Trustee Annual Report 2026: The GEM Appeal Registered Charity Number 1040083
30 May 2026
GEM Appeal Trustees annual Report 01/01/2025 – 31/12/2025
The Royal Manchester Children’s Hospital Genetic Trust (GEM Appeal) is constituted by Deed of Trust and is a registered charity, number 1040083. Its address is 6 Yealand Close, Bamford, Rochdale. OL11 4DL.
The charity trustees at the start and end of the year were as follows:
Mrs Karen Johnson (Chairperson) Mrs Katie Duxbury (Vice Chairperson) Mr Garry Whitworth (Treasurer) Mrs Wendy Mills (Secretary) Mr Peter Johnson Mrs Joy Whitworth Mr David Howles Mrs Lynn Howles Mrs Judith Paraschack Mr Robert Rawsthorne
Our annual AGM took place, as usual in January (2026) and all the officers of the charity were re-elected to the positions they held the previous year.
Due to ill health both Mr and Mrs Howles tendered their resignations which were reluctantly accepted by the remainder of the trustees who thanked them both for their long and outstanding contributions to the charity.
The charity is currently looking to replace them but by constitution it is still well within the requisite number of trustees and confirmation of the resignations will be in the annual report next year.
The year ending 31 December 2025 was discussed at length and the fundraising activities were reviewed. These included the following events: Karen’s 10k sponsored walk The Strawberry Sparkle Ladies Lunch The Annual Quiz night The Welders Ball The Christmas Afternoon Tea
As mentioned in our previous report, Denise Welch, our patron, decided that she was unable to continue to host the Winter Ball and be involved with the charity to the extent she had previously and 2025 was the first year without the ball for 21 years.
The effect this had on the charity was discussed at length and is very noticeable in the revenue and income generated for the year.
We are still looking for potential replacements for Denise but are realising that finding somebody to do what she did is going to be very difficult and time consuming. That said we were invited to be 1 of 4 charities to be beneficiaries of a ball taking place in early March 2026 which proved to be very successful and will be reported on in the TAR for 2026. Whilst the funds that came our way did in no way match what we raised at our own
ball they did replace some of the missing funds and we were invited back to be beneficiaries in March 2027.
We are also pleased to be able to say that our fundraising efforts did enable us to continue the funding of the research scientist and in February 2025 we paid out the sum of £49650 which allows her to continue her research for another 12 months.
The other great news discussed was the stem cell therapy developed and administered at the Willink Unit seemed to have cured a boy from America of Hunter Syndrome. There is still a long long way to go but this is absolutely fantastic news.
We have had a conversation with the Willink and confirmed that they would like us to continue fundraising to pay for another 12 months for the research scientist. This would run from the start of July 2026 to the end of June 2027 at which point, even though the scientist will still be in the employ of the Willink Unit, they will be in a position to charge for her work and findings and thereby fund her own job.
Her work has proved to be really successful and is adding to the works of the Willink Unit and benefitting patients greatly.
With this in mind the charity will keep its aims the same and with a carry over balance at 31/12/2025 of £56383.77 we are confident of being able to fund the scientist for the period requested.
Our chairperson Karen ended the meeting by once again thanking all the unpaid trustees and volunteers for the amount of time and effort donated to the charity and the undoubted effect it has on its ability to continue raising the funds it does.
