SOUTH WEsf LONDON CHORAL soaETY ANNUAL REPORT For the yearto 31 August 2023 Objects The Objects of the Society are to advance, improve, develop and maintain public education in, and appreciation of, and the art of choral music in all its aspects by any means the trustees see fit, including through the pre5entstion of public events. Governance and Administrntion The Society has operated since 1886 under the terms of the Constitution. The Society is a charty registered with the Charities Commission. charity number 11Th413. The principal address of the Society is 24 Frewin Road London SW18 3LP. The Society 15 administered by a committee as defined in its Constituiion. All the Committee roles are filled by members of the Society and all paid up members are eligible for any of the roles. All committee members offer them5elve5 for re-election at the Annual General Meeting each year. The Committee members are trustee of the Charity. No trustee is paid for his or her role. Public Benefft In planning our pro8ramme the Commwitee is mindful of the Society'5 objects. Our aim is to perform a varied repertoi￿ and to provide easy access at a reasonable price to our events and to membership ofthe Society. During the year the Society gave three concerts: Mozart Requiem, Dvorak Mass in D major and Vivaldi Gloria . All three concerts were held at our regular venue of St Annes's Church in Wandsworth SWI8. The Society values being open to all singers regardless of gender, ethnicity or religion. Reduced subscription rates are offered for5tudents and those who are unemployed. The Society doe5 not formally auditron although our website explains that some experience is desirable. Potential new members are invited to join a few trial rehearsals. Reser¥es Policy The trustees consider it prudent that the Society should maintain reserves sufficient to cover the cost of at least one concert and p￿ferablY a year's expenditure. As at 31 August 2023 we held reserves above this amount, as we received a legary from a deceased member of £5,￿￿) durin8 the year which will be spent over the next couple of years. There are no restrictions on how the Society can spend this money. Financial Review Income for the year was £32.864 of which £5,IM) was in donation5. Which will be spent over the next few years. Subscriptions increased to 16.28012022-1£9.4851 as membership grew and ticket sales were £5,96212022.'11,8301. Expenditure wa5 £24.185 resultin8 in a surplus of £8.679. Financial Controls The financial controls operated by the Society include the following= An annual budget is prepared which is approved by the Commtttee Performance against budEet is reviewed by the Committee termly Subscriptions a￿ recorded against a register of members and the majority of advance tickets are sold via an extemal ticketÈng agenry. South West IA)ndon Choral Society Notes on the financial statements for 2022/23 The financial statements for the year to 31 AUg￿$t 2023 show a surplus of £8,679 compared to a defecit of £1.853 for the preNious year. The main differences between the two years are: i. Subscriptions were increased for 2022123 from £65 to £85 terni 2. In 2022123 there was an average of 68 members per tertn compared to 48 in the pre￿iouS year 3. Refreshments at rehearsals were £1,219 in the year, whereas there were no rehearsal refreshments in 2021122. 4. During the year the Choir received a ￿ of £5,000 from the estate of Judith Crolnpton, a long-standing member of the choir. We are applying this gift to the Messiah concert in March where the audienee will have free entry and will be invited to donate to Alzheilner's R&seArch UK a clwity whieh Judith supported and volunteered with. The budget for 2022123 set to achieve a breakeven ￿SItiOn whilst holding two orchestral eoncerts with soloists in the vear. To achieve this the subscrtptions were increased. We estimated that there would be 65 tnernbers per tertn and that concert audiences would of 90 at each concerL Both these estitnates were excceded.
