Sheffleld, In 5ettlng the objectives and plannlng the actlvltle5 the Trustees have 8lven careful con5ider?tlon to the Charitv Commlsslon'5 general guldance on public benefit. Achlevements and Performance durlng the Flnanclal year In Summer 2021 Covid restrictions were progressively lifted and activities picked up, but no 2020 Christma5 Fair or 2021 Easter duck race. However substantial progress wa5 made throughout the year on our key projects.. Forge Dam improvement, Festival of Brltaln arboretum above Forge Dam, and Blngham Park. Mem ershl of FOPV: Member numbers were up at 720 in September 2021 ammunlcatlons Webslte and other IT develo ments: We continued to make Increasln8 use of social media, and vlrtual meetlngs. Four Newsletters went out electronl¢ally and members received addltlonal mid quarter updates about latest developments. For e Dam Restoratlon: An anonymous donation in autumn 2020 was a game changer.. the restoratlon could now be progressed, after having been fundralslng slnce 2014. £263,047 was transferred to the Council In spring 2021 and our Project Officer used this as matched funding in a bid for a DEFRA Green Recovery grant. It was successful- the council have secured an addltional £247,700 from the Government's Green Recovery Challer)ge Fund directly towards the project and will also contrlbute at least £68,000 from section 106 fundlng. The contractor Sanrtus Ltd, an envlronmental speciallst In projects like ours, was appointed by Sheffield City Council in May 2021 and started the necessary work to design the final restoration process. Sanctus started practical works at Forge Dam in October 2021. The restoration includes silt removal, the insertion of a discreet wall to direct the brook over the Spillway and addre55 the longstanding problem of silting, and the creation of an attractlve open body of water with a varlety of depths, a reconfigured Island and plantlng on perlmeter bank5 in order to improve the habitat for wildlife. The proSect was orlglnally due to be flnlshed in Marth 2022 but has been delayed due to the winter storms. FOPV will tron5fer a final balance to the Council on completion of the work, and any remaining restrScted funds will be used to invest in further environmentsl improvernent5 in the area. Friends of the Porter Valley Trustees. annual report- contlnued For the year ended 31 Au8USt 2021 She herd Wheel: The smaller hull and the rear courtyard were reopened in June 2021 as part of the reorganised Sheffield Museum5Trust. A happy return to normality and though there were some limitations because of Covid it was altogether a very successful summer. Bln ham Park: Crowdfunding and other innovative fundraising by the Community Group secured major improvement5 for Blngham Park: o splendld picnic bench appeared by the pay to play tennis courts, and plans for rehabilitation of a further court were laid. Other improvements planned are a netball/basketball court, mini skateboard park, children's scooter and cycle track. dcllffe Park.. No duck race In 2021 for the second year runnin8. Some gardenin8 done. Condltlon and Su ort for the envlronment. Blrd and butterfly monltoring was planned in summer 2021with the Sheffield and Rotherham Wildlife Trust. We are very mlndful that the wlldlSfe needs to be SUPPOrted, but sadly incidents of damage to the environment needed action: fly tlpplng contlnued to be a problem. brook pollution was reported In Whiteley Wood5, and dramatically low water levels in the Wlre Mill Dam endangered the fish in Au8USt. Conservatlon Work: Voluntsry work carried on quletly throughout the lockdown, firstly wlth individuals working alone and then in teams of 6 strictly allocated to tasks and observin8 Covid precautions. Sightlines down to the dam were created In the 70 year old Festival of Britain Woodland and the original trees were identlfled and labelled. Footpath repalrs, dry stone wall reconstructlon and garden bed planting started at Forge Oam lower 8reen. The old boathouse area overlooklng the millrace wa5 cleared of a tan8le of self5et Sycamore and brambles and promises to be 3 8ood seatlng area rlght by the dam. Communl events: 2020 Chrlstmas sales were largely done by the FOPV web shop and the 2021 calendar was very much a record of 2019120 Covld lockdown experlen¢es. Ever increasing numbers of people used the valley to walk, cycle, run. To meet the needs of these newcomers we created leaflets about the valley from Endc16ffe right up to the Porter Clough. Walks Talks: There were only 5 walks. An onllne booklng system was Introduced to Ilmit the numbers on the monthly walk5 when they restarted in June 202150 that we complled wlth Covld dlstancln8 recommendatlon. Volunteers: Volunteers Ilncludlng trusteesl are estlmated to have 8lven over 2,8(K) hours In the year towards conversatlon work, events and fundraislng and other work. Iln a year not impacted by lockdown, this would have been c105er to 4,81xI hour51. Future plans Once the contractors have completed thelr work at Forge Dam, habitat Improvements will then be our main focus. Bingham Park will see new family and ball game facilitie5. Future donation5 will 80 to new Porter Vallev restorations: there is much to do. ReseNes pollcv The charity does not currently have a formal reserves policy. General fund5 at 31 August 2021 were £28,988. The committee considers this balance sufficient as the majority of the charity'5 expenditure is for specific projects for which restricted funding is raised.
