Summary of the
purposes of the charity
as set out in its
governing document
Para 1.17 Bonymaen Kids Play Initiative
provides good quality afordable
play and childcare facilities for
the children and parents of
Bonymaen. We provide a play
environment which builds the
self-respect and confdence of
children and where children feel
safe, secure and free to
participate and have fun. We
promote social inclusion by
working with over 300 children
per year, aged 3 -16 over 11
schools and reduce the risk of
disafection by promoting a
caring and trusting atmosphere
which enhances the children’s
confdence and self-esteem.

Contribution made by
volunteers
Para 1.38 The 3 parents on our
management committee, have
worked hard with the staf to
continue the work of BKPI during
another difcult fnancial year and
encouraged other parents and
community members to get
involved with fundraising and
various events.
10 Local volunteers/parents made
contribution to funding this year
by donating food, equipment and
money.
20 young volunteers aged 13 to
16 have really added to the
younger children’s enjoyment of
both playscheme and afterschool
club, by encouraging them to join
in all the various games and
competitions they ran. 5 of them
have been fully involved and
essential in the running of our
activities providing help with the
cleaning, cooking, as well as
preparation and planning.
20 Parents and community
volunteers also supported us to
build costumes and take part in
the Swansea Christmas parade
Other Staf have volunteered to run
various fundraising activities,
such as sponsored walks, bucket
collecting in supermarkets and
rafes. As well as giving many
free hours to supporting the

running of B.K.P.I. We had 3 curry nights this year. It’s a good way to socialise with parents and supporters of B.K.P.I and raise money. This has become a favourite with our adults.

Achievements and Performance

SORP
reference
Summary of the main
achievements of the
charity, identifying the
diference the charity’s
work has made to the
circumstances of its
benefciaries and any
wider benefts to
society as a whole.
Para 1.20 Over the last year we have seen a
higher intake for new children
during our playschemes we ofer.
During term time our number is
consistent. This means that
Bonymaen Kids Play Initiative has
worked hard to make connections
with new children, so they feel safe
on confdent to attend future
sessions. Our numbers show we
have been able to achieve this.
We’ve also been able to continue to
work to help the children gain the
social skills, confdence and play
opportunities they really need.
This year we have been able to
secure some grant funding and
have fnished the year in a good
fnancial position. But
unfortunately we struggling early
spring to fnd or secure funding.
We have worked with;
310 children and young people
aged between 5 and 16 years old.
40% of these are new children.

These children have
benefted by having up to
2hrs of outdoor physical play
per session, helping them to
increase self-esteem, self-
confdence, social interaction,
emotional wellbeing, keep ft,
stimulate brain development
Access to arts and crafts has
helped them to express
themselves through creating
art of their choice. This
quieter activity also gives the
children the chance to talk
about their day and any
worries they may have. This
builds security and trust with
the children knowing they are
listened to; it gives them a
sense of belonging.
Loose parts play has helped
our children to problem solve
and work together in teams.
It increases their
communication and
friendships.
20 young volunteers
supported to gain valuable
leadership, social skills, life
and work skills and build
their self-esteem.
We started our trainee Young
Volunteer group and worked
with 8 children 10+ on how
they can start to help so they
can be young volunteers.

45% of our children have ALN or on the pathway and they were supported so they were able to play with their peers, improve their social skills, wellbeing and confidence.

Supported 30 local families with affordable childcare.

45 children and young people participated in staff recruitment sessions various playscheme planning sessions

One of our highlights this year was

our 6-week programme of activities this summer. We had recruitment training and staff training during the last couple of weeks of term as we went straight into summer playscheme. We offered 3 full days of playscheme and 1 trip per week. This meant we provided: 120 hours of play opportunities 120 hours of low-cost childcare 1,500 hot meals 2,000 snacks And worked with over 76 children each day so over 304 children got to enjoy play experiences each week. We asked the children for their ideas of activities, meals and trips. For the children to enjoy their time it’s important they have their say, so they feel valued

We had many positive comments from parents and children and community from this summer’s scheme Including:

“Can’t thank you all enough for running the summer playscheme my 4 really enjoyed it. I enjoyed too! Together with the Afterschool club too. You’re a god send” C.T foster parent “I’ve never been so grateful my girls have had the best time, enjoyed trips and had good food and love all the activities, which has helped me with work. Saved us all the money to do

other activities as a break when needed from each other in a well trusted caring environment” N.C.

“Well done for giving these children a lovely day by the sea” P.R

“B.K.P.I I take my hat off to you leaders for giving the children a lovely day at the beach. Love Oxwich many happy memories of outings with my family.” L.A

Our other highlight this year we were able for the first time since 2019 to secure funding from YHA for a 2-night 3 day residential. The funding paid for accommodation and food in a hostel in

Brecon Beacons. We also secured funding from Arnold Clark Arnold who funded the bus and activities. The activities were provided by Black Mountain activity centre where the kids go to try the high ropes, archery and zip wire. For most of the children we took it was their first time away, so they were anxious, but they all did really well and attempted the activities. Parents and staff were very proud of them. Staff and volunteers at youth hostel were impressed by how the children communicated to the adults as they aren’t used to it and said it was nice to interact with our group.

We have continued to work with our connections we made last year – Swansea Play service, Cefn Hengoed, Street Games, Kilvey Woodland Volunteers, Friends of Margam Park, Uniquely Yours by Rhi, PCSO’s, Swansea Libraries, Sport and Health Swansea, the orchard project & Swansea community buildings and Everyone Deserves a Christmas. Continuing these connections means we were able to offer new and extended opportunities, and our

Facebook profle has stayed
visible and reached new
families which helps us
increase our numbers
throughout the year again.
Keeping Facebook updated
has become an important role
as it’s how we reach most of
our families and new ones,
photos really help us
showcase the hard work we
really do and the benefts of
play.

We also made a couple of
new connections this year –
crazy characters donated a
bouncy castle a couple of
times and a disco, Bug life –
The Invertebrate
Conservation trust taught us
about the bugs around us and
what role they play, Admiral
came out to help staf &
community groups paint the
main hall in the centre. The
kids loved the new colour and
so did the families.

Our connection with street
games meant we were
ofered spaces to Gareth Bale
festival of sport in Newport.
We took 11 Young Volunteers
by train which was a frst
experience for some of our
kids, to Newport where they
took part in a range of sports.
They got to meet Gareth Bale
and play sports with him and
came home with a signed T-
Shirt and a goody bag.

One of our Young Volunteers
also volunteers at the
Swansea stadium, and we
made connections with the
Swans football staf. He was
able to organise a visit from
their ambassador Lee Trundle
who came up to meet the
children, sign autographs,
play games with the kids and
take pictures with the kids.
He was impressed by what we
did, and the kids enjoyed
meeting him. This Young
Volunteer also completed his
induction to Playwork this
year and we are very proud of

finishing with a big trip to Dinosaur park which was a big hit the previous year. With regular walks up Kilvey hill and to Bonymaen park to play games, climb trees, play in puddles and roll down the bank. In the centre the children took part in wide range of activities, such as sports, cooking, arts and craft, role play, Lego and loads of freely chosen play. If we hadn’t had the COAST funding, Nourish the nation and Holiday food fund and the extra staff we wouldn’t have been able to take on extra children or be able to take advantage of preparing, cooking and serving hot freshly cooked meals for all children and staff which is a lot now as our numbers have risen. It still is a lot of work, but the kids and families are so grateful as they know they will be getting a snack and a meal. It also takes the stress away from families and staff having to provide lunch and made the summer more affordable for them. We also did a lot of outdoor cooking and the kids really enjoyed and it made lunchtime less hectic.
