As a tJirect consequence of these actions, we have had lo cancel I postpone nL*merous events because il would not have been possible for us to hold these events in a socially distanced manner. CHAIRMAN'S REPORT FOR THE YEAR ENDED 31 MARCH 2021 This has beèn the most unusual and challenging year in the 25-year history ofthe Charity. Even al ils commencement, no one could have p￿dICted the impact whi¢h the emergence of Cowd 19 wou5d have on our daity lives and h¢n¢e the fund-raising ability of our chaflty. Frtends of Sussex Hospi¢es has striven lo uphold the oblectwes of the Charity throughout Ihiy lime, and thanks lo a iesilienl band of v(Jlunleers and supporters, has continued lo raise money lo support the provision of Hospice Care lo the people of Sussex, by ¢onlributing tr) 13 Hospices and Hospice Care providers across the County of East and Wesl Sussex. The ￿}n aim5 of raising awareness of these sefwces and their need for public support has been thrown into even sharper focus as the Hospices themselves struggled lo survive financialty and lo iise lo the challenge of extended and exienuated demand for their services. In September 2020 our long serving Chaim8n, Kathy Gore, announced her intention to step down from the Chairmanship of the Charity in March 2021 and from her role as Trustee thereafter. In the event, Kathy served until the December Board meeting in order lo albw for some succession planning and the Chairmanship wa5 taken on in an interim capauty by fellow Trustee, Christine Fidd. During the year both Eddie A￿enhoven and lan Goug completed their temis as Trustees. Along wlh Kathy. they agreed lo delay thei¥ departure until June 2021 to assist with a longer-term review of the Charity. FSH is immensely grateful to all 3 for the contributions that they have made to the succes5 of the Charity anLI eS￿l311Y lo Kathy Gore, with whose name the Charity, and ils success, a virtually synonymous. As if to echo this. the largest single ￿nd-raIsIng contribution of the year came trtsm Kathy. During the rnonths of lockdown, she undertook a complete solo circumnavigation of the Hospice Trail - over 200 miles around the County. This produced £40,000 in sponsorship and donations and attracted significant Press and social media coverage. The Board of Trustees ha5 mel regularfy during the period and took an early decision lo cease face lo face fund. raising events as the de9￿& of the impact which the Covid pandemic would have on our lives. began lo become clear. In a complete change of directs'on for the charity, two online events were devised and produced, the first Bridge Bidding Quiz an(f the second an adaptation of the long-running Mega March Hospice Quiz. Together these raised approximately £8,000. The latter was a joint venture Mth the 13 Hospices who also raised funds LI1￿¢￿Y from the event. Special efforts have been made lo keep people In touch with the progress of the Charity during the year. The volunteer base of over200 people rel+es heavily on those in the demographic groups most impacted by the pandemic. The effect that this will have on our ability to return lo fomer pattems of fvnd-rai5ing remains lo be Seen. Despi(e the absence of tradil¢onal fund-raising for much of the time covered by thi$ report, a total of £159,733 has been raised enabling us lo distribute £130,000 lo the Hospices during the year. Over 50°k of this total has come in the form of grants, donations and In Memoriam ¢onlribution$ from individuals. groups and Twsts. This has revealed a significant and wide-ranging body of support for the Charity throughout the County of Sussex, which the Trustees have endeavoured to acknowledge and Celebrate through internal and extemal ¢ommuni¢alion5. It seems fair lo say that this serves as testament to the role which the Charity plays within the commL*nty. The Trustees have taken advantage of the absence of regular fund-¥aising activity and changes in membership, lo review and enhance the Governance of the Charty, putting in place a full 5Urte of pol￿1¢$ and procedures through which the Charity Can contsnue lo develop in a sustained and secure manner. 11 been a challenging year bul one trom which Friends of Sussex Hospi￿$ has sought lo draw positives and above all, I would wish lo express my thanks to my fellow Trustees and all our supporters for their continued generos and the effo hich they have made to secure the charty's fLFiure in these extraorllinary limes.
