Durin8 the 2023-2024 financial year, the British Sleep Society (BSS) has continued its mission to provide leadership in the field of sleep within the UK focusing on educ*ion. research and communlcation, in order to achieve tts mlsslon of "healthy sleep for all" Overall, the BSS Is In a healthy financlal positlon. Although outgoln8s are much greater than in the previous fi nancial year, and income much le￿, this IS the result of a substsntial successful grant award last year and its expendtture thls year, a5 Outlined below. During 2022-23 the Bsswas awarded a contractfrom Health Education England for the prowsion ofsleep education to dlfferent parts of the NHS workforce. Ch4er the past financial year, this funding has been used in part to set up and dellver the tralnlng In the form of weblnars and to fund a full tlme Transfomiation Fellow to lead on the trainlng and outreach activlties of the BSS. The weblnars commenced In Ncwember 2023 wlth A Prlmer in Sleep Medicine, and a￿ ongolng. Thus far, 11 webinars have been delivered and there are plans In place to continue this as an annual programme, In addltlon, In-person poly8raphy and poly50mno8raphy courses (the latter being delivered at both Introductory and advanced levels) have been dellvered as part of this misslon. The workshops have been very well recelved, with attendan￿ exceeding 250 for one of them, far In excess of expertations. Employment of theTransformatlon Fellow, the flr5t person ever dlrectly employed by the Society, commenced In August 2023 and is ongolng. Due to a healthy financlal status, the posltlon will continue to be funded for a second year, to July 2025. The su5tsinability of that position thereafter wlll be re8ularly revlewed. To allow the BSS to employ this Fellow, external support wlth human re50uros Including payroll and contractual requlrements has been enlisted. Day to day finanaal, events, and admlnlstratNe support contlnues to be provided externally, by Executive B'uslness Support, and thls partnership works well, allowlng Trustees and Executive Comrnlttee members to serve the BSS without char8e. Officers (also the trustees) of the BSS were refreshed in October 2023, wlth some continuity of expertise within the leadershlp team as per the Soclety's constitutlon. The previous Secretsry and Treasurer were elected as Co-Presidents, wlth a new Secretary and Treasurer being appointed. The Secretary commenced a period of maternlty leave in November, vAth thelr dutles being shared across the other officers and Transformation Fellow. The Executive Committee continues to function as the maln deasion-making body of the Society and is ably asslsted In this regard by Educatlon, Research and Communlcation subcommittees. In addition, the sub-groups of the British Paediatric Sleep Society, and the British Society of Dental Sleep Mediclne. function to represent their respectlve professlonal Interests, whllst beln8 represented on the BSS Executive Committee. The Executive Committee membership and the constitution governing the constttuency of the EC can been seen on the soclety website at https:l/www.sleepsociety.org.uk/. No remuneration or other benefits have been paid or are payable to any trustee. FINANCIAL REVIEW Principal fundlng sour￿5 The Charity is principally funded by the attendance at the Annual Conferen￿ and meettn8 Reserves policy The Trustees monitor the level of reserves to ensure it is sufficient to cover the overheads for a minimum period of 3 months. Thls will likely involve the carry-over of approximately £40,000. whlch can be used in part to integrate and update the BSDSM and BSS websites, and for designated BSDSM activities such as ongoing annual members day events. Funds may also be used to support ongoing mapping of sleep professionals and relevant services across the UK. This workwill commence in the next year. Preparations are ongoin8 for the 8th Intematlonal Paediatric Sleep Association Conferen￿ in Glasgow {April 20241 wlth support from the Brltlsh Paediatric Sleep Society, a sub-group of the BSS. The BSS is preparin8 a position statement on Dayllght Saving Time {British Summer Timel and the associated clock changes, which we hope will be published, along wlth wider public and media interes( In the next financial year. In collaboratSon wlth partners at the Edinbur8h International Convention Centre, the BSS Executive Committee convened a conferen￿ Organising Committee to initiate a bid to host the European Sleep Research Society congress in 2028, which was subsequently successful and will attract international interest In the BSS, provide a focal point for sleep research and activity within the UK, and should yield signlflcant Income for the Society. The BSS has sought to reform towards unincorporated charitable assoclation status, and that proce55 is ongoin& wlth support from external legal teams. Taken together, the past year has been highly successful, and we anticipate further strong and successful activities next year.
