AGM 21-22 summary

Dear Parents,

welcome to the Friends of St Monica’s AGM (Annual General Meeting). This meeting is needed as part of the Friends Charitable status but also a requirement set on our Constitution.

It is a great opportunity to reflect on last year’s events and but to also to highlight the challenges we face on this new 22-23 school year.

Current executive committee (Peachy, Eorann, Daniella, Breda, Alex & Nacho) was formed in September 2020 and as we say goodbye to our second year, we look forward to our last year to continue supporting with raising the well needed money for our children’s school.

With school funding cuts, PTAs support has become critical to ensure that our kids have access to adequate resources to support their learning experience.

21-22 School year began under COVID restrictions followed by rules and guidelines uncertainty. Due to the ongoing climate, no large events took place at school grounds during Autumn & Winter terms.

We slowly & happily started planning events for Spring and Summer terms under no restrictions but ensuring that events were safe to attend by all. It was great to organise our first Summer Fete after three years of absence.

Friends Committee continues improving how money is raised and streamed from donation to Friends account until it reaches school to purchase resources.

Virgin Giving platform was replaced with Invest on my Community due Virgin’s platform closure and we are increasing the usage of contactless readers to minimise cash handlings.

For new parents and anyone else who might not be aware, ‘Invest on my Community’ is a not-for-profit fundraising platform with a mission statement aimed to help UK charities raise and collect funds.

Here is a summary of main events and quantities raised (as profit):

Friends started 21-22 fundraising year by volunteering at St Monica’s church by hosting tea, coffee, and cakes after mass. Such an event brought a lot participation in terms of amazing cakes, in addition to providing a service to our church community, it raised a total of £758.

Happy bags school clothes collection, even though the price for KG went down due to pandemic. Collections raised around £1500

School teachers made possible one of the children favourite event, School discos. It is always great to see kids dancing, enjoying, and coming home exhausted ready to go to bed. School discos raised £3800 (95% profit).

Due to restrictions, there was no Christmas Bazaar held in the school. St Monica’s church kindly offered their large hall (Theatre) to host a smaller event where the kids could come and enjoy themselves with some activities whilst parents try their luck at the bottle tombola stall. The event was extremely popular and well attended. Not only we did we celebrated the Bazaar but we also held our traditional Christmas raffle. Christmas celebration period raised close to £4000.

Minor COVID restrictions continued during winter and early spring period. This resulted on no events held in the school. During this time, there were great initiatives such ‘Last One Standing’ for football lovers & ‘Tough Mudder’ for the active people. These events raised around £2500.

Spring came along and all restrictions were finally lifted. The Friends brought back the ‘Golf’ and the beloved ‘Summer Fete’. Golf raised £2500. Summer Fete was also a success. It was great to see St Monica’s school community getting back together once again. What a great day for celebration it was. Event raised £7500 inclusive of raffle and brochure. I would like to take the opportunity to highlight our new Eco-friendly brochure (no paper) proofed popular amongst our local businesses but also reduce the amount of waste it produced.

In addition, there were and are other ongoing initiatives constantly raising money such as Facebook Preloved group, Ice cream stall, year 6 production, World book sale, Star is Born, Dads Pub Olympics, Dr Bike, Uniform Sale and many more.

We believe this year despite uncertainty and restrictions was a success in terms of raising funds. 21-22 saw a fundraising total of £27000.

Where all the money goes? All money raised goes straight to the school to fund learning resources such as IPads, laptop suites, software licensing, swimming lessons, smart boards, books… 20-21 year Friends donated a total of £20665. Most of this year’s funding went towards covering software licensing, school forest maintenance, music lessons, Christmas Pantomime and other school initiatives. Software licensing includes:

Looking into our last year, we believe we face great challenges to keep fundraising money for our school and children.

Challenges are mostly due post Covid effects and the rising cost of living. We noticed that costs of running events have increased considerably, therefore the Friends Committee has had to make changes to best balance raising funds whilst making events always affordable to all.

To all parents, we are open to suggestions and initiatives. If you have a fundraising idea, we are here to help by setting up fundraising pages and use our communication channels and help to make the event a success and raise lots of money for the school.

On this ongoing 22-23, our last year, the current Committee is dedicated to consolidate an structured event calendar to facilitate Committee succession in September 23. All executive committee roles will be available for election.

To conclude this AGM summary, we believe this 21-22 year has been a great year. Children, teachers, parents and the whole school staff and community have stepped up to this great challenge and made a real difference.

We are happy to continue working together with Kate, Tony, school staff, parents, and everyone to make the school a special place for our children.
