The Bowlby C¢ntr¢ Trnstees, Rew•rt Intmduction from the Chir of Trnstets By any definition. it's been a lumultS year. I took over as Chair in Mar¢h 2020. just a few weeks before the governmetti annowKed the first national lockdo1. One of my first action8 alon8side the new Board of Tru5tee5 and the Exeeutive Tearn. was to agr¢¢ to the imm¢diate ¢losur¢ of th¢ C¢ntr¢. But whil¢ the building has remained lar8ely closed since that date, the work of th¢ Centr¢ has very murh continUEd. The Ex¢cutive Tewn took on the task of moving all the s¢ryi¢¢s provide - traknin8 for sdents, CPD for men)bers. and provi$i(pn of psychotherapy w the publi¢ . onliD¢. was Do Sm1 fe44 and they hav¢ done $0 with gr¢ ¢are and skill. It is an imp)rtsnt momeni to fornia]ly pay tribute w what they have achieved. under the mosr difficult ¢1M$n¢¢s. While many charities hav¢ sadly already ¢ollaps¢d and many rnore ar¢ ¢#imat¢d to f%¢ b3nkniptcy this y¢•r. The Bowlby Centre Temains in good health. It is our prioriry as a Board of Tn1¢¢$ that this position ¢ontinu¢s, particularly at a tim¢ when there is a soaring d¢mand for our s¢ryic¢s. and as ch111¢$ are increasingty aciing as a srf¢ty Det ITh sociery. In fact, the sItiOn of The Bowlby Centre Es as stron8 as ever. Trainin8 continued, wÉth a full intake of students thi5 ycar. We continue to provide low cost therapy io those who otherwise couldn't afford it. Our CPD and annual conference have moved online. Our journal continues to grow in readership. and we have another imEx)rtant monograph due for publication later thi5 ye8r- the I Ith in our series. Our ¢liniui f0m$ now reach three times th¢ nwnb¢r they previously did. And w¢ have a new series of online workshops, introdv¢ing th¢ idw of atra¢hmeni th¢ory. Not only or¢ w¢ fvrther disseminating important ideas, w¢'re g¢Tating subsraniial, additioNI reVu¢ forthe Centye. It's this additional artivity that ha5 allowed the Trustee5 to appint and propcrty compcn5atc a Chicf Exccutive. for the first time in the hLSttsry of thc Centre. In time. moving to payment for kcy rolc5 will allow us to be8in to rcalise our ambition5 to increL%e hrther the influence and reach of the Centre. Together. the Tru5tee5 and the Executive. with input from member5. are beginning to develop a Strattgy for incre&wl STO. We whll of course PUTsue those plan5 With care" prudence. stewardship and good governancc being the watchword5. In addition. w¢ have begun doing som¢ hard thinking on the issu¢ of rn¢¢: how make th¢ Bowlby Centr¢ a g¢nuiDely diverse and in¢lusive pla¢¢ t(p train and praui¢e. Th¢ s¢ries of ¢onv¢rsaiions on r¥x, wlji¢h began in 2020. will ¢ontinu¢ into 2021 - th¢r¢ is more to be said ith this area and, imporfanily. moff to be done. I've taken rnore 5pacc than usual in the Chair's comrnents. in order to fleCt on the extraordinary cvents of the ytar- marked by 1055 and personal trdgcdy for 50mc of u5- as well lo pay thbutc to the trcmcndou5 lIC¢11ve cffort to rcmain resilient in that nieXt. That wll be our continucd challenge in 2021. as we continuc to supwt each othcr through perhaps thc most difficult time in our livin8 memory. and certainly in the Centre'5 history. The Bowlby Centre Trnsttts, Rew•rt Annul Report lo122• This fJnan¢ial year has seen two chairs of the Executive: Michaela Chamberlain was in the wsr from September 2019 to February 2020 and I have been in the rolc frorn February 2020 to thc prestnt day. We have also, in this tirne. had three Chairs of ihc Clinical Training Comrnittee as I handed the role over to Debbie Zimmernian and Debbie sub5e4uentty handed it over to Jane Parkinson. As Matt h&8 said in his report atKJv¢, • completsly n¢w board of trustees t(A)k over in March 2020 as w¢ll. It must be evident, from this alone, that the ¢entye has b¢en going through a gre deal of transiiion thwe lasi few morths and J am delight¢d to say thal having spent som¢ time managing thi& the Exe¢utive aJe now in a strong position focus on dev¢lopin8 th¢ Centre in some imporwii ways. The mosi important t&sk of the year has been rP)ndIng as quickly and flexibly as w¢ Could to th¢ ¢v¢T4hanging eircum5tances that Covid throwm up- and l am xutely of the loss¢s thai some of you have suffered as a result of thL5 virus. I know that som¢ of you hav¢ losi family and parmers and that others have Caught the vinjs and been really ill with it. l am also conscious that some of you have bem dealing with other very serious health ¢ondiiions which have been extremely ditTicult and str¢ssfvl against the b&kdTOP o(thi$ pandemic. This year ha5 seen rnany of you rnakin8 changes to your liftstyle and your wYJrkiA8 prxtices - ¥ a long period of r¢tl¢¢thon has necessarily taken place in response to the situation all now fittd outselves in - and it has b¢en impoi1ant for the Executive to adjust to the differing ne¢ds of membNs. Having be¢n an owiwion that ¢ottducied ty¢arty all of its business in person in the p&st. wt are unlikely to return to that as a model in the fvtyr¢. Th¢ brnefiis of ¢ondu¢ting s¢minars, ¢ommit meeting5. conferences and clinical fonjms on-lin¢ and e$sing of you liw¢ outside Lonth)n has been significant - And we would aThticipate developing 8 hybrid model of face to face and remthe wxing fTom here on in. One of the most imw1rftt ¢hanges that we have rn¢ this yCaT. in consUl10n with MCMIr$ from the CTC and tht tea¢hin8 team. has been the re•introduction of the cxpericntiai 8roup which is a reflectivt 8roiip Space for our students on the traiThin8. We are still committed to the weckcnd Attachment groups run by Jane. Joanna and Michael. but they have been SLtspended for the duration of this pandemit and have understcd the imw&rtance of havin8 acces5 to 8roupwork on a more regular basis during ierni lim< which is not methin8 that they have been able to offer. The other si8nificant cults1 shift that th¢ Exe¢utive has ilWigated has been around the C¢ntre's aPproh to thinking about Race. The are several arets that will need to be addressed in relation to this - thinking aly)ut the ¢utti¢ulum ¢ontent, ieces5ibility to the training, deeper and more effective ways th address white privilege io name but a few- and we have siarted the process off by introducing an experiential group nm by our tm¥ race Consultsnt AÈ)th¢a B¢nj8mit) and her coll¢agu¢ Chris Scanlon. Anthea and Chri5 are trained group analysts and the aim of th¢ grvup is to explore the ways in whi¢h ra¢ism is experienced by and perpetuated by members at the C¢ntre. The ini¢nty"on is io address the d¢¢ply personal and painfvl aspects of rdcism before rushin8 into lleY chan8e- so thai we can create a sea change in th¢ cul¢w¢ Nh¢r than a sei of njles that will potentially fail to actuajly address what needs to be addressed. In addition to this there will need to be a thorough pJw¢ss of creating policy changes alon8side the group worK and one of the key are will be in our review of the curriculum in 2021. In February 2021 The Executive and the CTC will be holding the fiN of a series of awaydays to on this ¢uryi¢ulum r¢vi¢w. The final thing io mention in tem$ of have been Y)wking on (in wllaborntion with the trustees) ha5 been the developmeni of a digital librarylthop in which we ¢#n re ledures and talks for our member5 (for reduced fees or for fr¢¢) and for colleagues external lo the Bowlby Ctntre. The IntrUCtion of Graham's webinars on Attachment h&$ been very su¢cesshJl and the plan is to enc¢Jurdge member5 to come forward with their 01 ideas on what they might like to deliver for s. We hope thai it WLII be a good to spread our knowled8e of Attachment to a wider audience and to generate incorne for members and Ihe Centre. Tori Settlt CEO of tbe Bowlby Ctmirt
