The trustees are responsible for the overall governance, strategic direction and oversight of the charity, ensuring that the organisation continues to deliver its charitable objectives and public benefit.
Structure, Governance and Management
Porthtowan Surf Life Saving Club is a registered charity operating under its constitution and within the framework and standards of its governing body, Surf Life Saving Great Britain (SLSGB).
The charity is managed by its Board of Trustees, who oversee the strategic development, governance, financial management and effective delivery of the club’s activities.
Operational delivery is supported by a team of volunteers, including qualified coaches, trainer assessors, surf lifeguards and other club volunteers.
Trustees are appointed in accordance with the charity’s constitution. The club seeks to recruit trustees who can contribute appropriate skills, experience and commitment to support the ongoing development of the charity and its lifesaving objectives.
The trustees meet regularly throughout the year to review the charity’s activities, finances, risks and future priorities.
Objectives and Activities
The principal objectives of Porthtowan Surf Life Saving Club are to promote community water safety, lifesaving skills, physical activity and personal development through surf lifesaving.
The club provides opportunities for members of all ages to develop skills in:

Competitive lifesaving
During the year, the club delivered structured training, coaching and development opportunities, with a strong focus on supporting children and young people and developing the next generation of lifesavers.
Achievements and Performance
During the reporting year, Porthtowan Surf Life Saving Club continued to deliver significant public benefit through its commitment to coastal safety, youth development, volunteer engagement and community resilience.
The club had 160 members , including 100 members under the age of 16 , demonstrating the strength of its junior development programme and its role in providing young people with safe, structured opportunities to develop lifesaving skills, confidence and resilience.
A key achievement during the year was the continued delivery of the club’s lifesaver pathway , providing a structured progression route from junior (Nipper) participation through to qualified surf lifeguard status. During the reporting period, 20 members achieved qualification as surf lifesavers , strengthening the pool of trained volunteers able to support coastal safety and community resilience.
The club maintained a strong volunteer workforce, including:

28 active volunteer surf lifeguards providing regular evening and weekend cover
A consistent training programme was delivered throughout the year, including:

Weekly senior training sessions

Weekly surf boat rowing sessions, including Sunday mornings
-
Weekly IRB (Inshore Rescue Boat) training sessions
These sessions ensured that members developed and maintained the skills required to operate safely and effectively in coastal environments, while also promoting physical fitness, teamwork and leadership.
The club contributed to the coordination of community assets and stakeholders to support the requirements of the Blue Flag award for Porthtowan beach, reinforcing its commitment to beach safety, environmental standards and community collaboration.
The charity also engaged with local schools through the SLSGB Splash School programme , supporting water safety education and raising awareness of safe behaviours in and around the sea.
During the year, the club secured funding through the Making Space for Sand project to begin development of a planning application for a replacement lifesaving premises at Porthtowan beach. The proposed facility will be flood-resilient and modular, supporting the long-term sustainability and growth of the charity’s activities.

Through these partnerships, the charity contributes to wider coastal resilience, environmental protection, community engagement and public safety initiatives.
Through its activities, Porthtowan Surf Life Saving Club provides public benefit by:

The trustees are grateful to the volunteers, members, supporters and partners whose ongoing commitment enables the charity to deliver these benefits.
Financial Review
During the reporting period from 1 October 2024 to 30 September 2025, Porthtowan Surf Life Saving Club maintained sufficient financial resources to deliver its charitable objectives and activities.
The charity’s income was derived from membership subscriptions, grants, fundraising activities and donations. These funds were applied to support training programmes, equipment purchase and maintenance, insurance, and general operational costs.

The charity continues to seek funding opportunities to support both its ongoing activities and its longer-term strategic objectives, including the development of new club premises.
Reserves Policy
The trustees recognise the importance of maintaining reserves where possible; however, during this reporting period the charity did not hold any material free reserves.
Available funds are generally applied directly to the delivery of the charity’s objectives. The trustees will continue to review the financial position of the charity and aim to build an appropriate level of reserves in future to support financial resilience and long-term planning.
Debts and Liabilities
The charity had no outstanding debts or liabilities at the end of the reporting period.
Funds Held as Custodian Trustee
The charity does not hold any funds as custodian trustee for any other organisation or individuals.
