The Young Actors Company developed dementla I￿end￿ perforrnances volunteered to attend Merton Ways to bulld relats'onships with some the older parb'cipants. The Young Actors Company came tr4ether to produ￿ insplring, origlnal perfonrances, led by an Indefatlgable creats.ve team, for the benefit of ¢Jifferent communities in the Borough of Merton. Kate McGregor chose not to retum to her postion as co-ordinator following her matemity kave and Gra￿ Alexander-scott Stayed on In the rde for April to July of 2022. This period saw the cuknlna￿on of our Stones of Survival project. In collaborat¢on with Green Arts Centre we concluded the delivery of 25 x I hour sUmulL15 workshop5 to 10 schools In Merton reathing 625 young people. These workshops were based around the word suNval and what it means to the young people. The schwls were then free lo £￿ate any athork- wsual or perforrning in response to thi5 Stimulus to be showcased at the Arts Sharing in July. After hugety successful productions in the Studio at New Wimbledon Theatre (Strawberry Yoghurt and A Serie5 of Publlc Apologies) our Young Actor5 Company groups embarked on devising small performances inspired by real life stories of 5urvlval to be perfomed at the same Art5 Sharlng. Att Two used the Jack Petchey Award money to fund fants5tc physical theatre workshop Irorn a Frantic Assembly practitioner who helped them tell their thosen gjrvival stories In a dynamlc fashion. Their p'eces We￿ filled with ensemble energyi physicality and plenty of lifts to tell the s with little in the way of props and seL As a conts'nuation of our relationshlp wlth Green Arts Centre, Dur ￿ youth theatres Came together on ts¥o occaslons 5harlng the rehearsal space, allowlng the younger partlclpants at GAC to leam frorn more eXperien￿d YAC members and for YAC members to praLtice their facllilaling and leaderthip skills. GAC youth theatre a150 devised their own Story ol Survival for our Arts Sharing. wcFr also prDvlded ￿ 90 minute professional development sessions for the GAC Youth Theatre leader, lead by our lead artist and coordinat￿. We also planned and financlally contrlbuted to a one-week drama project attend8J by 22 young people aged 7-12 at Green Arts Centre which enabled Ihem to reach more of the community and has lead to fijrther OFVOrtunitles for a dance group and other holiday tirne projett week5. Overall the Arts Sharlng on 10th July 2022 was a great success. The exhibitlon was h05ted by Canons House & Grounds and the Ilve perfomiance and further artwork was exhlbited at Green Arts Centre. 44 young people performed and 96 audience members attended. It featL5red 179 painb'ThJs, 3 film5, 4 iheatre pietss and collections of poetry created by local school puplLs, our young attors and GAC Youth Theatre members. Monday Ilth July saw us staglng an exhlbitlon for 5chods at Canc￿5 House & Grounds which was attended by 136 young peop￿ frorn flve loc31 schools who cculdn't make to the sharlng on Sunday 10th. By the end of Summer temi, Young Actor5 had worted wlth 46 young peopk, 22% of whlch were on a free place through our open door Scheme. 22% were from the globa5 majority and 24Dh had b learnlng differen￿. We ran 108 hour5 of cL45ses and 48.5 hour5 of extra rehearsals and performed to 338 audience members, The stsrt of the academic year in September saw lots of new attlvity and fresh challenges as we went back up to 3 groups, Att One, Two and Three. The cost of living crisis hitting in the Autumn made the membership fees hard f¢y ￿ffle to meet and we saw a rise In the demand for free pla￿S throughout the yeaf. CNerall we worked with 61 young peop cross the 3 group5 during the 22123 academk year. We took on 2 new group dirertors and 3 new assistant directors and we launched a Mentoring progrnmme for Young Attors Alumni. The aims of the menlorfng programme was Nio-fold: not only did it offer extra 5UPPOrt lo our youn people Increasing supervision to 3 adults for every 20 young people, but it also gave the mentors themselves an opportunlty to (ievelop thelr 5ki115 as facilitators, participate in 5afe9uardlng training, chaperone licensing and be 155Ua wlth a DBS. One mentor Is completlng a music degree, one is hoping to pursue a career In cosiume design and one mentor has deckled to become a drama therapisi. For our therne this year we d)ose to revlsit our intergenerational work launching the Re:Generations projett. Wth fun(Ilng from The Taylor Famlly Foundation, ACE and Wimbledon Foundation Community Fund we were able to establish two creative arts groups (Merton Plays) for elder5 efcher living with demenLia or experiencing particular isolation within their corllmunity One in as%xiation wth Alzheimers Society and based at Merton Dementia Hub and the other In a5SOClation with Common5ide Comrnunity Development Trust at New Horizon Community Centre in Pollards Hill. These gTOUP5 met weekly and gave the older partiopants the chance to tell storles, create poems, respond to art and music. Lead by an experienced practitioner we had 33 paFticipants across the year. Thanks to Wirnbledon Foundation Community Fund we were able to take on an assistant director for the groups in lanuary offerbng the older participaT)ts even more 5UPPCrt and encouragernent.

Through a series of masterclasses in term I, they leamt what dementia friendly theatre looks and feels like and they honed their thlls in voice work, projettion, sound effects and physical theatre in order to rnake their perfomiantrs as dear as possible. Art Three also took part in Morden Hall Park'5 Fun Palace, role tAaying as eccentrlc scientists collecting MeMo￿eS frorn members of the puLlic. A wonderful (yportunity for them to participate in 50rne site specific, immersive theatre. From January 2023 our young people volunteered to attend the Merton Plays gTOUPS individually or in palrs, ts￿ng ￿me out frorn xhcK)l and working to build a rdats"on5hip wf(h the older partscipants and get to know them. 6 VQLJng wople attended regularly to these sesslons as It was hard to obtain permission for them to mi55 schorA. In March 2023 Act Two performed The Woman from the Sea, their take on The Ltttle Mermald and how everyone remembers things a little differently, Art Three perforrned The Llght from Wlthln. a story about a boy that Snherlts his grandmother's camera and along with it her mernorie5 and experiences.
