MAIDSTONE WEST DISTRicf SCOUT COUNCIL Registered charity number 1022011 Accounts for the year ended 31 March 2021

District Commissioner's Report 2021 It's good to see you all here tonight. the last year has been very different. or is it the new normal? Scouting in Maidstone West has ￿rtainlY been athve. whether it has been virtually or face to face. Last autumn we briefly started face to face scouting again and groups ernbra￿d this with lots of outside activities. Fires were lil. sausages were sizzled! It was great to see all sections of scouting from Beavers all the way up to Network and Leaders enjoying their scouting again at last. Then kjckdown came back and in a heartbeat you were all back online continuing to provide quality scouting throughout the district. There were virtual camps, Hikes, quizzes. cooking nights, investrtures and lots of young people progressing through the badge award systern. Then at last in April this year face to face scouting resumed and we were back to seeing everyone oncA8 more. Yes it has been a chalbenging year. but as always the leaders in Maidstone West have grabbed the bull by the horns and continued to provide quality scouting to all the young people. Yes, leaders and young people have left scouts but it makes me smile everytime I visit a section and see the smile on the faces of the young people and their leaders. (well most of them)! We have adults coming through that VK)uld like to become leaders, have even had some new leaders that started online and hadn't even met the young people and fellow leaders in person. Sections and groups are once more beginning to grow with long waiting lists so we have the challenge of finding more new leaders to help run our sections and groups. Gang Show rehearsals have started with a brand new production team and 70Vo new people involved. Make a note in your diaries to see the show at the Hazlitt between 5th - 9th April 2022. Hamlet Wood y￿1Comed back scouts in March for outdoor meetings and every night young people were enjoying themselves. Lots of work has been carried out at Hamlet Wood with the Vanstone HQ having 8 new kitchen and heating system. The woodland has been coppiced, a project to build a roundhouse is under way and lots more is planned, the ne￿ project bw'ng the tcxlet block. Hamlet Wood have a Nvorking paty on the 3rd Saturday of each month, it's a great opportunity for adults to have some scouting time themselves so please do come and join in, and there is always cakel A VEry big thank you goes to Amanda, Paul and all the Hamlet Wood team, you all do so much so that people can have a great experience he￿ at Hamlet WCKMJ, and the groups being able to use Hamlet Wood once scouting was able to ￿Urne through the pandemic has been a huge benefit to many, so on behalf of all the groups, Thank you.

Looking fornvard, during October we have Beaver human fcK)tball, Scout district camp, Network water activity night and camp. In November the Explorers are hosting a firework evening with Maidstone East. Beyond that we have Winter Survival, Gang Show, selection for the 2023 world jamboree and picking up vthere we left off 8C (Before Covid) WFth district run fun days. young leader events and more. The Scout Association recently announced the arrival of Squirrels! A brand new section for 4-5 year olds. We already have interest from one group in setting up a squirrel dray so any groups that a￿ Inte￿sted please speak to me about it. People often ask me, why do you give up your time for scouts? I normally say that it is to give young people a great scouting experien￿. Sometimes it all gets a bit bogged down with emails. risk assessments and other adult stuff, but the other Sunday, I was sitting at Little Fant Fann, with my dog, drinking coffee and eating k)vely bacon and cheese bap. when a young boy came up to me and said, 'H Gingel It was g￿8t to see you at cubs the other night, we had a great time.. I looked at him and said, 'I'm glad you enjoyed rt.. I dKln't know who he was, but it v￿S great to know he enjoyed his scouting experience, tt makes all that boring paperwork a bit more worthwhile. His Dad came over. sh￿k my hand, and said, 'my son recognised you, and wanted to come and say hello. thank you for all that you do he loves cubs!. So Thank you all for your hard work keeping scouting in Maidstone alive despite the difficult times. Thank you lo my District Team, the District Executive Committee. leaders, parents, carers, friends and the young people themselves. It's all about the kidsl Thanks & enjoy your S￿lUtIng.
