CB MT Tho we are and whatwe do The Corinne Burton Memorial Trust ICBMD is the only charrty in the UK that supports the practice of Art Psychotherapy for cancer care. We have played a fundamental role in the d￿elOpment Df this field through several inrtialives", by conlnbuting lo the funding of art Iherapisl positions al hosprtals (currently, Sl Bartholomwrf's Hospital In London, referred lo hereafter as -Barts), the publication of materials and books. and the funding of a scholarship at Goldsmrths. Sadly, many cancer patients cannot be guaranteed any kind of 'longer term,. Art therapy gries an immediate psychotherapeutic benefrt, playing a ptrrtrful role In gNing patients both insight and an additional wll to fight. It is an especially important tool for patients resislanl lo traditional psychological therapy (such as young men, often turn down other forms of support). Cancer is a devastating illness. tt can be physically debililaling. meaning patients lose the abilrty lo do the things they could bgfDre. This can lead to depression. anxiety, and deep feelings of loneliness. therapy enables patients to re-engage crealrrfely, helping them find ways of connecting ￿th their purpose and the people around them. Evaluatin our work The art therapists at Barts evaluate the impact and oulcomes of their sessions using the same measures as applied by NHS Cancer Alliance UK. A patient's anxiety and depression levels are measured at the start and then again al the end of a course of art therapy. The impact of therapy is assessed using the 7 and PHQ 8 psychometric scales, which measure patient anxiety and depression. In 2)22 the average scores of patients before art therapy were outside the normal range, meaning thesg patients would be considered lo have anxiety or depression disorders. After the art therapy programme (usually 4-6 sessions) their &￿Tage scores were reduced significantly, Into the normal range, a huge therapeutic benefit for patients. Results from ihe Cancel Psychological Semces (CPS) team in 2022 are shown In the graph below. 113 112 Outcome Measures Average Count 14 12 12
