| 5. 2023 report | 28 January 2023 7.30pm Witches and Wizards conductor Paul Witkiewicz Supported by Fieldings Porter Antonín Dvořák The Noon Witch Edvard Grieg Peer Gynt Suite No 1 Manuel de Falla Ritual Fire Dance Hector Berlioz Symphonie Fantastique (mov’t V) Interval Modest Mussorgsky Night on the Bare Mountain Gustav Holst The Perfect Fool Paul Dukas The Sorcerer’s Apprentice Igor Stravinsky Movements from The Firebird The opening concert of 2023 was a brew of sorcery. The programme comprised well-known and less familiar offerings. On the surface, programmes like this appear straightforward. However, beneath the familiar titles with wonderful melodies and stories, lie significant technical challenges for the orchestra. It was fantastic to pull off such a difficult programme with great aplomb. A very appreciative audience enjoyed a spell binding performance. 11March 2023 3.00pm Once Upon a Time conductor Ben Crick, solo tuba Andy Wyatt, narrator Beth Singh Supported by Friends of BSO and Bolton Operatic Society Trust Aaron Copland Buckaroo Holiday Sergei Prokofiev Peter and the Wolf Interval George Kleinsinger Tubby the Tuba Lin Marsh Once Upon A Time Aaron Copland Hoe-Down This matinee concert had, in addition to the excellent children’s choirs, 2 stars: Andy Wyatt and Beth Singh. Andy’s account of Tubby the Tuba was utterly amazing and, with Beth Singh’s narration, really brought out the character of the work. Beth Singh’s telling of Peter and the Wolf was equally memorable, with orchestral solos from our excellent wind and brass sections, and the strings taking the role of Peter. We were joined by young musicians from 5 primary schools, led by Carolyn Baxendale, for “Once Upon a Time.” Our young performers clearly savoured the opportunity to see and perform with a symphony orchestra – and they sang beautifully too. The concert was book-ended by two works by the American composer, Aaron Copland. |

We joined forces with the BCMCS Choral and the BMS Singers for a semi-staged performance of Carmen. The choirs sounded fantastic and we are very grateful to Carolyn Baxendale, Jane Hampson and Jeanette Winstanley. Georgina Crowe’s Carmen was thrilling, and Bizet’s familiar music was well-received by the audience.

| Ludwig van Beethoven Symphony No 6“Pastoral” |
This was a programme full of interesting repertoire and provided the opportunity for some of our members to shine. The Creston Fantasy, played by BSO’s own Alastair Burrows, was new to most of the orchestra, and it was lovely to see him at the front of the orchestra to produce his tromboning fireworks. Quiet City is an atmospheric work which was beautifully performed by Mark Jones and Nikki Lord. The Chabrier was delightful, with some memorable melodies, and worked well as an accompaniment to Beethoven’s wonderful Pastoral symphony.

| We were lucky to perform Ethiopia’s Shadow in America by Florence Price, which was new to most of the orchestra. The work is beautiful and was thoroughly enjoyed by our audience. The Tchaikovsky symphony was thrilling and more familiar, but the real treat was to have Anita play the Dvorak violin concerto. Here’s to her next concerto solo with us! |

| Saturday 25th November 2023 7:30pm England Four Ways, conductor Paul Witkiewicz, solo flute Julie Leach Sponsored by Friends of Bolton Symphony Orchestra and Schofield & Sons Building Contractors Ralph Vaughan Williams Overture - The Wasps John Rutter Suite Antique Sir Arnold Bax Tintagel Interval Sir Malcolm Arnold Symphony No 2 November was a varied and interesting programme of British Music including some rarely heard music by Rutter and Malcolm Arnold. Vaughan Williams’ Wasps is wonderfully descriptive, and Tintagel by Bax beautifully depicts the Cornish village and the crashing sea. Suite Antique an opportunity to enjoy another BSO stalwart playing solo; this time Julie Leach wooed us with her playing in this Suite by John Rutter. Malcolm Arnold symphonies are rarely heard, so it was great to have the opportunity to perform his 2nd Symphony. We look forward toperformingmore works byArnold in the future. We are extremely grateful to Stephen Leach for his work designing and building the large wooden blocks that allow us to have our percussion section at the back of the Orchestra, giving us much more room for the strings on stage. This has long been something we wanted, and it has only been possible through Stephen’s skill, thoughtfulness and generosity. Thank you Stephen. |

| 6. 2023 Accounts and Treasurer’s report |
(See full accounts attached separately) Thanks to Julie Leach for taking up the role of treasurer and thanks to David for his support for Julie. Julie guided the meeting through the accounts statements in detail. David is currently working on a formal reserves policy. The charity is in a reasonably sound financial provision, in part due to the tax relief we are able to claim. Julie shared David’s review of our financial position. Full accounts are attached separately; these were emailed to all members prior to the meeting Julie shared that it has been a good year for collection of subs, up considerably from 2022. Thanks expressed to Hilary for her work in this area and to all those members who have paid their subs. Julie thanked all the sponsors of the orchestra, particularly the Friends, Fielding Porter, Provincial Trust, Schofield and Sons and Foster Care Charity, Bolton Operatic Society Trust and an anonymous private donor. There were no questions raised in the meeting. The committee will be noting any changes made by the new government in respect of orchestral tax relief. |

- Friends Association FBSO REPORT FOR BSO AGM 2024 report
For the year of 2023
Our membership remained steady at around 75 members In March we held an ‘Evening of Elgar’ at St. Luke’s Church when we heard Chamber music performed by members of the wind section of BSO and also had a talk from a member of the Elgar Society. It was a very enjoyable event and raised £260 for our funds. This was followed in October by an evening of French music with cheese and wine in the interval and was a very successful evening with the French theme giving it all a buzz and atmosphere. After expenses we raised £230 and we hope to repeat the cheese and wine interval at future concerts. A big thank you to all the players who put so much time into learning and rehearsing works for both these concerts. We have settled into using St. Luke’s Church as our concert venue now as the Triangle Church has limited availability. We are finding it very suitable. We also had 2 non musical get togethers namely our restaurant meal in August and a Christmas coffee morning at Heaton Coffee Shop. A small number of Friends attend these but it is a good way of getting to know some of our members. Our committee consists of myself as secretary, Juliette Bradbury as treasurer and membership secretary, Jean Howarth and, towards the end of the year, we welcomed Victor Williams who volunteered to join us. We would like to especially thank Nikki Lord for her help in arranging concerts, publicising them on social media and designing flyers for them. Thank you also to Mark Jones who continues to list the names of the Friends in the programmes. In 2023 we sponsored the March, September and November concerts for £500 each, making a total of £1500 and we are very pleased to support the BSO in this way. We continue to provide front of house duties at concerts. We would like to increase our membership, especially younger members and hope that the increased social media presence might lead to this. Sarah shared a message from Ben in which he congratulated the orchestra for the Mahler’s 5th Symphony - Ben shared that it was a special concert to be part of and that he felt a great deal of pride in the orchestra. It was noted that the programme for this year includes more opera, the Masquerade Suite, a Star Trek piece, Bruckner 5, Scherazade, and Sibelius’ 2nd Symphony; these were all suggestions from members of the orchestra. Due to the success of the afternoon concert, the February, March and November concerts will take place in the afternoon as a trial this year There will be a whole day rehearsal for the September Bruckner concert following on from the successful trial of the Mahler rehearsal day Aprogramme to celebrate the 125th anniversaryof theVictoria Hall has been created;this includes usingmusic from the |

| Light Music Society which now has its home at the Victoria Hall The BCMCS will be joining us again this year in May Nikki reminded members that they can share any programming ideas with members of the committee for the 2026 season. Publicity will be shared as soon as possible. The committee is continuing to explore the possibility of working with local school choirs or orchestras |
|
|---|---|
| 10. Safeguarding | The committee has expanded, improved, and updated the orchestra’s safeguarding policy. Particular thanks to Mark for his work on the policy and Nikki who has taken on the role as safeguarding lead with Sarah as safeguarding deputy. Nikki reminded members to contact her or Sarah with any concerns. It was suggested that this be shared by email. It was also announced at the Sunday rehearsal. It was agreed the information about safeguarding leads should be shared frequently duringthe course of the season |
| 11. AOB | Nikki wanted to express thanks to Jane Mann who continues to support the committee, especially with her persistence in contacting local councillors Nikki requested support for managing social media; this does not have to be a huge amount of time, but increased social media presence would be beneficial to the orchestra. The aim of social media is to attract new audience members and help with this would be gratefully received Nikki also shared that the Friends are looking for ideas for their informal concerts. Please share any ideas with Nikki One member asked to record thanks to the wind and brass session for their patience and their working together in somewhat cramped conditions in the Victoria Hall Some concerns were shared by members regarding the suitability of the Victoria Hall in terms of accessibility, parking, and the large capacity of the hall. Stephen stated that the committee will discuss this. Sarah thanked the orchestra for their kind welcome to the Our Pass group who attended a rehearsal for the September concert. Appreciation was expressed for the afternoon concert timings. It was also shared that a word from the conductor has also been appreciated by members of the audience; the committee has been experimenting with this idea and will continue to do so. It was suggested that some concerts might benefit from an encore. Thanks were expressed to Ben, Paul, Anita and the entire committee for all their work in making the orchestra successful Stephen closed the meeting by thanking members for joining the meeting. The AGM will take place earlier in the year next year and will be in person rather than online. |
