us how appreciative they are of the social contact, especially those who live alone due to divorce or bereavement. Several men live with a partner who has a physical or mental illness and, in some cases, the men are struggling with ill health them*lves. In 2023, we sadly lost one of the Shed Leaders to cancer, which was a very difficult time for all. However, the men supported one another remarkably well during this time and they continue to do so as they share their own individual experiences and challenges with each other. The development of volunteer Shed Leaders in 2023 resulted in over 100 community projects being undertaken the highest ever. The EACH W EEK projects included restoring benches for a local pub and building our first ever tortoise house! The collaborative working is always a positive experience for the men and last year included the satisfaction of generating an income of nearly £10,000, which was an amazing achievement. The social element of Men's Shed developed further in 2023 with the initiation of regular Men's Breakfasts hosted by Raleigh Manor, a local care home. In addition, the Shed hosted two open days for the community to come and see the Shed in action, as well as providing an opportunity for visitors to purchase tools and items such as planters, bird boxes and chairs. Despite donations gratefully received of tools, some of the larger pieces of equipment at Men's Shed have seen better days. It is our hope in 2024 that we can generate enough funds to be able to replace key items that are essential to the community projects we undertake. 6@-7@ MEN ATTENDING OVER l@@ COMMUNITY PROJECTS COMPLETED 12 1 ANNUAL REPORT 2023
