Tho we are and whatwe do
The Corinne Burton Memorial Trust ICBMD is the only charrty in the UK that supports the practice of Art
Psychotherapy for cancer care. We have played a fundamental role in the d￿elOpment Df this field through
several inrtialives", by conlnbuting lo the funding of art Iherapisl positions al hosprtals (currently, Sl
Bartholomwrf's Hospital In London, referred lo hereafter as -Barts), the publication of materials and books.
and the funding of a scholarship at Goldsmrths. Unr*ersrty of London. for new art Iherapisls specialising in
cancer care. CBMT also prLryides funds lo the scholarship recipients for another two years after graduating,
towards them working al hosprtals or hospices. as qualthed art Iherapisls. delNering seNices lo cancel

Receiving a diagnosis of cancer is a deeply distressing evenl. ￿lIe tradition81 psychotherapy is a useful
tool, il 18 usually used on a longer-term basis. Sadly, many cancer patients cannot be guaranteed any kind
of 'longer term,. Art therapy gries an immediate psychotherapeutic benefrt, playing a ptrrtrful role In gNing
patients both insight and an additional wll to fight. It is an especially important tool for patients resislanl lo
traditional psychological therapy (such as young men, often turn down other forms of support). Cancer
is a devastating illness. tt can be physically debililaling. meaning patients lose the abilrty lo do the things
they could bgfDre. This can lead to depression. anxiety, and deep feelings of loneliness. therapy enables
patients to re-engage crealrrfely, helping them find ways of connecting ￿th their purpose and the
people around them.

Art therapy is recoqnised as expandinq the options for communicalino and qmno back patients Iheii

oiheDNise may not be suitable for other lalking-based therapies. Each session takes them out of their clinical
setting and helps them to reconnect wrth Ihemsekes. and process that they are experiencing.
Without CBMT. there would not be a legacy of Therapy al Barts hosprtal. ¥thich sits wrthin the largest
NHS trust in the UK and covers some of London's most economically deprNed areas. Our ffinancial
support has enabled specialist help for cancer patients. some of *hom might otherwise not h

Our Im
Since our founding. CBMT has p￿￿ded scholarships lo more than 3J Art Psychotherapy sl*Jdenls through
Goldsmiths. They gone on lo help thousands of cancer sufferers across the country. As a result of
our financial contribution lo the art Iherapisl position al Barts or al other hospitals and hospices, there have
been more than 6.500 art therapy sessions delr4ered al Barts alone in the past fifteen years. Many patients
have written directly lo the Trust *Tth their appreciation.

Thanks lo the generous grants and donations we have receNed (including in the last year donations from
the Sobell Foundation, D'oyly Carte Charrtable Trust, March-Henderson Trust, St James. Place
Foundation. and Weinslock Ch3rrtable Trust). we were able lo continue our usual work despite the impact
of C(JvlD-19 . Luckily, the programmes were fundamentally unchanged desprte the ongoing impact of the
pandemic on referral systems and working methods.

In 2022 the CBMT art Iherapisls saw 74% more patients than in 3L1 delivering mr two hundred and
eighty art therapy sessions lo cancer patients, a majority of which were conducted as video or phone
outpatient sessions, wrth around a quarter deIr￿red face lo face on Barts ¥*ards
In addition to their work wrth patients, the CBMT art therapists also continued their WOTk helping to
support hosprtal staff, continue lo face intense stress and pressure from the pandemic Nine out of
len staff members report that their art therapy sessions had a posilNe effect on their personal ￿Ell-being
and their approach lo work. ￿th ten oul of ten reporting that the sessions successfully helped them relax
and avoid bumoul.
CBMT and COVID-19
Our work became particularly important through the COMtk19 pandemic when many in-patients were not
able to have ouls1de ￿iSrtOrS for months at a lime. and overstretched doctors and nurses were at high risk
of burnout and some of our Iherapisls, time al Barts was seconded lo staff support. The CBMT Art
Therapists established an online art therapy blog and online art therapy group ¥thich were used by 340
staff members P5 allended groups and 315 engaged art therapy via the blog). As a regu￿ of this work
the psychological seThices team al Barts (including art therapy and psychology) was pul fotward for a
parliamentary award.
Hospital staff ale frequently exposed to work-relaled stress putting them al risk of bumout and affecting
patient safely. In another pilot Study at Barts, CBW art therapists deliyered sessions lo eighteen trainee
doctors. 14 of ￿0M were measured lusing a psychological assessment) as being close lo burnout.
Following the cours?. Ihgre were slatisticalty signrficanl improvements in emotional exhaustion and
personal achievement.

Evaluatin
our work
The art therapists at Barts evaluate the impact and oulcomes of their sessions using the same measures
as applied by NHS Cancer Alliance UK. A patient's anxiety and depression levels are measured at the start
and then again al the end of a course of art therapy.
The impact of therapy is assessed using the 7 and PHQ 8 psychometric scales, which measure patient
anxiety and depression. In 2)22 the average scores of patients before art therapy were outside the normal
range, meaning thesg patients would be considered lo have anxiety or depression disorders. After the art
therapy programme (usually 4-6 sessions) their &￿Tage scores were reduced significantly, Into the normal
range, a huge therapeutic benefit for patients. Results from ihe Cancel Psychological Semces (CPS) team
in 2022 are shown In the graph below.

Our Plans
The Trust feels very proud of the students and alumni of the Goldsmrths art Iherapy course and the
practitioners at Barts and other hosprtals and hospices. vtho h￿e been the recipients of itsfunding for over
3) years. of the maNellous work they ha¥e done. and care they gNen.
As a result of the positive Impact of our work al the Bart's Trust, there has been a gr{y￿rth In demand for
our seThicgs. To mgel this demand we are planning on Increasing the pro￿s1On of Art Therapy across
Bart's Trust hospitals by funding additional art Iherapisls. helping lo reach more underseNed patients and
to alIe￿ate suffering from those in need.
