The programme comprised well-known and less familiar offerings.
On the surface, programmes like this appear straightforward. However, beneath the familiar titles with wonderful
melodies and stories, lie significant technical challenges for the orchestra. It was fantastic to pull off such a difficult
programme with great aplomb. Andy’s
account of Tubby the Tuba was utterly amazing and, with Beth Singh’s narration, really brought out the character of the
work. Beth Singh’s telling of Peter and the Wolf was equally memorable, with orchestral solos from our excellent wind
and brass sections, and the strings taking the role of Peter. We were joined by young musicians from 5 primary schools,
led by Carolyn Baxendale, for “Once Upon a Time.” Our young performers clearly savoured the opportunity to see and
perform with a symphony orchestra – and they sang beautifully too. The concert was book-ended by two works by the
American composer, Aaron Copland.|

We joined forces with the BCMCS Choral and the BMS Singers for a semi-staged performance of Carmen. The choirs sounded fantastic and we are very grateful to Carolyn Baxendale, Jane Hampson and Jeanette Winstanley. Georgina Crowe’s Carmen was thrilling, and Bizet’s familiar music was well-received by the audience.

This was a programme full of interesting repertoire and provided the opportunity for some of our members to shine. The Creston Fantasy, played by BSO’s own Alastair Burrows, was new to most of the orchestra, and it was lovely to see him at the front of the orchestra to produce his tromboning fireworks. Quiet City is an atmospheric work which was beautifully performed by Mark Jones and Nikki Lord. The Chabrier was delightful, with some memorable melodies, and worked well as an accompaniment to Beethoven’s wonderful Pastoral symphony.

|We were lucky to perform Ethiopia’s Shadow in America by Florence Price, which was new to most of the orchestra. The
work is beautiful and was thoroughly enjoyed by our audience. The Tchaikovsky symphony was thrilling and more
familiar, but the real treat was to have Anita play the Dvorak violin concerto. Here’s to her next concerto solo with us!||

> 7. Friends Association **FBSO REPORT FOR BSO AGM 2024** report

## **For the year of 2023**

Our membership remained steady at around 75 members In March we held an ‘Evening of Elgar’ at St. Luke’s Church when we heard Chamber music performed by members of the wind section of BSO and also had a talk from a member of the Elgar Society. It was a very enjoyable event and raised £260 for our funds. This was followed in October by an evening of French music with cheese and wine in the interval and was a very successful evening with the French theme giving it all a buzz and atmosphere. After expenses we raised £230 and we hope to repeat the cheese and wine interval at future concerts. A big thank you to all the players who put so much time into learning and rehearsing works for both these concerts. We have settled into using St. Luke’s Church as our concert venue now as the Triangle Church has limited availability. We are finding it very suitable. We also had 2 non musical get togethers namely our restaurant meal in August and a Christmas coffee morning at Heaton Coffee Shop. A small number of Friends attend these but it is a good way of getting to know some of our members. Our committee consists of myself as secretary, Juliette Bradbury as treasurer and membership secretary, Jean Howarth and, towards the end of the year, we welcomed Victor Williams who volunteered to join us. We would like to especially thank Nikki Lord for her help in arranging concerts, publicising them on social media and designing flyers for them. Thank you also to Mark Jones who continues to list the names of the Friends in the programmes. In 2023 we sponsored the March, September and November concerts for £500 each, making a total of £1500 and we are very pleased to support the BSO in this way. We continue to provide front of house duties at concerts. We would like to increase our membership, especially younger members and hope that the increased social media presence might lead to this. AOB|Nikki wanted to express thanks to Jane Mann who continues to support the committee, especially with her persistence in
contacting local councillors
Nikki requested support for managing social media; this does not have to be a huge amount of time, but increased social
media presence would be beneficial to the orchestra. Stephen stated that the committee will discuss this.
Sarah thanked the orchestra for their kind welcome to the Our Pass group who attended a rehearsal for the September concert.
Appreciation was expressed for the afternoon concert timings. It was also shared that a word from the conductor has also
been appreciated by members of the audience; the committee has been experimenting with this idea and will continue to do
so. It was suggested that some concerts might benefit from an encore.
Thanks were expressed to Ben, Paul, Anita and the entire committee for all their work in making the orchestra successful
Stephen closed the meeting by thanking members for joining the meeting. The AGM will take place earlier in the year next
year and will be in person rather than online.|
