1 Introduction
In the summer of 2020, MAT was scheduled to stage the world
premiere of a new play, Descent by David Calcutt and Sarah
Sayeed. Unfortunately, the pandemic intervened, and we had to
postpone the production. (It was finally staged in the summer
of 2021.)
Despite the difficult international situation, we have been able
to continue our work in different fields. This includes our
Erasmus Plus project on the Commission Model of teaching. MAT
is lead partner, with partners in Turkey, Portugal, Germany,
Poland and the UK. We also began a new Erasmus Plus project, on
Dorothy Heathcote’s “Rolling Role” model of education. MAT is
again project lead, with partners in Spain, Italy, Poland and
the UK.
We have been able to continue educational work through online
teaching. We completed our project, “One Area Through Time”
(funded by National Lottery Heritage Fund), and created an
online "virtual museum"; and we began a new project, “Dreaming
Museums,” with funding from Birmingham City Council. In both of
these projects, we were fortunate to be working closely with
Professor Carl Chinn.
During the pandemic, we have increased our presence and
activities online. We have extensively developed our websites
www.midlandactorstheatre.com and www.mantlenetwork.com. We have
also launched a Facebook group, The Commission Model of
Teaching, which is dedicated to the work of Dorothy Heathcote,
and serves as a forum for our Erasmus Plus projects. This has
raised our profile and helped us to develop more international
contacts; and it has also led to events such as an online
workshop on the Commission Model, presented by David Allen and
organised by London Drama and National Drama (October 2020).
In this period, many theatre companies have been forced to close,
even if only temporarily. We are pleased that we have been able
to continue to operate. The fact that MAT is active in a number
of different fields means that we have a solid basis to build
on, and can continue to grow, in spite of the current situation.

2 “One Area Through Time”
The project looked at the layers of immigration that can be
found in one area of Birmingham. We worked with groups of young
people in seven venues around Birmingham. There was a total of
a total of 173 participants. The project consultant was
Professor Carl Chinn.
Each project group undertook research into the history of a
particular community in Balsall Heath – for example: the Yemeni,
South Asian and African Caribbean communities; the impact of the
Blitz on Balsall Heath, and so on.
The coronavirus pandemic meant that plans for a public
exhibition had to be changed, and we focused instead on creating
a permanent online Virtual exhibition. We continued working with
project groups throughout the pandemic, through online
platforms.

3 Erasmus Plus: “The Commission Model of Teaching”
In October 2019, we began a new Erasmus Plus project on Dorothy
Heathcote’s Commission Model of Teaching. MAT is lead partner,
working with a range of other partners in Turkey, Portugal,
Germany, Poland and the UK.
We held a five-day training event for all partners at Woodrow
First School in March 2020. Unfortunately, the coronavirus
pandemic meant that, after the training event, partners
experienced limitations and difficulties in developing
Commission Model projects in their organisations.
However, MAT was able to develop a major project with Woodrow
First School and the Black Country Living Museum. The museum has
published resources online, called “History at Home,” to engage
young people at KS1 and KS2 in local history during lockdown.
Tom Dipple, the museum’s Programme Developer, commissioned
groups of young people to offer feedback on the resources, and
also produce their own “History at Home” resources, to
demonstrate their own ideas for materials that would engage the
target audience. The participating organisations were: Woodrow
First School, Redditch; George Dixon Academy, Birmingham;
Philology Department, University of Lodz
Materials have been published online and on the Facebook group,
The Commission Model of Teaching.
The Erasmus Plus project was originally scheduled to run for two

twelve-month extension.

4 Erasmus Plus: “Rolling Role”
In October 2020, we began a new Erasmus Plus project, on Dorothy
Heathcote’s Rolling Role method of teaching.
“Rolling Role” was originally designed by Dorothy Heathcote
particularly for use in secondary schools, as a way of addressing
the fragmentation of the school curriculum, breaking down the
walls between subject areas, and help students to see that
subjects have links with each other. In this system, a team of
teachers together develop a common “context” for a programme of
work. It is designed to meet their different curriculum areas
and teaching targets. The programme of work can then “roll” from
teacher to teacher; work produced by one class can be used as a
resource by another class.
Because of the pandemic, we were unable to hold a training week
for the project, as planned. However, we held a one-day training
session online.
At this event, we launched the idea of an online Rolling Role
project, based on the fictional towns of Stoney Bywell, UK, and
Veralia, Spain. Participants created materials around these
towns, and published them on the project website, using
“Thinglink.”
The following organisations took part, with input and support
from MAT: Woodrow First School, UK; Instituto de Educación
Secundaria Padre Juan de Mariana, Spain; Philology Dept.,
University of Lodz; Kates Hill Community Primary School.

5 Filming Descent and Exit
a. Descent
We were planning to stage a co-production (with Purbanat
Theatre) of Descent by David Calcutt & Sarah Sayeed, as a site-
specific piece at the Lampworks, Birmingham, in the summer 2020.
However, the production had to be postponed as a result of the
pandemic. It was finally staged in the Summer 2021.
In September 2020, we shot a trailer for Descent at the
Lampworks.

b. Exit
Exit is a new play on the theme of male suicide, written by
David Calcutt. It was originally designed as a community
project, with a volunteer cast. The tour, scheduled for April-
May 2020, was aimed at a general audience, as well as health
service users and professionals, etc. However, it had to be
cancelled because of the pandemic. We reworked the play as a
film, and it was shot at Lampworks in September 2020, with
Dominic Thompson in the lead role. The completed film will be
posted on the MAT website. The project is funded by Awards for
All.
6 “Dreaming Museums”
At the end of the current year, we began work on a new project
for schools, called Dreaming Museums.
There are three partner schools: Eden Girls’ Leadership Academy
(Balsall Heath); Ark Victoria Academy (Small Heath); Archbishop
Ilsley Catholic School (Acocks Green).
In each venue, groups will focus on a local museum or heritage
site (Moseley Road Baths; Aston Hall; and Blakesley Hall).
Participants will produce artwork inspired by the heritage site,
through drama, film, prop making, story writing, etc. Working
with schools as partners will make it possible for us to access
groups online.
The work participants produce will be featured in an online
“exhibition,” as a kind of “virtual museum.”
7 Website development and online activities
During the pandemic, we have increased our presence and
activities online. We have extensively developed our websites
www.midlandactorstheatre.com and www.mantlenetwork.com. And
created new materials for the website www.breaking-down-
barriers.org.
In 2020, we launched a Facebook group, The Commission Model of
Teaching, which is dedicated to the work of Dorothy Heathcote,
and serves as a forum for our Erasmus Plus projects. With daily
posts, the group quickly gained a strong following, rising to
1k+ in 2021. This has raised our profile and helped us to develop

more international contacts; and it has also led to events such
as an online workshop on the Commission Model, presented by
David Allen and organised by London Drama and National Drama
(October 2020).
8 Future Plans
Our future plans include:

new local history projects for schools, funded by Birmingham City Council and the National Lottery Heritage Fund -
an international conference,Dorothy Heathcote Now, slated for October 2021 (to make the 10[th] anniversary of Dorothy’s death)
9 Funding
In 2020-21, we received funding from National Lottery Heritage
Fund, the British Council (Erasmus Plus) and Birmingham City
Council.
There was also project funding from Arts Council England, Awards
for All, and the British Council (Erasmus Plus) which was carried
over from previous years.
There was an overall reduction in non-grant income, as a result
of the pandemic.
