Section D Achievements and performance
Summary of the main achievements of the charity during the year
After the huge uncertainty for the preschool in the previous financial year, as the coronavirus spread and the preschool was closed for part of the year completely, the financial year of 2020-2021 has unfortunately proved equally uncertain and challenging - arguably the most challenging of the pre-school’s history. The charity made an unprecedented loss of £8k during the year which was primarily due to a significant reduction in the number of children attending the pre-school post-lockdown, and increased wage bill associated with paying isolating staff and the continuing increasing divergence between income and costs.
During this financial year we have achieved:
-
7 children have successfully moved up to primary school and settled in well.
-
New children were welcomed into the preschool although numbers of children after the first lockdown continued to remain down on pre-COVID numbers.
-
Fundraising was challenging but working around COVID restrictions we managed to hold several fundraising events during the summer term including a stall at the village fete, the pre-school sports day and a sponsored golden mile.
-
We are grateful for the donations received during the year which have helped towards the purchase of a new mud kitchen and revamping of the outside area. We would like to thank again both Sway Village Hall and Sway Carnival Committee for their kind donations and support.
We have made it through what has been the most financially challenging year of the pre-school and we only remain open now as a result of the support from parents and community and in particular the incredible loyalty and commitment of our wonderful staff.

Brief statement of the charity’s policy on reserves
Little Flyers has potential financial commitments for which we need to put aside some of our income as a reserve against future uncertainties. The Current account holds a reserve of ~£3k to cover fluctuations in receipts or payments and as a risk contingency.
The Deposit account holds a reserve of ~£10k as a contingency fund to pay staffing costs in the event of a closure.
