Additional details of objectives and activities (Optional information)

Revenue received for corporate sponsorship contributed £121,320 (April 2021March 2022). This re-enforces the support by pharma for the work that the UKMF undertakes. The Autumn Day was held on 11[th] November 2021, as a hybrid meeting at the Cavendish Conference Centre and accessed on a virtual platform. Prof. Davies presented the Michael Morley Lecture on ‘My current approach relevant, about: to sequencing therapy in myeloma and how this can be refined with personalised • policy on grantmaking; therapy’.

The Spring Day was also a virtual meeting and was held on 16[th] March 2022. The theme for this meeting was the, ‘Relapsed Myeloma and the Impact of Covid-19’. The plenary lecture was given by Dr Vincent Rajkumer from the Mayo Clinic in Rochester. His talk was entitled, ‘How I treat relapsed myeloma: a global perspective’.

A total of eight travel grants for scientific conferences were awarded in 2021 to winning abstracts. Three bursaries of £140 each to EHA Virtual in June 2021 . The EHA abstracts were presented at the Autumn Day in November 2021. Five bursaries of £450 covered the registration fee for ASH (American Society of Haematology Annual Meeting). The ASH abstracts were presented at the Spring Day in March 2022. A review of ASH was produced in the e-newsletter.

Travel grants for scientific meetings The UKMF awarded a number of bursaries in 2021-22 at EHA Virtual in June 2021 and ASH Atlanta (American Society of Haematology Meeting) in December 2021. The UKMF members have continued to engage with the NICE technology appraisals both in newly diagnosed and relapsed myeloma. Members of the UKMF also help develop NICE clinical guidelines and more recently input into NHS England Algorithm.

The Guidelines group

The UKMF Guidelines Group, Chaired by Dr Simon Stern remained active despite the difficulties caused by the Covid-19 pandemic, good progress had been made on the development of 2 new separate sets of guidelines on the management of both newly diagnosed and relapsed multiple myeloma.

A full first draft of the newly diagnosed guidelines had been reviewed by the BSH Haemato-oncology Task Force and BSH Guidelines Committee. A first full draft of the relapsed guidelines was near completion.

In addition, writing groups had been set up with a view to producing Good Practice Papers (GPPs) on the diagnosis and management of both MGUS and MGRS.

UKMRA - UK Myeloma Research Alliance

The vision of the UKMRA, Chaired by Dr Rakesh Popat is that all myeloma research is discussed within this forum to allow co-ordination of ideas and further development into national trials to maximise impact. The group meet virtually twice a year with one face to face meeting planned at the Wellcome Collection on 15[th] June 22.

Myeloma Nurse Group

The nurse group, Chaired by Sarah Henshaw plan to do a best practice guide for Peripheral Neuropathy and an audit of the positive aspect that have come out of Covid for nurses in hospitals. The group are also working with Myeloma UK to update and review the nurse guidelines.

Myeloma Pharmacy Group

The Pharmacy group, Chaired by Andrea Preston was newly established in 2021 and launched at the Spring Day in March 22. The Group will promote excellence in the pharmaceutical care of patients with myeloma and support, develop and encourage haematology pharmacists to undertake high quality, audit and research aligned with the UKMF work-plan, and aim to standardise clinical practice across the UK. There are 11 core members.

College of Myeloma (UK)

Created in 2019, the College of Myeloma (UK) consists of elected fellows representing those who have contributed significantly to the work of the UKMF and to patients with Myeloma through medical science, education and clinical care.

Education Grants from Corporate Sponsors contributed £121,320, April 2021 - March 2022.

The Michael Morley Fund

This fund is a charitable donation from a patient’s estate that is invested on behalf of the UKMF and the interest may be used towards certain projects including supporting two Michael Morley lectures per annum. See section D for further details).

Administrative costs (covering Executive meetings and associated expenses and the salary and on-costs of our Administrative Secretary, accountants’ fees, employer’s liability insurance and teleconferencing).

TO THE TRUSTEES OF UK MYELOMA FORUM

I report to the trustees on my examination of the financial statements of UK Myeloma Forum (the charity) for the year ended 31 March 2022.

Responsibilities and basis of report

As the trustees of the charity you are responsible for the preparation of the financial statements in accordance with the requirements of the Charities Act 2011 (the 2011 Act).

I report in respect of my examination of the charity’s financial statements carried out under section 145 of the 2011 Act. In carrying out my examination I have followed all the applicable Directions given by the Charity Commission under section 145(5)(b) of the 2011 Act.

Independent examiner's statement

Your attention is drawn to the fact that the charity has prepared financial statements in accordance with Accounting and Reporting by Charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102) in preference to the Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice issued on 1 April 2005 which is referred to in the extant regulations but has now been withdrawn.

I understand that this has been done in order for financial statements to provide a true and fair view in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Practice effective for reporting periods beginning on or after 1 January 2015.

1 Accounting policies

Charity information

UK Myeloma Forum is a charity registered in England and Wales and is governed by its constitution. The Charity meets the defination of a public benefit entity under FRS 102. The registered office is Department of Haematology, Royal Bournemouth Hospital, Bournemouth, Dorset, BH14 9QN

1.1 Accounting convention

The accounts have been prepared in accordance with the charity's constitution, the Charities Act 2011 and “Accounting and Reporting by Charities: Statement of Recommended Practice applicable to charities preparing their accounts in accordance with the Financial Reporting Standard applicable in the UK and Republic of Ireland (FRS 102)” (effective from 1 January 2019). The charity is a Public Benefit Entity as defined by FRS 102.

The charity has taken advantage of the provisions in the SORP for charities applying FRS 102 Update Bulletin 1 not to prepare a Statement of Cash Flows.

The financial statements are prepared in sterling, which is the functional currency of the charity. Monetary amounts in these financial statements are rounded to the nearest £.

The financial statements have been prepared under the historical cost convention, modified to include certain financial instruments at fair value. The principal accounting policies adopted are set out below.

1.2 Going concern

At the time of approving the financial statements, the trustees have a reasonable expectation that the charity has adequate resources to continue in operational existence for the foreseeable future. Thus the trustees continue to adopt the going concern basis of accounting in preparing the financial statements.

1.3 Charitable funds

Unrestricted funds are available for use at the discretion of the trustees in furtherance of their charitable objectives.

1.4 Incoming resources

Income is recognised when the charity is legally entitled to it after any performance conditions have been met, the amounts can be measured reliably, and it is probable that income will be received.

Cash donations are recognised on receipt. Other donations are recognised once the charity has been notified of the donation, unless performance conditions require deferral of the amount. Income tax recoverable in relation to donations received under Gift Aid or deeds of covenant is recognised at the time of the donation.

Dividends arising on equity investments are accounted for in the year they are due and receivable.

Interest receivable on fixed interest securities and cash deposits is accrued.

1.5 Resources expended

Liabilities are recognised as expenditure once there is a legal or constructive obligation committing the charity to that expenditure, it is probable that settlement will be required and the amount of the obligation can be measured reliably.

The costs of generating funds consist of investment management fees.

Governance costs comprise all costs involving the public accountability of the charity and its compliance with regulation and good practice.

All expenditure is accounted for on an accruals basis. All expenses, including support costs and governance costs, are allocated to the one charitable activity in the statement of financial activities.

Irrecoverable VAT is charged against the expenditure heading for which it was incurred.

1.6 Fixed asset investments

Fixed asset investments are initially measured at transaction price excluding transaction costs, and are subsequently measured at fair value at each reporting date. Changes in fair value are recognised in net income/(expenditure) for the year. Transaction costs are expensed as incurred.

1.7 Financial instruments

The charity only has financial assets and financial liabilities of a kind that qualify as basic financial instruments. Basic financial instruments are initially recognised at transaction value and subsequently measured at their settlement value, with the exception of bank loans which are subsequently measured at amortised cost using the effective interest method.

1.8 Employee benefits

The cost of any unused holiday entitlement is recognised in the period in which the employee’s services are received.

Termination benefits are recognised immediately as an expense when the charity is demonstrably committed to terminate the employment of an employee or to provide termination benefits.

1.9 Retirement benefits

Payments to defined contribution retirement benefit schemes are charged as an expense as they fall due.

2 Critical accounting estimates and judgements

In the application of the charity’s accounting policies, the trustees are required to make judgements, estimates and assumptions about the carrying amount of assets and liabilities that are not readily apparent from other sources. The estimates and associated assumptions are based on historical experience and other factors that are considered to be relevant. Actual results may differ from these estimates.

The estimates and underlying assumptions are reviewed on an ongoing basis. Revisions to accounting estimates are recognised in the period in which the estimate is revised where the revision affects only that period, or in the period of the revision and future periods where the revision affects both current and future periods.

The trustees do not consider there to be any critical accounting estimates or judgements applied in the preparation of the financial statements.
